ATLANTA (August 2, 2011) – Bounce TV (http://bouncetv.com), the first-ever over-the-air broadcast television network for African-Americans launching September 26, will be seen on Gannett Broadcasting’s WATL-TV in Atlanta, the second largest African-American television market in the country, it was announced today by Bounce TV Executive Vice President of Distribution Jeffrey Wolf. The agreement is Bounce TV’s first with Gannett. Bounce TV now has affiliation agreements with Gannett, Belo Corp., Nexstar Communications, LIN TV Corp. and Raycom Media. The Atlanta-based network expects to be available in at least 50% of the country by its launch.
“The addition of Atlanta is significant and shows that important station groups continue to see the enormous value in carrying Bounce TV,” commented Wolf. “We are thrilled to be affiliated with Gannett and The Networks of 11Alive in our hometown.”
“We are thrilled to add Bounce TV to the growing list of media properties of The Networks of 11Alive. Given that Atlanta is the birthplace of civil rights, we’re confident that a network for African-Americans will be very well received within this market,” commented John Deushane, president and general manager of Gannett’s WXIA-TV/WATL-TV.
Bounce TV will target African-Americans primarily between the ages of 25-54 with a programming mix of theatrical motion pictures, live sporting events, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series, original programming and more. In addition to Atlanta, the network will be seen in Houston, TX; Cleveland/Akron, OH; Charlotte, NC; Cincinnati, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Hartford/New Haven, CT; Norfolk, VA; Dayton, OH; West Palm Beach, FL; Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN; Louisville, KY and Richmond, VA, among other markets. Bounce TV will air 24 hours a day, seven days a week as a digital terrestrial network designed for carriage on the digital signals of local television stations.

….theatrical motion pictures, live sporting events, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series, original programming and more.”
Not sure why black Americans need another whole network all for themselves; after all, they’ve got BET and VH-1. Of interest is that the “original programming” part of the press release is the last thing mentioned before finishing with “and more”. My guess is that BounceTV will become a clearing-house for BET and VH-1′s sloppy seconds.
The ambition is noble, but it is doomed to failure. After all, was this not the same agenda BET had when it debuted? And we all saw what became of BET. Within two years it will become clear that the network can’t earn a profit showing documentaries about MLK and “inspirational faith-based programs” (read: cheap and/or free live broadcasts of Eddie Long’s sermons) and BounceTV will be in the gutter showing repeats of HOMEBOYZ IN OUTER SPACE and booty-shaking/ gangsta videos that even BET was too embarrassed to put on their network.
Gravity’s…,
What? First, VH1 is not a ‘black’ channel. Second, BET was more than happy to show booty-shaking videos. It was only after much protest and the decline of gangsta rap that it stopped showing them.
That said, BET was profitable and sold for billions of dollars to Viacom. As it stands, BET now has done very well with its new scripted series. The premiere of the scripted dramedy/soap “The Game” received 7.7 million viewers. Those are huge numbers for cable
As for Bounce, it will be a broadcast network, giving it more penetration in the market. With increasing numbers of people dropping cable, a niche broadcast network aimed at African-Americans is no different than the 3 broadcast networks aimed at Latinos (Telemundo, Univsion, etc.).
Success will depend on great marketing and great content. Hopefully, Bounce will be able to invest in new scripted programming. Tyler Perry’s TBS programs have earned great ratings and have been very profitable.
Gravity’s Silhouette,
You sound grotesquely ignorant. Don’t know why “black Americans” need another network? Here’s an assignment: go count how many Black shows are on the five commercial networks and see if you can answer your own stupid question. Secondly, VH-1 is a black network? Tell it to Audrina Patridge, Dr. Drew, Bret Michaels and all the Mob wives.
I love how white people have literally every commercial network and hundreds of cable networks, but if black people have anything, there’s always someone to complain about it. No, America’s not racist anymore, oh no, of course not…
Well I dont mind another African American channel. I mean I have enough channels showing me drunk petty white women, white trash motorcycle gangs, fat white cracker dudes fishing, tatooed up up crackers, real life white cocaine addicted stars playing themselves on TV — who then by the way wind up having massive real life fights with their jewish masters that plays out on TV, online, and just about every other media. I actually watch all this and just laugh my ass off at those people. BET is the only channel that lets me laugh at black folk. Why not another one.
Could “And More” be code for “Infomercials”???
Oh, wow, great. Now african-americans can get exploited and shamed on broadcast now
Honestly, BET is pretty disgusting. Actually, scratch that, al black-targeted networks are disgusting. Not because they are for african-americans, but because they play on stereotypes and dumb down many minorities that view them.
I bet MLK is rolling in his grave at the sad state african-american culture is in now. It’s sad when black people know more about Weezy, Gucci Mane, or Wakka Flocka than they know about their own history.
The main problem with Bounce will be African Americans as a group do not have a lot of disposable income. A group of 100 African Americans will have, on average, less income than a group of 100 Whites or 100 Asians or even 100 Latinos.
So you need more viewers to equal the same ad rates. This won’t happen. Bounce will either fail or it will change direction and resort to more “mainstream” shows or infomercials.
I watched a pretty fair old “fishburn” movie earlier today on bounce, tv our way, I just assumed that “our way” meant old Mississippi white guys…
“ThisTV” was better imnsho but hell, as long as we’re talking free television, I’ll give it a shot, and just as all networks show crap as often as not, I’ll keep a fresh battery in the remote.
I wonder if “TV for Americans” would ever catch on…
