EXCLUSIVE: Bradley Cooper is back in talks to star in The Silver Linings Playbook, as it looks like Mark Wahlberg will be leaving the film over what some were saying is a scheduling conflict. And Cooper’s Limitless costar Robert De Niro is also now in the conversation to join the cast. This is The Weinstein Company adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel that David O Russell will direct this fall. Cooper had reportedly been attached to the film last year, but more recently it looked like the star would be Russell’s The Fighter cohort Wahlberg. I’m told that talks are getting underway for Cooper to star with Jennifer Lawrence, who’ll play the female lead role.
Wahlberg will exit the movie because the production start was pushed and it now bumps up against another obligation. I’m still digging, but I think the other Wahlberg movie is Broken City, the noir drama that Wahlberg is poised to star in for director Allen Hughes. In that film, Wahlberg is in talks to play a cop-turned-private eye who gets caught up in a corruption scandal involving the city mayor. Russell Crowe has been offered the role of the mayor, so it sounds like that project is crystallizing with funding from Emmett/Furla Films. The scheduling complexity arose when Lawrence won the female lead over a crop of young actresses. Because she’s shooting The Hunger Games, she needed the picture to start later than expected, and that created the conflict for Wahlberg.
The Silver Linings Playbook revolves around a former high school teacher who was institutionalized for depression and then released into the care of his mother. He tries to win back his ex-wife but becomes involved with an eccentric neighbor with problems of her own. That is the part that Lawrence will play, a job she won amidst competition from a group of top young actresses who became interested after Anne Hathaway (who was originally attached with Cooper) fell out because of her schedule on the Christopher Nolan-directed Batpic The Dark Knight Rises.
Cooper’s coming off The Hangover Part II, and he’s currently shooting The Place Beyond The Pines, the Derek Cianfrance-directed drama that also stars Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. Cooper’s repped by CAA, as is De Niro.

They sure don’t want to cast Rachel McAdams in anything huh. She would be fabulous in this. Jennifer seems too young.
Interesting that David O Russell is working for the Weinsteins again. There is a whole passage in Peter Biskind’s book about Miramax in which Russell talks about how he hated working for Harvey (on ‘Flirting with Disaster’), how repugnant he found a meeting with him (in the Hamptons, if I recall), and goes into great detail about how physically unappealing he finds Harvey. But I guess all is fair in Hollywood!
Why would David O Russell change the filming scuedule to keep Jennifer Lawrence instead of Mark Wahlberg? (If David O Russell doesn’t change the schedule, he can keep Mark Wahlberg.)
Does Jennifer Lawrence’s role require nudity? If so, I can see why David O Russell chooses to keep Jennifer Lawrence rather than Mark Wahlberg; David O Russell would have very difficult time to find an actress to play the role, since very few Hollywood actresses would do nudity.
LOL You again? Please keep it up. You crack me up.
I am sorry for making you feel you annoying. I will never make comment on this issue again.
May you please name the young actresses that have not done any nudity (because the list is short)?
Just because you haven’t seen the film, doesn’t mean the actress didn’t pose nude.
The olde “had to leave due to another obligation”.
Believe the layman’s term for that is bailed due to loss of interest in the project and/or elements attached.
Wahlberg is a smart cat.
This is so not true my friend! IF Mark were smart he would stick by David Russell and figure out the dates. Book is insanely good.
Is it me or did Limitless suck Testies?
No matter who plays the roles it doesn’t seem like an interesting movie.
Mike, thank you for finally getting the facts straight- Anne Hathaway was planning to do this film, but had to turn it down because of TDKR ( and also Bradley Cooper was originally attached ) . But, I am surprised about the Bobby De Niro casting.
Nice try, Anne Hathaway fan. Russell REFUSED to work with Anne and insisted on finding another actress. She didn’t turn it down at all.
all these films sound boring. where’s the hook to get audiences in? it’s certainly not the actresses. jennifer lawrence?
Maybe Hollywood is starting to figure out that “the hook” for getting people into a theater to see a drama piece is to actually have a good script with talented actors/actresses attached. I honestly think the days of “attach a high profile name to the project, and they will come” are over.
Mature and educated movie fans, and I’m not talking about teenagers or young adults who feed the franchise machines -although they seem to have their limits, i.e. Cowboys & Aliens- aren’t going to fall for just a name anymore. If that were the case, Nicholson and Witherspoon’s movie last winter would have been a hit. The world is too cynical now and we have too much information at our fingertips (internet) to be herded that easily into the theaters.
Lawrence may not be a household name, but she’s a gifted young actress. I’m glad that her talent is being nurtured because there’s far too many of her contemporaries in Hollywood that are getting roles because of their tabloid fame. Gossip rag/blog success does not translate to automatic box office success.
Maybe Weinsten has figured out what others haven’t accepted….a good story told with good talent is the best recipe for success in the modern world. Throwing some big names at a project with a half assed script that’s been poorly directed and/or edited doesn’t cut it anymore.
Ugh. Simplistic and long-winded. You are obviously unemployed.
I hate to disappoint you, but I’m very employed. But if it makes you feel better to think I’m not, then continue onward. Sorry if four simple paragraphs is too much for you, but strangely enough, you took the time to reply with unsubstantiated snark.
Did I hit a nerve? Are you one of the tabloid friendly actresses I reference, or are you a talent agent that’s afraid of loosing their cut of an unneccessary unfront fee for a supposed “marquee” client who actually CAN’T consistently deliver an audience on their name alone.
It’s just a matter of time before the studios Billy Beane the shit out the industry by following Sony’s business model with Diaz and “Bad Teacher”….small flat fee and points. The take-the-money-and-run days for talent, while the studios and investors/stockholders get left holding the financial bag, are going to come to an end.
I’m sure you’ll come back and call me long-winded…fine. But keep drinking your Kool-Aid ‘jonestown’, it’ll help dull the pain of being the ‘star’ of it.
What’s with Hollywood’s infatuation with Jennifer Lawrence?
Damn it, I had Wahlberg envisioned when I read the book. But actually Cooper could pull it off–especially when it wouldn’t seem as awkward with the vast age gap between the potential pairing of Wahlberg and Lawrence. Bradley could pull off early 30′s while the mature-looking Lawrence could be in her twenties.
Great book. Hate to sound hokey, but it inspired me to write again. This author was originally a high school teacher and decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. He then quit his day job, took a self-discovery journey in South America, and began writing his first novel at his in-law’s basement for three years. Congratulations to him. I want in-laws like that. This will definitely beat that Uncharted adaptation.
No, sorry. Jennifer Lawrence looks like she’s twenty, twenty one tops. And Bradley Cooper’s great looking, but he looks like he’s well into his 30s. No matter what, he’s going to look like the creepy, aging bachelor (or divorcee) jumping on the barely legal girl next door.
It happens in Hollywood everyday!!
So is Angelina Jolie supposed to play the ex-wife ?
No. Jolie passed on the movie months ago. Brad Pitt is tied up in Europe filming WWZ well into late October/early November and they refuse to film movies at the same time, so Jolie said thanks, but no thanks.
So they were willing to accommodate JLaw’s schedule, but not Angelina Joile’s , don’t buy it… Either she wanted it but wanted to much money or the didn’t want her but the ” schedule conflict ” is bs.
Jennifer Lawrence will be fantastic in this film. I’ll see it.
Jennifer Lawrence is already overexposed which means she will go away sooner. I hope she finds happiness in a profession to which she is more suited. I thought she was as bad in Winter’s Bone as Renee the Squint was in Cold Mountain. And forget about nominations they may have gotten. You know they are awful.
I rather see Mark do “Broken City” than this film, also instead of Brad Coop, they should offer Nate Parker or Chris Evans.
So is Jennifer playing Bradley’s daughter? Hollywood is retarded.
So, let me get this straight: Mark Wahlberg was dropped from the movie to accommodate Jennifer Lawrence’s schedule?
That’s pretty funn — I mean yeah I believe that. Mike do you have any prime Florida real estate because I’m looking to buy!
So, let me get this straight: Mark Wahlberg was dropped from the movie to accommodate Jennifer Lawrence’s schedule?
Unlikely, especially if you think about who will direct, David O. Russell, a friend of Mark.
So maybe Mark IS a smart cat in the end. *wink*
