EXCLUSIVE: Entourage creator/executive producer Doug Ellin has signed with CAA, which will also represent his company Fly the Coop Entertainment. He had been at WME for a long time. Ellin, whose HBO comedy Entourage is wrapping its eight-season run, is under a rich overall deal at the pay cable network. He is now prepping his new HBO pilot, the ensemble comedy 40 starring Ed Burns and Michael Rapaport. Before creating Entourage, Ellin worked in features, most notably writing and directing the 1998 movie Kissing a Fool.

Doug Ellin commits career suicide
yeah because CAA is so awful…..oh, wait….
In TV they’re like the 4th best shop in town.
Would love to have heard him tell Ari he’s leaving…
Get him while he’s hot CAA – just at the end of his successful TV show. Good job.
I believe he left Richard Weitz who is as good a guy as a guy can be in that horrible business.
i wanted to sign with richard weitz till i saw him at that hrts panel a few years ago — did anyone go to that? whew, real bad!
i think what you meant to say is that you wanted to sign with richard weitz until you realized that he would never sign you.
Wonder if Ari shot him with a paint ball gun when he told Ari YOUR FIRED!
Let’s not forget “Phat Beach”. We all have to start somewhere.
If he can bring dice back from the dead, he can do anything!
Doug is a talented guy.
never liked his show, but i’m a huge fan of his career. i think it had more to do with his manager so i believe he’ll be okay.
First order of business for his new team; solve the forward comb over crisis.
Am I the only one who thinks his new show sounds a lot like the low rated, just cancelled “Men Of A Certain Age”?
My thought also. However, Men of a Certain Age are ten years older – the characters were all hitting 50, rather than 40. It will be interesting to see if the same “issues” are addressed. I hear 50 is the new 40.
He must take hair lessons from Jeremy Piven. This guy is the biggest wannabe in Hollywood. He’s sad to watch in interviews.
Major blow to Ari, Weitz sucks, great get for CAA!
Doug’s got bank from Entourage. He’ll buy some new hair to make you all envious.
Why would Doug Ellin leave the agency that made him a star? Let’s not forget, he was a run of the mill feature writer who got lucky in being introduced to Mark Wahlberg and who benefitted from Mark’s relentless development savvy when Ellin’s early drafts of Entourage were terrible. But this is Endeavor business and his move to CAA makes almost no sense.
WOW! Doug Ellin is the luckiest guy in show biz and I’m sure Endeavor had a lot to do with his success.
you don’t have a show on the air for 8 seasons because you’re lucky. i say congrats on making the break from that WME/Leverage soul sucking mafia.
he’s horrendous. ed burns and michael rappaport series? yikes. disaster before they even start shooting.
Don’t really care. Only know the guy via reputation and it’s not a good one.
Am I wrong? This guy should have been thanking his lucky stars. They make him rich, cool, and successful, and then he leaves. No good deed goes unpunished in this town…
Not an Ari/Endeavor fan, but my guess is they lost interest along with HBO, on Entourage.
The huge wave started with Wahlberg & posse, doing a lot of press, Larry Charles, a seasoned writer/show runner, and a seasoned talented cast….
Ellin a TV novice “wrote/rode” it in based on an old relationship with his manager, who also managed MW, and his ego, got rid of anyone with talent writing on the show.
Giving him the reins, Entourage died a slow painful death…
Anyone read the new HBO PILOT, 40? I’ll bet MEDIOCRE, like the last few seasons of ENTOURAGE. How about getting David Schwimmer to join the cast? Now he’s a stellar guy! NOT.
TV is a producer’s medium, and that may be Ellin’s skill, cuz it’s not his writing abilities.
Just saying…thanks for kicking a lot of people to the curb Doug, my non-friend. You r a douche bag, and CAA is the appropriate fallback to sit and wait for the next ride.
PS. Gotta love Scott Caan!
No dog in this race, but Entourage was once a truly great show for 4 seasons and then a truly awful one for 4 seasons. No doubt Ellin was enormously lucky, but he did put out a quality show for a number of years. 40 sounds lame, but you never know. I guess we’ll see if he has another one in him.
Anyone who gets a show on the air is lucky. Anyone who keeps a show on the air for eight seasons is talented. Doug has talented. He knows what he likes and you can’t fault him for that. His shortcomings have to do with his people skills. He is abrasive and can be wildly inappropriate dealing with others in the work place. But he’s not alone. Ally Musika is a cancer and was a contributer to a hostile set. A vile person. Don’t let her fool you. But all is forgiven if your making money. Everyone turns a blind eye. Good luck Doug and CAA.
just hope he didn’t sign with steve smooke
He prob got tired of spliting everything a million ways. Wme packaging is terrible so you have to pay tons in ads then you have to have a million producers. Everyone has to get a cut. Why is eva mendez in everything. If I was a writer I would leave.
