Actress/comedian Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) has been cast as a new regular on Fox’s medical drama House next season. Along with fellow new cast addition Odette Annable, Yi will play a new member of Dr. Gregory House’s (Hugh Laurie) diagnostics team at Princeton-Plainsboro. Yi, repped by UTA, and Mosaic, also wrote, executive produced and starred in the documentary Paper Heart.

YI!!!!
she is so cute, talented and funny. i love her!
wtf? this is going to be a total clusterfuck…but possibly a very entertaining one.
Most annoying, cloying actress ever. Almost ruined Knocked Up for me even though she was only in two scenes. I’m sure she’s a nice person, she seems to have some loyal friends based on comment threads, but please – does anyone remember when the words “subtlety” and “nuance” were tools utilized by actors?
I whole-heartedly agree. She is a “John Kerry” of an actress. She is a wart on my toe. She has no purpose for existing. Why anybody thinks she deserves to exist is beyond me, let alone someone loving her and wanting to spend time with her (thankfully via TV and not in person) every week.
If she’s even one tenth as annoying as she was in “Paper Heart,” I’ll quit watching “House.” Nails on a chalkboard.
I already quit watching House when, in the finale, they decided that the character was actually capable of those actions. That decision ended the show and killed the character for me.
I hope someone at Fox wises up before they totally ruin the show “House”. Her deadpan demeanor is painful to watch, a real buzz-kill.
charlene is insanely talented and a sweetheart, to boot. excited to see her on one of television’s best shows!
YEAH!! She’s got the goods. It’s about time someone got smart…very smart in the Hyhood.
I can’t wait for her to go toe to toe with the Hughester.
She’ll mop him up just by stating her case and the facts.
I mean she’ll really nail him!
Wait…that didn’t come out right.
Yi-pppppie. Love Charleyne Yi. Loved her as the pothead in KNOCKED UP. Saw her show at the UCB Theatre a couple years back. She’s so funny. Glad she got a regular gig. I’d like to see her on a comedy though in the future.
Oh and PAPER HEART was a hoot – lots of fun.
Charlyne is the best, she’s funny as hell and she can write, perform, play music, etc. She is the whole package. So happy for her, and this is great casting.
Charlyne Yi… Just another “hipster” that Hollywood wants to anoint to cool status — the cute Asian gal who typifies the nerdy, suburban geek boy’s wet dream of a girlfriend.
Unfortunately, while she is cute she is marginally funny and the movies she’s been in have totally sucked and underperformed. Paper Heart was malformed and self-indulgent. I wish people who actually had unquestionable talent and were successful got noted on Deadline and not just people with pseudo-cred or a veneer of scene-ster, Crown Heights/Park Slope appeal.
Wow, this has to be one of the most hilariously bitter comments I’ve ever read on Deadline, like, pretty much ever. Who are you?!
Re: Mr What?
You asked: “who am I”
In short, I am the pin to the Hollywood dirigible of marginal talent inflated to hot-aired self important indulgence that inflates C-level celebrities way above their talent grade. I am in agreement with the poster who sums up Ms. Yi thusly: annoying as hell. She’s appealing in the way that geeky suburban white boys with yellow fever might find appealing. Not my cup of tea at all. The mumblecore generation can have her all to themselves.
Overrated “actress” in half-baked shows at best. I wish Charlyne Yi well but this drippy love-in for her is inversely proportional to her level of so-called talent. “Paper Heart” was lame at best – and a pure, unadulterated snooze fest that would have any insomniac with his or her mouth agape in unrelenting slumber.
So that’s two new regulars for “House”. Any more? And they couldn’t come up with the cash to give Lisa Edelstein, who plays one of the show’s most important characters, to return for one last season?
I enjoyed “Paper Heart” (a great date movie), and I respect Yi’s willingness to portray her character as grating and unappealing for the sake of entertainment — but “Paper Heart” was no documentary. As Yi herself pointed out many times, she was playing a character named Charlyne Yi (like Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld, and many others have done before); she and Michael Cera never dated; and most of the movie was scripted.
Very exciting. Charlyne Yi is so good.
She seems like a sweet and nice person. But annoying as hell.
horrible picture.
Hmmmmm. Ok. I just checked out Rotten Tomatoes and according to it, Paper Heart scored lower than 60 percent. So that pretty much says it sucks. Now people are on here, the much vaunted Deadline Hollywood, lauding that as a great/funny/awesome movie even though a respected online guide pretty much suggests its oozed blazing mediocrity. And now these same people want me to believe that Charlyne Yi is awesome/funny/the Second Coming?
Man, you hipsters who embrace marginal comedies (and their equally marginal “stars”) need to get out more. It sounds as if Charlyne Yi’s media handlers are working overtime today on Deadline. She is OK. Nothing special. And not really a looker. And while being nice counts for something it doesn’t qualify one for a Hollywood career, right? I guess I could give her points for diversity and bringing a fresh Asian face to comedy that isn’t Margaret Cho or Tina Kim…
she kinda looks like a cross between ET and Yoda. Not very attractive at all. With a mug like that Charlyne is consigned to character roles, if that. She has luck on her side being a Comic Con fan boy’s fantasy date. I suppose that in a Hollywood universe where the Kardashians are printing money, there’s a place for Ms. Yi.
I’ve only watched one episode of the show with Ms. Yi, but the show that aired on October 17th regarding the exit of Olivia Wilde’s character was excellent. I was surprised to hear the closing song by The Wellspring, “The Ballad of El Goodo”. Nice way to go out. I downloaded it for free at thewellspringmusic.com.
i have to say i get pretty tired, pretty quickly of her tweeness and self-deprecating behavior. she is a regular on conan (who i love) and continually says things like, “oh, i really suck” and “i suck as an actress” and “how did i even get this job”, blah, blah, blah. her poor little me crap gets old. annoying.
Charlyne Yi is the worst actress I have seen in a while. It makes watching House torture. I have decided to find something else to watch Monday nights. I just can’t take her. She has no talent!! When will Fox figure that out. Aren’t they listening to their viewers?! This show has gone down hill.
apparently casting for this show didnt realize theres like 3 billion other asians to choose from!! 99% of them will have more talent then her
I love Charlyne! She’s adorable! She has a droll sense of humor. She is a very interesting character on House.
