EXCLUSIVE: Marcus Nispel, whose Conan the Barbarian reboot opens today, has made a deal with Liquid Comics to launch the comic book series The Chosen. The plotline involves a Detroit kid who seems an unlikely candidate but who is the latest incarnate of an Eastern spiritual master whose tradition goes back generations. The teen’s awakening to these asweom powers that have been refined over a century’s worth of incarnations, begin to manifest themselves and take him on a journey from the Detroit streets to the underground gangland of Mumbai. Nispel created the storyling with Liquid co-founders Gotham Chopra and Sharad Devarajan. It’s based on an original movie treatment that Nispel has been developing to direct. The three-issue comic series will launch in February.
“I like movies that turn into graphic novels and graphic novels that turn into movies,” Nispel said in a statement. “Everything I direct starts with illustrations, and the pictures tell the story.”
Said Chopra: “Marcus’ vision of a muscled up Kung Fu has been something I’ve loved since the moment he first told me the story. The Master-Apprentice narrative from King Arthur to John Connor is a formula that works and with Marcus onboard something wildly creative is emerging.”

This is not going to happen. Not after the terrible numbers at the box office for Conan 3D. 26% on RT, wow! Nispel is about done as a filmmaker.
Looks interesting. Nispel does some wildly visual films so completely makes sense he would create a comic series
I’m looking forward to the Marvel comics version of THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE.
And when they re-boot the film, I hope they do it in 3D.
The casting of Margo, Rachael and Sherry will make for a dozen posts here.
You’re… joking… Right? And even I have to quest which part is more hilarious. It as a comic or as a remake…
Nispel’s visual flare + “muscled up Kung Fu” = good time. I’m in.
Very Buffy in it’s way 9the tv show not the film.) I can’t wait! BB
Three issues? So, this is to basically seal the deal for it to be come a movie.
Hmmmmmm. Not too sure that Nispel’s career is going anywhere.
This is more about Liquid Comics than anything else. It’s a very cool place to associate with. Couldn’t happen to two smarter or nicer guys than Gotham and Sharad.
So this is Iron Fist + The Doctor from The Authority? If I re-skin two of somebody else’s ideas can I have a comic book/movie deal that will never happen too?
The best you can say about a deal like this? He’s on the right path. As far as yanking on others’ ideas? Don’t tell Quentin not to do that. Mash ups are mash ups. In this global world of a global and diversified audience…you want to make movies for, better know how to write and direct an image – driven narrative, more so than greta dialogue will ever provide.
