EXCLUSIVE: The CW is looking to beat the midseason rerun blues by supersizing the orders of four returning drama series. The network has picked up two additional episodes each of soaps Gossip Girl and 90210, bringing their orders to 24 episodes, and one additional episode each of veteran Supernatural and sophomore Nikita, which will go up to 23 episodes each. Notably missing is CW’s flagship drama The Vampire Diaries. That stems from the show’s inability to accommodate additional episodes because of its extensive post-production process that leads to longer production times. (Additionally, co-showrunner Kevin Williamson is also shepherding the new CW series The Secret Circle). This is the second time the CW has expanded the seasons of existing series — it ordered additional episodes of Gossip Girls and One Tree Hill a couple of years ago — but it has never done it on such scale, with four series. It is part of new CW president Mark Pedowitz’s plan to bring lull periods of reruns during the season to a minimum. He already ordered three series for midseason at the upfronts: reality series Re-Modeled and The Frame and the final season of veteran One Tree Hill.

I wish Gossip Girl hadn’t picked two more episodes up because they can’t even write a regular 22 worth watching.
Agreed. Same goes for 90210 and Supernatural. The CW really needs to be investing a new, better shows not recycling the same tired crap.
Supernatural is a great show!!!!! I love that they added more episodes.:p
Ew, why? Even Gossip Girl’s fans don’t want extra episodes of Gossip Girl.
It’s still only 4 episodes total. Probably a good start though, even though they’ll never be a real network.
Stop saying that The CW is not a real network! GG and 90210 get more episodes because their cheaper to produce. However, they must improve. I’m not blaming Pedowitz, he’s just trying to help The CW from Ostroff’s wrong decisions…
Oh, so they’re a fake network now – as in the don’t exist? Must have missed that memo. Yes, the CW is a crappy network. But, saying they’re not a real network is just ridiculous.
Excellent. One more episode not to watch.
Of which show – Supernatural or Nikita? I would think with a username like yours, you’d be a fan of Nikita.
I truly hope this is Gossip Girl’s last season. Put th sishow out of its misery already.
YES!! One more episode of Sam and Dean to watch. The ONLY show on CW worth watching now that Smallville is gone.
I totally agree with you.
)
I wouldn’t say it’s the only show worth watching actually, but definitely ONE of the only ones.
Who is Dean?
So very true, Except that there is Vampire Diaries:) Did everyone forget about that show?
I was hoping it was OTH when I saw this article…UGH. Disappointment.
Why? They made it clear when they announced OTH’s renewal that these were ‘the final 13 episodes’ and it’s been billed as the final season all along. I don’t understand why people were expecting that to change.
This is actually a good thing, ordering more episodes gives the show a better chance of getting a storyline across. I think they are trying to off the bad decisions in the past.. I am sure we will be pleased with this!
Nikita will go up to 23 episodes!!!
Trevor Donovan/Teddy was the only story line in all 3 seasons of 90210 worth watching and now he’s leaving the show A+ move, and has 2 studio movies lined up. Lesson CW actors, jump ship NOW before the ice berg hits!
Trevor’s not leaving the show… The new show runners stated that was just a false rumor. He is actually just not going to be in the whole season as a cast regular any more. The rumor on his “only 5 episodes” was also false. They said they are not sure how many he will appear in so far, but they enjoy writing for him and don’t want the character of Teddy going anywhere.
Yay for more Gossip Girl! Great show!
23 will give SPN 149. Why not 24? Why? LOL. Probably the most under radar show to have that many epis. Too bad syndication is buried in 10 am slot on TNT.
The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural are the only good shows CW has at present. I can understand VD not getting extra episodes. I think Ringer and The Secret Circle will do well, draw in large audiences (or at least large for the CW, 2-3 million) Or at least I hope. I don’t see how they thought Hart of Dixie would pick up an audience. It just doesn’t sound good. Also, all this reality crap is really bad. They need to stick to scripted drama.
I think The Vampire Diaries, Nikita and Supernatural are the only quality shows on the network. I’m excited for The Secret Circle and I hope Hart of Dixie will do well. It reminds me of those classic WB type shows. I have to disagree about Ringer, though. I’m not sure it will do well or draw in a large audience even for the CW. Guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
I agree that Ringer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will want to see Sarah Michelle Geller again) and The Secret Circle(created by TVDs Kevin Williamson, after all!)will probably do well, but I think Hart of Dixie will also get an audience. I like the idea of a woman doctor having to leave her comfort zone and have experiences in a new place. I just hope they treat her character with respect and not like some ditzy female.
Mark has to do something to curb the trend of airing reruns on that network constantly. Just look at the ratings for this summer alone as to how putred and embarrassing they are. ION is beating them out and that’s saying quite a bit from a network airing old reruns of shows from years past versus what the CW airs right now. Ostroff would have just kept airing reruns until next year, if she was still in chargem, but thank goodness she isn’t anymore.
Yay for Nikita getting 23 episodes! I wish The Vampire Diaries had gotten more as well, but I’m okay with 22 episodes. Those are the only two shows I watch on this network.
Boo to Gossip Girl and 90210 getting more episodes than The Vampire Diaries and Nikita, though. Sorry, but I just can’t stand those shows in the least.
“Notably missing is CW’s flagship drama The Vampire Diaries. That stems from the show’s inability to accommodate additional episodes because of its extensive post-production process that leads to longer production times.”
I should think the same would apply to Supernatural, which also is an effects heavy tv show. Thankfully the producers on that show CAN deliver an extra episode.
An extra episode of Supernatural? Sign me up!
Oh why not vampire diaries!i understand that is hard because of its post-production but for the love of god better give more money to a series with great actors and a fantastic storyline than to a tv show with no meaning of excistance !!!i’m really glad that supernatural gets at least 1 episode!!!
Can’t wait for the new Supernatural season. I have afeeling it’s gonna be a great season. SN is sooo under rated, one of the best shows on T.V.
This is random, but I just read in am New York that Teddy Montgomery, who is departing 90210, is 32 years old. Damn, I remember how much flack Luke Perry got for playing a high schooler when he was actually 25 years old.
Yeah Supernatural FTW!
If only I didn’t have to wait for so long for it to start in New Zealand – usually a couple of months after the United States
