EXCLUSIVE: Dakota Fanning will star in the title role of Effie, the Emma Thompson-scripted period biopic about the unfortunate marriage between Euphemia Gray and the famed critic John Ruskin in 1850s London. Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New York) is directing. Though the teenager was gorgeous, Effie’s husband never consummated the marriage over five years because Ruskin was for some reason disgusted by her body. After suffering through a loveless marriage and browbeating by her in-laws, Effie fell in love with Ruskin’s protégé, painter John Everett Millais.
Greg Wise will play Ruskin, and Tom Sturridge will play Millais. Thompson plays Lady Eastlake, who takes Effie under her wing when it was clear the union was destroying the young woman. Julie Walters and Derek Jacobi play Ruskin’s parents, and Edward Fox is in talks to play Lady Eastlake’s husband, Sir Charles Eastlake. He was the main patron of the Royal Academy, which held sway over what constituted fine art. He was already fed up with Ruskin and his radical ideas before that love triangle rocked the art community. Production will begin Oct. 17 in Scotland, London and Venice. The film’s being produced by Don Rosenfeld with Andreas Roald. They raised the $10 million budget through private equity.
The foreplay on this movie lasted as long the marriage between Effie and Ruskin, but at least here, Effie has the satisfaction of a start date. Along the way, Carey Mulligan and Saoirse Ronan had previously been reported as circling the Effie role, but the movie’s momentum was interrupted when Gregory Murphy took the producers to court claiming copyright infringement regarding his play The Countess, which also probed the Ruskin marriage. All this works out well for Fanning, who is now 17.
“It’s Emma Thompson’s first original script after doing several fine adaptations, and it gets to the heart of Victorian England,” said Rosenfeld, the former head of Merchant Ivory Productions. Rosenfeld and Roald are also producers of the Terrence Malick-directed The Voyage of Time, for which Thompson has signed on to be one of the narrators. “The script for Effie was always brilliant, but sometimes these things take time.” Rosenfeld said. The timing allowed them to raise the funding without having to pre-sell foreign or domestic territories. That won’t come until the film’s premiere, which the filmmakers hope will come at the 2012 Venice Film Festival.
Fanning, who just wrapped the final two installments of Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, is repped by One Talent Management and The Osbrink Agency.

Are the Brits the only ones who can produce marvelous films for $10 million? Disney should give the Brits the $250 million once slated for The Lone Ranger. Then we’d get 25 better films from the UK.
I can certainly make a marvelous film for $10 million here in the US. But the financiers would say “Emma WHO?” and make me cast Megan Fox as Lady Eastlake.
Oh great. Another movie that will be in development hell for years and then end up playing for a week in some obscure theater in a city far away from me.
And even with Megan Fox no one would go to see it because the title and concept are both incredibly unappealing.
“even with megan fox” “no one will go see it because the title and concept are unappealing”. Are you serious? sounds incredibly appealing to me. The title is a problem why? Your gold standard of “megan fox” seems insane and what exactly would you find appealing and go see? I think I know, no need to answer.
Title is boring and unmemorable (though I’ve heard much worse in the past week alone), concept does not appeal to a wide audience. And Megan Fox isn’t ANYBODY’S gold standard, but she probably has slightly more box office appeal than Dakota Fanning in general. (Not in THIS, though. In a movie with exploding robots.)
I am looking forward to Emma Thompson’s, Effie! Ms. Thompson’s extraordinary story telling is a force to be reckoned with. She understands the delicate balance needed for this type of project. There is a great demand for these types of period pieces here in the U.S.A., but we need Thompson’s talent to give Effie a proper voice. She understands that there are intelligent Americans that appreciate this type of material and she won’t dumb it down.
Don Rosenfeld one of the producers is an American.
Loves me some Greg Wise. Glad to see he’ll be in this one.
Unfortunately this sounds like a boring movie being made to only indulge Emma Thompson. Where’s the market for this type of movie??Of course!…Let’s play the trailer right between the raunchy comedies and “comic book” tentpoles…and watch those tickets sell.sadly this doesn’t have the story appeal of the “King’s English”…
The market for this type of film is adults who have a brain and don’t want to see mindless violence and comic book movies. If it doesn’t interest you, then don’t see it, that’s kind of simple. Emma’s already won one Oscar for her screenwriting, it this is something she’s interested in doing, I’m interested in seeing it.
And do you mean The King’s Speech? If so, on paper, this sounds just as interesting if not more to me.
Yes! Emma scored 98% at Rotten Tomatoes for Sense and Sensibility, which she scripted. She also has an Academy Award for best actress. This is really a great opportunity for Dakota, and I’m especially happy that she’ll again get to work with UK film makers–IMO, very important for her.
Fantastic cast and Dakota Fanning is just right for the role. She is gorgeous just like the title character is said to be.
I love this cast and Thompson knows how to polish the essence of a story. This will be a movie for those of us who outgrew comic books when we were 13. (OK, I like Batman movies, but would skip the rest if fanboy and fangirl friends and relatives didn’t drag me to them.)
A historical Victorian script paired with talent by the likes of Dakota Fanning, American Royalty, will appeal to and please those movie goers thirsting for themes rooted in history and culture. It will most likely prove to be a fine opportunity for the lead role, an extremely talented young woman loved by many, to shine. I personally will look forward to its premiere at the 2012 Venice Film Festival.
That’s an brilliant cast! Jacobi & Walters are especially good.
Dakota is gorgeous. Is it OK to think she’s sexy yet?
Not quite yet, my love. But soon.
Oops! I certainly hope it’s OK!
Not interested. Pass.
“The Countess” was a very successful off Broadway play. I always wondered why it never seemed to resurface anywhere–revivals, regional productions, etc. I wonder if that’s because the author was tied up in fights about this and wasn’t handing out the rights to anyone? It just has seemed odd.
Dakota Fanning to play a woman who marries at 40? She barely looks 20.
And hello… this is a story about the art world, not whether some dude wants to bone her or not.
Read up Emma:

Dakota is playing Euphemia Gray who married Ruskin when she was in her teens. Emma Thompson is portraying Lady Elizabeth Eastlake nee Elizabeth Rigby.
This is FANTASTIC subject matter for Thompson to take on. My wife has talked about and written about Effie for as long as I’ve known her. We even got married in a church visited by Effie because my wife so enjoys the beauty and triumph of this woman’s story. There’s passion, beauty, hypocrisy, a villain, and love triumphing over all. To say this subject matter isn’t film-worthy is like saying Shakespeare didn’t have much to say. I like a good superhero movie as much as the next …no, more than the next movie-goer, they’re a nice adrenaline rush, but these kinds of films stimulate the brain and conversation. I agree with the comment about giving the Brits the $200 million the Lone Ranger was going to use… Thompson and company could probably send back a great twenty films… Including a first-rate Lone Ranger!
David Boze,
I got my reply to your comment in the wrong place: it’s below. Sorry.
All-in-alll, this is a great opportunity for Dakota. I believe her extraordinary performance in Hounddog proved the dramatic talent that’s now blossoming. I’m very happy for her!
Like!
It seems that the story is about much more than an odd situation. I’d watch anything with both Dakota and Emma Thompson in it, but now, you’ve really made the movie very appealing.
This is a very juicy story! For years I have thought about writing a play myself. No one points out that, after the annulment for nonconsummation of the marriage, Effie had 7 or 8 children with Millais. She made up for lost time and whatnot. SHE sued for annulment, not him, And Ruskin was so quirky. What a character. It is a fabulous, fascinating story. Can’t wait to see it. Emma Thompson should do it credit.
I have also wondered if the Elizabeth/Lawrence failed marriage in UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS was inspired by Ruskin and Effie. Hmmmmmmmm.
this is wonderful for dakota,,,,,i have really enjoyed her in all her movies,,,,,,,,you go girl,,,,,,,,,and may God bless you,,,,,,,,
will sure miss you in the movies where you were so young.
i have watched you grow up right here in my living room,,,,take care, karen
“Megan fox”. Hello!! Irony? Oy.
Although I do like what iv read about the story line and who will be staring in it, part of me is hoping the film isn’t a success!!
My daughter is called EFFY and it is a very unpopular name and receives lots of attention and comments when her name is said in public. The release of this film will more than likely make the name very popular and become very common. (Gosh how selfish do I come across!!)
I’m reading the new bio of Effie by Suzanne Fagence Cooper. Will she be involved in the project as a consultant?
I did not take “Effie” to court as your article reports. Both Emma Thompson and Greg Wise were sent copies of my play and screenplay “The Countess” to play John Ruskin and Lady Eastlake, the roles they are to play in “Effie”. My play, “The Countess” ran Off-Broadway for two years and has been produced worldwide According to papers filed by Emma Thompson’s producers, “Effie” cannot move forward until the court has made a declaratory judgment stating there has been no copyright infringement. This case is not yet on the court calendar. Under the circumstances, Emma Thompson’s producer’s assertion that “Effie” is to begin filming in October is baffling to say the least.
Gregory Murphy
Well, I’ve finished reading the recent Effie biography by Suzanne Fagence Cooper. I came away quite excited about the prospect of a movie: Effie’s story is multi-faceted, with enough drama and cultural themes to keep an audience riveted. Emma Thompson, as Lady Eastlake, ought to be fabulous, but it will be Dakota Fanning who will carry the biggest load. As she’s done several times before, this will be a big step for Dakota: Effie really isn’t a teen role and this could be Dakota’s best and, by far, her most important movie so far. I’m wondering if Dr. Cooper will be a consultant on the project; it sure seems that she would be highly valuable in that capacity.
WOW oh Wow — DAKOTA Fanning Grows up in EFFIE! I cannot wait to see this film — when will it be released? Thanks.
