EXCLUSIVE: While Johnny Depp waits to see if director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer can figure out a way to salvage The Lone Ranger after Disney halted the film because of a huge budget, Depp is making forward progress on dusting off another period property. David Koepp has been set to write the script for the remake of the 76-year-old film The Thin Man, the remake that Depp set up last year at Warner Bros as a vehicle to re-team with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall. Depp will produce with his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski, Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick, Marshall and John DeLuca. There was talk that Jerry Stahl was going to write, but apparently nothing was written and Koepp is going to start from scratch. Which means he’ll go back to the Dashiell Hammett novel that spawned the series of six MGM films that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Depp will play Nick, the former detective who marries an adorable young socialite, drinks a lot and occasionally solves a case. There is no word yet on who’ll join Depp and play Nora. The original intention is to take elements of the first two films and work them into one film, putting it into a period setting and giving it a Sherlock Holmes-like stylized treatment. Marshall also intends to use his talent as a choreographer (remember he did Chicago) and work in a musical number or two. Koepp directed Depp in the 2004 thriller Secret Window, which Koepp adapted from a Stephen King novel. Koepp recently came aboard to rewrite the Jack Ryan film at Paramount that still has Jack Bender attached to direct and Chris Pine aboard to play the CIA analyst in his formative years as Paramount tries to reboot that Tom Clancy-created franchise. Adam Cozad had written the earlier draft. Koepp has time to write after completing Premium Rush, the film he co-wrote and directed, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon starring. Koepp’s repped by CAA and attorney David Fox.

The Thin Man remake needs to go the way of The Lone Ranger remake. Don’t know if it’s Johnny or his wealthy support team making some poor choices lately, but seems as if intervention or a major shake-up is needed. Great man with too much talent to go to waste.
So they are taking elements from the first two movies? I wonder if they will do the scene where Nick is shooting balloons off the Christmas tree, while Nora is watching him quietly, waiting for him to finish. That is not only a classic scene but one of the best ones in The Thin Man. Oh boy now as I think about it, it just can’t be remade as well as William Powell and Myrna Loy did it. SIGH…
I’m a Depp fan, but he’s a lot of things and the kind of funny he needs to be for this genre of comedy is not one of them. This of course is pretty obvious, so I suspect the Depp version is a long shot. R Downey Jr would be a much better fit. On the other hand, somebody thought Depp would be good as a dowdy math teacher from Wisconsin in “The Tourist,” so this mistake might actually happen.
It’s Deep I wouldn’t be worried about. It’s Marshall, who simply can’t make a competent film. His Pirate film was the worst by far. Memoirs of a Geisha? Terrible bomb. Nine? Terrible bomb. Sure he can make them beautiful to look at but no substance.
Make him the costume designer and bring in a capable director w/ vision.
NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
Depp may be many things to many people but he is NO William Powell!!! I can just imagine his mannered, overplayed “drunken” Nick and there is NO current actress w/the sophistication or comic timing of Myrna Loy who could carry the role of Nora.
For cryin’ out loud Hollywood, come up w/a f#*king ORIGINAL idea!!!
Good lord. Very few people that go to movies today, have ever seen the 75-year-old original. All I remember is the tv show, with Peter Lawford. I’d love to see Depp’s take on this. Ok, everyone can now go back to moaning and groaning.
I was open to this idea until I read, “…and work in a musical number or two.” No, just no.
a musical? give me a break. listen johny if your looking for another frachise roll talk to marvel and grab a super hero roll befor there all gone atleast when that one tanks you can blame stan lee
I loved the book, my wife and I both loved the movies, and we’re excited they are trying a remake (whether based on the book, the movies, or both in some combination). Getting Nora properly cast will be an obvious challenge, and maybe the whole thing will be a disaster in the end, but I don’t really see the downside–the book and the original movies will still be there no matter what happens with this effort.
Oh, and Weisz’s work in The Mummy and The Brothers Bloom makes me think she is a legitimate possibility for Nora.
Mark K. I could not have said it better. I’m stoked. I have always enjoyed reading Dashiell Hammett. I just called my husband. He’s stoked too. We love all!!!!!! the “Thin Man” movies. We own them all. We watch them over and over. Our nine year old daughter loves them, she picks them out to watch on her own. William Powell was the ultimate leading man, and Myrna Loy, beautiful, saucy, and very coy. I just hope they include “Asta”. In fact we have an “Asta”. Only black one in a litter of white. If you are a “Thin Man” fan you’ll understand. I can’t think of a better choice in Johnny Depp to play Nick Charles! Let’s just hope they do “Nora” (Myrna Loy) justice. Please just keep it a period film, set in the 1930′s-1940′s.
Just an add to my previous comment. I’m thinking a musical is not the way to go.
Nothing has been sacred for a long time now(speaking of Hollywood here)… The Grinch who stole Christmas… Charlie and the Chocolate Factory…. The Seven Samurai(the Magnificent Seven)… ad infinitum. This is nothing new, and it doesn’t stop with just remakes…. think of the sequels they put out, and put out badly, including The Thin Man. The Thin Man Goes Home is Terrible. I really do enjoy the chemistry between Powell & Loy though and Hammett’s a great writer of the genre and should be noted he had nothing to do with The Thin Man Goes Home. The Maltese Falcon(another Hammett) can’t be far off. I cringe to think who would take the Humphrey Bogart’s role as Sam Spade though. Gives me the jibblies. There are good original movies being made all the time… Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels… Inception…. O’ Brother Where Art Thou?( a remake of The Odyssey I know, but very originally done) ANYway… Hollywood has no shame.
When you take a fantastic, classic movie and make a remake, you just ruin the memory of a great movie and invite unflattering comparisons.
I hope the production shuts down.
Why do modern day remakes of classic films sometimes fall short of the original classics? The Robert Downey and Jude Law rendition of the Sherlock Holmes stories works because they have their own “fresh and natural” interaction between each other which in no way duplicates the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce or other classic versions. Also, the new SH scripts and plots are first rate and the action sequences do not detract from the plot.
If today’s Hollywood can pull off a 2 week production schedule like W. S. Van Dyke did for the “classic” Thin Man movies, this would work and make a modern day, period piece “as fresh and natural” as the Powell and Loy versions. So how is modern day Hollywood going to pull this off and make it “fresh and natural.”
Dashiell Hammett, I believe, was involved in the screenplays for the two sequels to the “original” The Thin Man movie based on his novel. Trying to modernize and upstage this effort is going to be very difficult and probably very, very expensive.
Johnny Depp would be a good ” gumshoe” choice if one wanted to remake the “Boston Blackie” mysteries (originally played by Chester Morris) which had a reformed jewel thief that (1) did magic tricks, (2) had numerous disguises, and (3) had a funny, street-wise sidekick named “The Runt.” In the written “Boston Blackie” stories, his side kick was his wife which is similar to Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles relationship, but with more serious overtones.
We know that Johnny Depp can act, but is he a “natural” choice to be the next Nick Charles on the screen or should it be another detective?
Re-making The Thin Man will be challenging particularly if the “hype” is true about turning the original, “classic” first two movies in this series into a single movie with musical numbers. I just do not see how this will work?
I’m a huge fan of the original “Thin Man” films and I’m not crazy about remakes but this feels right. Depp is the perfect man to step into Powell’s shoes. I am very much looking forward to this picture.
I do think that Amy Adams would be a great choice for Nora.
Horray someone i can agree with a remake will not change the original clasic movies, the tv show with peter lawford and phyllis kirk didnt they were two diffrent nicks and two completely diffrent noras (i think the tv show was soooooo much better] s let the remake begin and see what happens. Betcha it will be totally diffrent from the other two nick and noras.
Quit comparing people ,no one can fill anyones shoes if hollywood wanted to fill any ones shoes they would have quit after the original movies were made. But guess what this is the third remake. Who knows it might be good!
William Powell was a fabulous actor. Johnny Depp would make a great Nick Charles. The Thin Man character was very charismatic and funny, something Johnny Depp is. At least their not considering Tom Cruise!
I totally agree with you! This oneof the classics that should not be messed with! It’s one thing to remake a so-so film, but not the ones that have stood the test of time and are rated with the max number of star ratings. Johnny and company should put their tents and money elsewhere!
im curious to c how it wld turn out. the movies were made 40 years before i was born and they r my all time favs. if they do it i hope they make it well and do it rite. it will never b the original but i can hope for the best. and depp is my fav actor and he could possibly pull it off but again who knows
