EXCLUSIVE: Dimension Films is making a deal with Tim Hill to direct its reboot of Short Circuit, the 1986 film about an experimental robot manufactured to be a weapon until a lightning strike fills it with intelligence. It runs away and befriends a fractured family, the military in hot pursuit. Hill directed the Illumination pic Hop and Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks. Dimension optioned the remake rights in 2009, originally signing Paul Blart: Mall Cop helmer Steve Carr and screenwriter Dan Milano. The project has languished and Hill is being brought in to supervise a new script and get the iconic robot Johnny 5 moving. David Foster, who produced the original, is producing with Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. Hill is repped by Gersh and Principato-Young.

I thought David Foster has been dead for 15 years…wait, maybe that’s just his career.
Yes, by all means let’s revist the waves of escapist joy that was “Short Circuit”. It’s such a shame that nobody seems to be able to write those kinds of pictures anymore. You know, the lovable robot/alien/border collie/super hero/speed bag character and their wacky adventures, growing older and wiser with each passing plot point. Bring it on Hollywood! Can’t wait to pay my $12.50 and go see this.
Sounds like an extremely bad idea.
No Guttenberg = No Dice
As long as they recreate the dance scene inside a McDonald’s, I’m fine with this.
Are you thinking of Mac and Me?
Don’t the Weinsteins always try to do too much?
The dan milano draft was great, hope they don’t change it much…bring back fisher stevens willya please
Did the Dan Milano draft have lots of robot dicks?
The Dan Milano draft sucked. Are you crazy?
Doesn’t anyone want to work in Hollywood anymore? Is asking for an original idea too much? How ridiculous….no wonder movie attendance has fallen more this year than the stock market.
You’re absolutely right, and you’re not a cynic, you’re an idealist. Which is what Hollywood needs right now. I mean, COME ON. A Short Circuit reboot? Where has all the talent and inspiration gone? Where are the true artists?
I’ll tell you where all of the talent and new ideas are. We’re getting our manuscripts rejected with remarks like ‘it’s not what we’re looking for.’ I have a script that falls into this category. I haven’t given up though. There’s bound to be someone out there who is looking for something like what I have. If I have to jump the border to Canada to see my project produced- it’ll be Hollywood’s loss.
Keep up the good fight. I know that people of talent still exist, it’s just the moguls of no talent or vision who are in charge. In a marketplace of pap and retreads, can’t they see the business opportunity here? Take risks! I guess it’s just a herd mentality.
Hollywood is a business. We all know that. Decisions are made by people looking to increase earnings. Love that or hate it, it’s the truth.
We’re in a wave of “Stick with what works” right now. Good decision?/Bad decision? – That’s moot.
If studios offer a Mall poll asking; “What movie from your youth (that you’d take your kids to see!) should be re-made?” or “What do you think about a movie where a robot that gets struck by lightening and comes alive only to find comedic trouble?” (while handing out free coupons to Cinnabon), what do you think they’re gonna do?
Don’t worry…It’ll HOPEFULLY revolve around again.
(We just need another miracle.)
wE aRe aLL rObOT5 – the studios
Hollowwood, Followwood, Wallowwood, Smallowood. Original idea’s are NOT a dime a dozen.
Yet another movie that doesn’t need to be “rebooted”. The original was cute and pretty much family-friendly (though a bit hokey at times), mainly due to the cast and the story… I don’t see them matching either in a reboot.
The SHORT CIRCUIT re-boot was already made. It was called WALL-E.
Hilarious! So right!
…and WALL-E was rubbish. They shouldn’t mess with a classic
So did Demension hate the Milano draft?
Fractured family? That’s not the plot.
Why?
At the very least Johnny 5 better not be some dumb looking CGI robot. I am sick of them overusing CGI. We have the ability to actually have a kick ass real robot in this.
Christ, just when you think the reboot-mania has eased up a bit, they go trolling into the 1980s section of the pool. What’s next? Top Gun? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Blues Brothers?
Don’t blame the writers – they’re just trying to get paying gigs. Blame clueless, non-creative studio execs that just look at spreadsheets, not originality. You’d think after GI Joe and the upcoming stinker Battleship they’d get the idea that not every board game, toy, or 10-to-20-year-old movie needs to be the next (Lord help us) 3D feature.
ENOUGH ALREADY!!
another remake??? please, give me something new
So “Short Circuit” wasn’t a brilliant 80s movie but there were a lot worse and surely it would pay to try and rehash something which failed the first time around than messing with a movie which more people enjoyed than hated.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Boycott. Instant boycott.
The original is too near and dear to my heart for me to ever support this. Please, for the love of God, can somebody just put their foot down and say “Enough with the damn remakes already”???
No disassemble another 80′s movie!
please stop complaining about remakes some are not great but without them we wouldnt have great movies like, the fly,the blob, house of wax,the thing, dracula, dawn of the dead.im all for original ideas but they have all been done before, and im welcome to old ideas seen through new light
a remake of a sub-par movie, made by the same mind that made Hop and Alvin, two other sub-par movies.
nothing about this will be noteworthy, except maybe how bad it is.
Writers who can’t get their original scripts through. Get in touch with ycombinator and help them fix Hollywood. That’s the challenge they have set themselves, and they’ll need your help to do it.
I can’t believe all the complainers about reboots. You’re all acting like a reboot has any effect on the original. If you like an older movie, it will still be there, unaltered, I promise. And as for originality, just how many new movies do you think come out every year? People live to complain. Can’t wait to see this, hope it’s great. If not, I’ll watch the original again sometime anyway right before the world doesn’t end.
