EXCLUSIVE: Disney is trying to fit the glass slipper on Mark Romanek. The studio is circling Romanek, the accomplished video director and helmer of the features Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo, to steer a new version of Cinderella, based on the pitch that The Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna sold to Disney last year in a seven-figure deal.
The studio bought that project after its billion-dollar grossing 3D Alice in Wonderland opened the floodgates on movies based on public domain fairy tales. Simon Kinberg is producing, and insiders describe Brosh McKenna’s script as the re-imaging of the classic tale where the prince is set for a politically arranged marriage, until the evil plan is threatened when the prince meets Cinderella. No deal yet, but it’s moving toward one and the picture is a priority for the studio.

The sentence should state: Mark Romanek is desparate to direct Cinderella and is chasing it.
Sounds like “Ever After: A Cinderella Story” redux. And chances are it won’t be nearly as good, what with Romanek and Brosh-McKenna’s past work and all.
How does it sound anything like it when the only thing we know about this movie is that it is some version of the Cinderella story.
Matt C — you’re being sarcastic, right?
Chris, honestly I have no faith in this film. Did you not see the McKenna-written “Morning Glory”, “27 Dresses” and “Laws of Attraction”? And the logline looks like it borrows elements from “Ever After”, particularly the ‘prince in an arranged marriage’ bit.
Romanek is a fantastic director and I’ll watch this based on his participation. Cautiously optimistic for the time being.
I look forward to the report next year that Romanek is leaving the production four weeks before principal photography begins.
wow that was a very original joke.
Aline’s script is fantastic and she is a smart writer and did an incredible job creating the world of the film. It will be an incredible movie if Romanek can bring his strong vision to it. I can’t wait to see this!
Romanek is one of the most under appreciated directors around. He works well with actors, is as visually pure as it gets, and won’t stand for mediocrity, which is why he left Wolfman. He’s an artist, and we should be so lucky to have another film by him. Disney aren’t stupid — they know he’ll elevate the material.
Agreed. Though I’m still really rooting for him.
I like Mark Romanek and hes pretty talented in making a solid movie after another. That said, I honestly don’t think he should do this project because it sounds really lame and not his style. Id rather him focus on other better material than this Disney crap.
It’s too bad he didn’t make Wolverine, as I would much rather see him to that then a Disney film. Then again, he has a good relationship with Apple, so maybe this project could work so long as he has a large amount of creative control.
“Never Let Me Go” was the best movie of 2011.
Definitely one of the best of 2010 and criminally overlooked during awards season.
To me Mark Romanek is visually just a step below Fincher. At the very least it will be tightly done and beautiful to look at as a film if this happens.
Yes, but when you’re directing an Aline Brosh-McKenna shitfest, all bets are off. Hitchcock, Capra and Mankewicz, all back from the grave rolled into one, couldn’t make one of her scripts bearable.
One Hour Photo. ‘Nuff said.
