EXCLUSIVE: After a series of meetings with various veteran comedy showrunners, I hear The Drew Carey Show creator Bruce Helford has emerged as a leading candidate to write Anger Management, the Lionsgate TV-produced TV series starring Charlie Sheen. No final decision has been made and Helford is expected to have at least another meeting with the producers but he is considered a strong choice to create a starring vehicle for Sheen having done the same in the past for Carey with ABC’s The Drew Carey Show and George Lopez with the comedian’s eponymous ABC sitcom. He can also handle the accelerated production schedule required by the Debmar-Mercury model having juggled multiple series at the same time. The Debmar-Mercury template calls for quick amassing of syndicatable number of episodes. After taking a short break to focus on his kids, word is that Helford is looking to return to television full-time. On the show, based on the 2003 Jack Nicholson-Adam Sandler movie Anger Management, Sheen will play an updated version of the Nicholson’s character, a volatile anger management therapist.

Robert Greenblatt should pick the series up for NBC. Imagine what kind of ratings Charlie Sheen would give NBC!
Cue goatee jokes…
Great! Another goatee attached to a white man getting a deal.
It’s not a goatee.
He just grew a moustache on the wrong side of his mouth.
BOOM!
A soul-less patch. …u can do better Brucey
Bruce…you are such a terrific guy. Why would you even consider this job? You are who you associate with and Sheen has made alot of enemies.ALOT! They’ll be yours too. Do you want that baggage.A boozing, drug addicted egotistical pathetic jackass who beats woman… Big mistake.
OH please you don’t know the guy only the image that press and sensational tabloids would give you..Sheen is loved by many of folks from this industry girl..he will be alright and it could a challenging and winning (and no it was not a reference just the appropriate word..lol) situation for Bruce Helford.
Lionsgate and Sheen are looking at TBS or another basic cable outlet, not a network.
Network deal would be 24-26 episodes per season, tops. So Charlie would need to put in 5-6 years of work to get enough episodes to syndication.
TBS (or Comedy Central or USA) deal would be up around 30 episodes per season, meaning 4-5 seasons and out for Sheen.
Good luck Bruce. Get your blood pressure checked now.
TBS? Do you really think a Time Warner Company is going to touch a Charlie Sheen property? WBTV and TBS both fall under the same Time Warner corporate umbrella – no way would they touch this with a ten foot pole.
Plus, Helford made most of his money from WBTV as a pod producer. He’s going to burn a lot of bridges if he accepts this.
Don’t think so for Bruce Helford and the so called ‘burn a lot bridges’ lot’s of showrunners want to work on this project actually..but yeah TBS will not be the network, channel for this new show..
Of all the showrunners in Hollywood, trust me: the most overrated and unfunny is Bruce Helford. Just watch an episode of NIKKI or WANDA!
i don’t disagree but he also did some great work on other shows..so we will see..it is quite a challenge so maybe it will stimulate his creative skills..i hope so..otherwise they could have hired a writer who comes from movies..maybe more capable of originality and creative writing..i am suprised Joe Roth who is a movie producer and Sheen who is a former movie star did not try that..anyway if the writing is good it could be…epic !
Stephanie, its funny that you sit & judge Bruce for even considering in taking a JOB that might make lots of MONEY! And how will he end up making lots of enemies for working with Charlie? Before Charlie’s meltdown, Charlie was the #1 highest paid actor in the #1 tv comedy! Despite Charlie’s problems, he is a very charming & talented actor, & with the right team, can make another #1 top rated show! You Go Charlie!
George Lopez was a complete tyrant (ask any Warner crew members), just one who knew how to control his substances. If Helford was about to keep him in line, a reformed Sheen should be within reach.
Whatever baggage Charlie has with him, it is purely charlie’s. Not bruce’s at all. I don’t know where you get your rationale but I have a mysterious gold mine to sell you based on how you arrive at conclusions. If Bruce does this and makes it great, good for him.
My rationale is completely sound. Do you think Peter Roth or Bruce Rosenblum would ever work with Helford again if he makes this project even remotely successful? If it succeeds, it makes them look the bad guys with Sheen. The majority of Helford’s projects were made at WBTV and they are the top producer of television in this town. Sheen is suing WBTV (along with Chuck Lorre). WBTV certainly isn’t going to be overly friendly to someone who is working with the enemy. I certainly wouldn’t accept the position unless I knew I would never need a WBTV phone call returned.
I heard Charlie’s first choice was Tom Herz, who he worked with at ‘Spin City’, but he can’t do it because he’s on another show.
Bruce is a guy who obviously relishes the challenge of dealing with big, sick egos (Roseanne,Lopez), so Mr. Sheen should be right in his wheelhouse. It’s always perplexed me why a great guy (and now rich guy) like Bruce repeatedly sets himself up for showbiz abuse.
Winner– most sinister smile. Winner– most sinister mustache placed under your lips. WINNING!
how many of us make a crude post not knowing all the details about charlie. how many movie and televesion stars do the same thing but behind closed doors ? think about it charlie was with hookers ,drugs and had a temper in his teens but women wanted to land him and change him. don’t sit there and tell me the women he married or slept with did not know his past they just wanted a piece of him $$$$$ also lorre new all about him to make a series about the real charlie sheen’s life, just a year ago they offered him a large amount of money to stay. why did ashton get that amount of money he did just to join and jon is still way behind money wise. the show will still tank it is just when. ashton has one way of acting it is like he has ADHD or ADD watch that 70′s show and all of his movies.
I’m more of a sports fan than a TV fan, so I offer this analogy: When Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, hired Terrell Owens (TO), fans thought him to be crazy or an idiot. Jerry’s primary reason to hire him was for the publicity and fan-generated revenue TO would bring with him. Secondly, Jerry hired TO for his talents, thinking he may help his team franchise win and succeed. TO failed and was released. Despite the “I told you sos” from his colleagues and critics, Jerry Jones still has his money and his franchise. TO, however, is posting his talents online, looking for someone to hire him. “The rich. You know why they’re so odd? Because they can afford to be.” –Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) referring to another rich guy named, Bruce.
People say Charlie Sheen made a lot of enemies right? He was only speaking his mind about what happened to him. When you have been labled with all kinds of things the least you could is say what you feel is the truth. Whether people accept it is a different matter. I don’t believe that working with Charlie means inheriting his enemies. Wish them well. I still believe that Chalie is a good actor. He just needs to fight and defeat his demons. Everyone’s got theirs.
Listen up all you haters…..Charlie’s rants are simply untreated mental illness, a complicated issue since treatments come with complications and stigma. Do not judge until you have walked a mile in someone’s less-than-comfortable shoes.
Or maybe he was fed up with all this politically correctness fake hollywood BS…and maybe this time he will work with a showrunner who doesn’t mock his PERSONAL demons..
I agree: the showrunner was a loser the ENTIRE way he handled the situation….good point…
