Legendary East To Raise $220.5M Through Hong Kong For Film Studio From China
BREAKING: Ed Zwick will direct The Great Wall, the first project for Legendary East, that Hong Kong-based stand-alone entertainment company that was started by Legendary Entertainment’s Thomas Tull with Asian partners. Zwick and his longtime partner Marshall Herskovitz will write the script based on a story about the mystery behind China’s greatest manmade structure as imagined by Legendary chairman Tull and World War Z author Max Brooks. Based in Hong Kong
with Chinese management and international investors besides Tull, the new company wants to be positioned to produce content that is as commercially viable within China and the rest of the world. The Great Wall will be produced by Legendary’s Tull and Jon Jashni, as well as Atlas Entertainment’s Alex Gartner and Chuck Roven, who is a frequent producer on Legendary/Warner Bros films (currently in production on The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel), and Zwick and Herskovitz. The project will be distributed in China by Legendary East’s co-production partner, Huayi Brothers, while distribution in all other parts of the globe is anticipated to be handled by Warner Bros Pictures, which is Legendary Entertainment’s longtime partner on films.
“Our partnership with Ed and Marshall is indicative of the creative ambition and financial commitment we are bringing to Legendary East — not next year or next month, but today,” said Jashni, Legendary Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer, who also serves as an adviser to the Legendary East team. “Their ability to translate a sense of history while communicating emotion and wonder has been proven repeatedly. The Great Wall exemplifies the type of globally appealing commercial movie we intend to have Legendary East become known for.”

Judging by his previous films, shouldn’t the headline be,
“U.S. BOMBS CHINA” ?
How does Edward Zwick still get work after all of his bombs?
For whom is the reason for the construction of the Great Wall a mystery? The complexity of the deals are far more entertaining than the movies. That’s why Deadline is such an entertaining read.
Well if the Last Samurai is anything to go by, it’ll be about a white guy who single handedly builds the wall and the drives off the Mongols.
For my money, Zwick’s one of the best. Already excited about this.
AMERICANS, SAY ‘HAIL’ TO YOUR NEW CHINESE OVERLORDS!
MWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
Who’s going to see this outside of China?
No one.
Likewise inside of CHina. THe CHinese hate being treated as “stupid” … like they don’t know who built the damn thing … there’s a few thousand of them buried inside the walls used as cement and others used as grout.
Noting the vast majority of the big studios’ portrayal of times during the infamous Japanese Internment camps (Dennis Quaid/Tamilyn Tomita’s “Paradise” flick comes to mind – in addition to the films on the 442nd/100th Japanese battalions during WWII), the revised history might have a white guy that unified China (one of the reasons why The Great Wall was built over time)
Agree
They also hate to be always portrayed as the villains like in Will Smith’s remake of “The Karate Kid” (hmm, isn’t karate associated with Japan – nah, we all look alike)
