EXCLUSIVE: Epix’s retreat from original programming continues with the departure of Laverne McKinnon, EVP original programming and development. Epix — a joint venture of Viacom, Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate — made a statement that it was serious about originals when it hired industry veteran McKinnon, former head of drama development for CBS, 2 years ago to spearhead its efforts in the area. At the time, Epix had already greenlighted its first pilot, Nashville drama Tough Trade, and had several series and miniseries in development. That same fall, McKinnon made the rounds around town, laying out an ambitions scripted agenda for Epix, which included the launch of the channel’s first original scripted offering, likely a miniseries, in third-quarter 2010, followed by a rollout of a scripted program each quarter, alternating between minis and 13-episode series.
Epix continued to aggressively acquire documentaries and concert and comedy specials and became a pioneer in striking an early distribution pact with Netflix for features from the studios that co-own it. But Epix’s original efforts never took flight. And last October the company pulled the plug of Tough Trade, which was to be Epix’s first scripted series. At the time, Epix insisted that it was staying in the series business. Ten months later, no scripted projects have moved beyond development stage, and now I hear McKinnon is leaving. Still, word is that Epix is not releasing the scriptted projects — series and miniseries — it has in development and McKinnon’s team will continue to work on them, at least for the time being. It is uncler if she will be replaced.

Is epix even on directv ? All I know is the dumb channel took movie inventory from showtime
no. they can’t get any carriage deals, especially after the signed into that monster netflix agreement. cash flow positive…but a lot of negatives too. they’re only on dish and cox (and on cox, not even as a pay channel). comcast, directv and time warner have all publicly stated they will never pick this channel up. a good asset…but they blew their wad too early on the netflix deal. poorly managed…but they had to get into the black somehow.
Laverne was over her head and never knew her stuff. I predict we never hear from her again.
Epix? Never heard of it. And I’m pretty sure it’s not on my cable system.
Laverne is an amazing person who just didn’t have a proper opportunity to show us what she could do. And as far as Epix taking movies from Showtime… To hell with movies.
I have never laughed so hard from the comedy specials on Epix. They have taken it to a whole new level. Eddie Izzard, Louis C K, Craig Ferguson… And with Maureen Taran on board sky’s the limit.
Laverne McKinnon has a long history of failing up. Unfortunately, she’ll land at some other network with all of her lightweight fare for more of the same.
Well said.
Laverne has fantastic taste in writers and material. She judges scripts and projects based on the content of each rather than the cover page. She is not afraid to think outside the box. She is a risk-taker, a collaborator, and a person of great integrity. Sad for Epix because no one in the creative community will take them seriously again.
Laverne’s former direct report Maureen Taran, who is in charge of comedy, is the real superstar at Epix. She got Louie CK two of his Emmy nominations and the Craig Ferguson special was hilarious and flawlessly produced. I was at the Montreal Comedy Festival last week and saw her in action. Everyone in the comedy world adores and respects her. She deserves recognition by the top brass and they need to hold onto her for as long as they can because another network will no doubt be courting her soon.
Maureen, find something better to do on your Friday nights than troll comment boards. It’s pretty classless to take credit for things you didn’t do and don’t even know how to do.
No one knows who you are in comedy. Or cable. You bought shows packaged by other people. That’s why you have 2 credits to your name (being mentioned in “special thanks” doesn’t count). From what I hear, you’re good at being a gofer. Go ask Craig Ferguson if he’d like fries with that.
Don’t go looking elsewhere, Epix. You have what you need in Maureen. Give her the reins!
Maureen Taran: please stop writing things that cause me to throw up a little bit in my mouth each time.
If Epix wants to give someone with 5 minutes of production experience the reins, they may as well take all that Netflix money and have a big bonfire by the beach.
Maureen Taran is the comedy suit at Epix. Laverne really didn’t have anything to do with that. EPIX has been doing a great job with the Louie C.K. Emmy nominations. Its a shame that the Epix Kevin Smith show didn’t get nominated for something. It was probably the best thing he’d done in years. I’m a huge fan of the network. I hope that they up Maureen and let her take credit that she deserves.
your info is off. i dont work at epix, but am close enough to know Maureen had nothing to do with Louis CK, Eddie Izzard, Craig Ferguson, Kevin Smith, David Cross or Janeane Garafalo. she got lucky and inherited stuff that Laverne (yea, Laverne) greenlit. so not sure what you mean about the “credit that she deserves”.
if you want proof, go ask their reps and see who they did deals with. Maureen’s name won’t come up. i have nothing against her., just being honest.
