EXCLUSIVE: It’s a sad day for the smart and sassy suburban women on Wisteria Lane and the worldwide audience of approximately 120 million who watch them. We’ve just learned that ABC will announce on Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that this 2011-2012 season will be the last for long-running Desperate Housewives. Key castmembers are starting to be told, and we hear that Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria are shocked and saddened since the ABC Studios series created by Marc Cherry was expected to continue until 2013 after the longtime showrunner had said that he wanted the show to go for 9 seasons. ABC also contracted with the show’s four stars for the next season after lengthy salary negotiations with the quartet this past season. In addition to signing them for this coming season, ABC also got options on them for Season 9. But when this season’s premiere episode is broadcast on Sunday, September 25th,
it will be the first for the series without Cherry at the helm. He stepped down at the end of last season as executive producer/showrunner and is expected to be a consultant on Season 8 while focusing on development of other series. Cherry also was slapped by former castmate Nicolette Sheridan with an embarrassing lawsuit over a purported slap which is still winding its way through the Los Angeles courts. Her claims of battery, wrongful termination, and unlawful retaliation will be argued in front of a jury. Since the provocative and profitable dramedy’s premiere on October 3, 2004, the show has been a hit with viewers and critics alike: a solid Nielsen performer as well as a multiple Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award winner. The series premiere drew 21.6 million viewers and the show’s first season finale attracted over 30 million viewers. Since 2006 and continuing into 2010, it was the most-watched comedy series internationally, with an average viewership of 51.6 million viewers across 68 territories. Moreover, it was the third-highest revenue earning show for 2010, with $2.74 million per half hour.

Is it possible that Good Christian Belles will be Desperate Housewives replacement?
Hey,
ABC has canceled all of my favorite shows. Trust me it has nothing to do with Christianity. Some of us Right wing Christian fanatics really liked Housewives, Brothers and Sisters and All my children. We’ve even written letters to keep them on so whoa……….. on the Christian thing. Christians and their opinions are the last thing that ABC cares about. So thanks for thinking that we have that much influence. LOL!
Uh, Trudy…”Good Christian Belles” is a new TV show coming out this fall on ABC.
Defensive much?
I am roflmbo! too funny!
Trudy you’re so fucking delusional. Do you even know what ‘Good Christian Bitches’is about? ABC just changed the name to ‘Belles’. I just hope you’re just being satirical. EPIC FAIL!
Sam…. Toby Turner FAN!
Desperate Housewives FAN!
Well you have a FAN of your own now too!! ME
lol…’satirical’ I hope so too
oh yeah and ugh…. It is NOT about that same old bible whatever
Isn’t it better for it to go out on top than to decay slowly like all too many series? (See: 2 1/2 Men)
It’s a little late for that now.
Not to mention Marc Cherry’s the most dreaded of all things in Hollywood: a conservative. The show’s always balanced what little politics nicely and I’m yet another Christian who will miss new shows after season 8.
And what does his politics have to do with anything at all. None. As for him being a Conservative, sure, a Hollywood Conservative which most often means a Centrist or at worst a moderately Conservative Democrat.
How can a gay guy be a conservative ?!
I guess you’ve never heard of GOProud, or the Log Cabin Republicans. The Democratic Party has used gays for decades while granting them very little in the way of rights or recognition. There wouldn’t have to be a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act or of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell if the Democratic deity Bill Clinton hadn’t put them into place.
@txvxfx
You’re the idiot. Clinton, wrong as he was, bowed to rightwing pressure for the DADT and “Defense” of marriage act.
As for your precious rightwing gay groups, they’re nothing but closet queens desperately trying to hold on to their cash and inheritances. Pretty much akin to the jewish supporters of the Nazis. They don’t care what happens to anyone else but themselves, even if it means cutting their own throats. That’s the kinds of idiotic trash in your worthless GOP. An Cherry himself can stuff it as he’s a jackass member.
well said
What a dipshit!
housewifes, i am so you are making a hugh mistake. why kill something that is so popular. most watchers would never want it to stop please go 10 years or more but get rid of the women from the other show that got taken og the air to soon ugy betty.a lot of people miss that show also. that actress was bad cm betty and worse on this show.
Trudy’s response is typical of a “Right wing Christian fanatic” (her term): it MUST be all about her, and everyone else is trying to destroy her sacred way of life. Trudy is an idiot.
yes, i so love this Tv series, i have watched it again and again
I agree 100%! We had good shows to watch, that showed good family values. What does G C B show us, how hypocritical so called Christian’s can be.
Brothers & Sisters, showed us how family sticks together, no matter what.
Desperate Housewives, showed us how true friends, support each other, even in the bad times.
G C B, shows us how to break all of the Ten Commandments.!
I think that’s very possible here. GCB will probably slip to Sundays at 9pm and ‘Housewives’ will end at 10pm.
Now, i’ve been a fan since the start and even endured the bad seasons but the show still remains highly entertaining though no longer the smash hit it once was. It’s stil miles better than most other series on tv. I will very much dearly miss ‘Housewives’ as much as i would want it to bow out with it’s head held high.
Given last season’s ratings erosion, i’m not exactly suprised.
Ok dammit am really really sad. Nothing made my day like the stories of Wisteria Lane. oh no!
So agree with you! I too have been a fan from the start, good season, bad season, but the show kept being entertaining and had its own special way of tackling some of the big and small issues that we face every day.
I too will miss it, and will be sad to say goodbye… but right now, I’m really looking forward to this coming season!
I doubt it. Like Desperate Housewives, Christianity becomes less popular with each passing year.
You’re probably right. And look where it’s gotten us. Loads of messed up teens and young adults. More young ones who think they can all be a Kardashian. The opening episode of “Jersey Shore” brought in a record number of viewers. Yup, the demise of Christianity is bringing great things! (I wouldn’t really care except all the dummies being raised are really starting to cost the country. THAT’S why we have such a small number of high earners, no middle class, and a huge number of lower class people who know more about pop culture and less about government than ever before.)
Unfortunately Emily all the high earners i know are atheists and have the best families and kids that i know. Great families unburdened by silly beliefs. On the other hand, i see a lot of “Christian Families” living in poverty and with very messed up kids. But Jesus is going to save them….
Yeah, like the McCourts.
Bryan It’s not like Christians will be punished for believing in God if there isn’t one right so what’s the problem. You saying atheist have the best family and kids really shows how hostile you are towards Christianity but why?If atheist are the highest earners and have the best family and children why does Jesus bother you the way he does if your own belief is that he isn’t real. You sound like your pissed off at him and God for some personal reason that I don’t really care to know.It doesn’t make you feel good enough that atheist have great families and jobs(your opinion) but you mock Christians who are poor that’s sad.I guess like most atheist you get on the computer to mock Christians but if you actually believe what atheist claim to believe why do Christians bother you. What they told you that you were going to hell. But wait you believe there is no God and therefore no hell.Let this be a lesson to any reader of my comment.ATHEIST DO BELIEVE IN GOD.If they didn’t why would people who do it’s not like they’ll be punished for believing in God.ALL ATHEIST ARE ANGRY AT GOD FOR A PERSONAL REASON AND SO THEY CHOOSE TO TURN AWAY FROM HIM JUST LOOK AT THEIR HOSTILITY.They should be the coolest people in the world but they’re not because they do believe in God.That’s why every atheist always criticizes Christians and not any other religion because CHRISTIANS ARE RIGHT.
You tell em Blanche. I am looking forward to the day when christianity gets thrown on the dustpile with all the other previous cults and gods of the past. Its all smoke and mirrors.
If you really believed it was smoke and mirrors why are you telling somebody to stick it to em.If there is no God they won’t be punished for believing because there isn’t one so again why are you so hostile.
Because there is one and your mad at him.
What about DH makes it a Christian series? Bree occasionally going to church and confessng her many foilbles? The only time these characters enter a church is when they do so for personal gain. Come on. Don’t create some fake reason for the series being cancelled.
well that was fast even for them
It’s sad to see ABC dismantle what was a great Sunday night lineup. First, they cancel “Brothers and Sisters”- a great show-then now we learn that “Desperate Housewives” is biting the dust. I would have
no interest in watching” Good Christian Belles” they should have left DH at 9pm and had something a
little racier at 10 pm- no wonder everyone is going to cable- they had a solid Thursday and Sunday night-and blew it!
NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO . THIS CANNOT HAPPEN. THE SERIES CAN’T END BEFORE 10 SEASONS(MINIMUM). I’M IN ABSOLUTE SHOCK. THIS CANNOT, CANNOT, CANNOT BE TRUE !! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO . I WILL DIE
Thank goodness. This show has been in its death rattle for years. Time to pull the plug.
GCB SUCKS..It is abosoutely RETARDED and I’m only watching it cuz it took the place of one of the greatest shows I’ve ever been addicted to and upon recent research, I am wondering IF THAT CUNT WHO PLAYED EDIE, NICOLETTE SHERIDAN, IS RESPONSIBLE for the demise of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, due to her stupid prob with Marc Cherry. It seems that her lawsuit caused him to divert his wonderful skills to other shows and let his HOUSEWIVES die…I always HATED HER and never saw her play a charactor that is “likeable” PROBABLY CUZ SHE IS A SELF CENTERED BITCH IN REAL LIFE…and you can tell she’s the type who has to be the center of attention and always feel like she is #1…why do you think she hooked up with that sissyboy whiner who belt out all those mushy songs….EEEEYUCCCKKKK!!!! I can’t stand her and I WANT MY SHOW BACK…she’s been dead for awhile…GET OVER IT MARC AND FIGHT TO GET OUR SHOW BACK..PLEEEEEASE!!!
Why?
In 2004 the DH was new, now it’s not, and not as interesting, but still entertaining. Why pull the plug now?
Anyone have any ideas?
Money. You can bet the main actresses negotiated very lucrative contractcs. Besides, the series peaked creatively quite some time ago.
If you put a gun to my mother’s head and asked me if Desperate Housewives was still on TV I would’ve said it was cancelled at least 2 years ago.
what if the gun was to your own head?
And what if the gun was really a cucumber?
Don’t be ignorant. Cucumbers can kill!
Shh. Don’t ruin his brilliant legal trickery.
Desperate Housewives came at a good time and made its mark. They should have given Nicolette more to do on the show. She was great as Edie. I don’t know why Marc Cherry hated her. It’s time for it to go. Good Christian Belles seems interesting. They have my attention….
its really not fair. ABC should at least have let it go one more season.
Why did abc negotiate new contracts with these ladies if they were going to end the show? I absolutely love “desperate housewives” & I think they deserve two more years to wrap the show up the right way. Now,this upcoming season is going to feel rushed, because they know they must wrap things up quickly. I feel terrible now,as I can’t believe with all the garbage on television(lots of which gets lower ratings than desperate housewives), they decide to end a show that’s a lot of fun. I NEVER! miss an episode of “desperate housewives”,as I always make sure to keep up with the show. Whatever replaces d.h. will not get sufficient ratings & I, for one WILL NOT be watching its’ replacement. Year after year,”desperate housewives” is one of my favorite programs & I will definitely miss it! I wish eva longoria, marcia cross, felicity hoffmann,& teri hatcher only the very best in the future. Thank you for posting my comments. A very dissappointed,& sad fan.
Why does it need 2 years to wrap up? All they need is one episode, which is what most series are lucky to do. I’m still waiting for the Heroes finale.
lol teri hatcher should be trying to find some new work instead of posting some poorly written desperation. fingers crossed for a lois & clark reboot!
Teri Hatcher waiting for a Lois & Clark reboot? So she could play Lois Lane’s grandmother?
Some fans just doesn’t seem to understand when enough is enough. Desperate Housewives is incredibly lucky to be treated like this. The only important thread that’s left to be wrapped is the one which began in the season 7 finale. One ENTIRE season is more than enough to conclude the show. What about Brothers & Sisters ? Ghost Whisperer ? V ? Popular ? Without a Trace ? Cold Case ? Veronica Mars ? Profiler ? Heroes ? Alias (with a shortened final season, now THAT was rushed) ? And the list could go on forever with lower-profile shows !
As a fan, I understand you want as many episodes of the shows you love as possible, but objectively, after producing its 3 weakest seasons in a row (season 5 being the absolute low), it’s high time to say goodbye. I don’t want it to be remembered as a show which outstayed its welcome and ended with pathetic ratings and no relevance whatsoever.
I hope, after the show ends (speaking of that, am I the only one to think ABC should do a special retrospective like NBC did for Friends ?), Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman will come back soon to grace our screens.
Goodbye, DH, it’s been a memorable journey, I’ll be there until the very last episode.
I watched every episode of Heroes… and was sooo glad when they canceled it, putting me out of my futile weekly hope-loop that it would return to season one heights.
Is Vanessa Williams coming back?
Yes. Hopefully her character will actually have some sort of usefulness aside from being a bi-polar waste, or they will kill her off. Sorry to VW fans, but you gotta admit, they advertized season 7 like she was going to be not only the new Edie, but even better. She turned out to be more boring that Catherine Mayfair post-season 4.
What is ABC thinking? Horrible move.
Not a surprise. Ratings have been on a nose dive and the fact the women get so much more money per episode now, it simply wasn’t cost effective to continue it. A shame. It was great the first season and has had some upticks here and there but the writing (and Felicity Huffman’s performance which is the most grating I’ve ever witnessed) doomed it.
Sad news, although perhaps it was time for it to call it quits, even though the only logical reason to cancel it is because it’s gone on a while. If it makes the third highest revenue in television and it’s still not doing bad, ratings-wise, what’s the point?
ABC had a solid two hours on Sunday and I wouldn’t miss those shows from 9 to 11. But it is time to move on. The writers seem to be reaching for silly plot devices. Now the producers can plan ahead and tie things up like they did on Brothers and Sisters.
This was a wonderful show when it started. It is now just quickly written rubbish.
GOD WHY ME? I LOVE DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES I CANT STAND IT’S GOING TO FINISH!
Why wait? End it now.
Big woop! Yet another crap show that ran about 7 seasons too long.
First, ABC cancelled “All My Children” and “One Life To Live” by replaceing them with a cook show and talk show. Now, they cancel “Desperate Housewives” so that gives an opening for another talk or cook show. PAY ATTENTION, this is not making people want to watch ABC.
Good lord some soap fans are idiots. ABC is not going to put a talk show on at 9 PM on a Sunday. They’re saving General Hospital’s slot for that.
Sorry, kiddos. Not a DH fan. I only watched to see Vanessa Williams, and in season 7, she was treated like a featured extra.
I don’t know the significance of her role in season 8 yet, as it hasn’t aired, but I preferred her as Wilhelmina in “Ugly Betty.” Better lighting, wigs, cast and writing.
I trust that Vanessa Williams will land on her feet with a book coming out and a long-running music career. Maybe she’ll do Broadway or an “Ugly Betty” movie *crossing fingers* The key thing is that she’s back in the spotlight after two hit shows back-to-back, she’s still hot at 48 and not slowing down. So so long Desperate Housewives. I am looking forward to something better for Vanessa.
With you on this…..Williams had it way better on Ugly Betty and I hope she’s in something better.
The problem with Dana Delany and Vanessa’s runs on DH is that for some reason, they couldn’t develop another “type” but instead copied the tone from an existing lead. Katherine was Bree 2.0 and Renee is Gaby 2.0. VW worked her ass off, but the writing was embarrassing.
IAWTP. Somebody give her her own show!
This is not all bad news. Never a fan s thought the most creative thing from the show was its opening title sequence – but eight years in prime time achieving its solid ratings is tremendous. Desperate Housewives was and remains an unqualified success.
now they can go back to eating again and gain some weight
Cooking shows, talk shows, reality programing. It spells low production costs. Scripted serial programing is expensive, especially by season 7, when the cast starts to believe that they really are speacial and deserve much more money.
I should qualify myself. I do not watch the alphabet networks at all, as all of their product is dreck. Having said that, ABC isn’t into art, ABC is into advertising revenue and lower overhead.
Eight seasons is enough. So many shows overstay their welcomes these days. “Desperate Housewives” was great in the day, and can have a great final season, but it was time for it to move on.
glad this trashy show will be history.
Chloe – who are you to call DHW trashy? Maybe you read “trash” into a great TV series but some of us who really enjoyed the crazy antics and never knowing what was going to happen, would never consider it trash. For every season that we have enjoyed this program, we are grateful. Sure not every show was at the top of the mark, but the overall feeling was something we looked forward to and in some cases shared their happiness and sadness. I for one never missed one DHW show and will miss it terribly. I hope the actors are proud of their DHW show and will consider it a privilege for giving us a “gift” of a good Sunday night show. Good luck to the cast and those behind the scenes. We will miss you!
This show ran out of juice when it killed off Edie. The show waisted the talents of Dana Delany and Alfrie Woodard. Marc Cherry should of been replaced after the 3rd season. The charector of “Susan” was had to be the worse. Teri Hatcher is what 50 but she plays the part like a 25 year old. The show won Best Comedy in 2005 but was never nominated again THAT SHOULD TELL YOU something!
People! It was just another soap opera that got more stupid each year!
itsnot just a soap-opera it was different it was all mysterious okay now its a little soap opera but not compeletely.
How dare you (dareisay)! it is more than a soap opera, it has morals and for the others who think this show was trashy or whatever, this show changed my life and I don’t care what anyone says. First of all, this show is very entertaining, and as most shows, yeah they will have a downfall, but you know what, these paid actors/actress are professionals, I mean come on give them some credit. Second the are stories and some of them have a point out of life, like when andrew was thrown out and lived on the streets, he cleaned his act and came back home, lesson learned! That is my whole point this is a show not a soap opera you can learn something new, like learning something new at work, daycare whatever, etc. I had watched the whole entire season, I own all 7 season, get your facts straight and if you got something to say about this show, think again!!! YOU STUPID ASSHOLES!!!!!! THINNK BEFORE YOU WRITE/SPEAK!!!!!
That’s good news. It’s time they start taking the trash out and off of our TV choices.
And replace it with what exactly…more trash??
