EXCLUSIVE: It’s a sad day for the smart and sassy suburban women on Wisteria Lane and the worldwide audience of approximately 120 million who watch them. We’ve just learned that ABC will announce on Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that this 2011-2012 season will be the last for long-running Desperate Housewives. Key castmembers are starting to be told, and we hear that Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria are shocked and saddened since the ABC Studios series created by Marc Cherry was expected to continue until 2013 after the longtime showrunner had said that he wanted the show to go for 9 seasons. ABC also contracted with the show’s four stars for the next season after lengthy salary negotiations with the quartet this past season. In addition to signing them for this coming season, ABC also got options on them for Season 9. But when this season’s premiere episode is broadcast on Sunday, September 25th,
it will be the first for the series without Cherry at the helm. He stepped down at the end of last season as executive producer/showrunner and is expected to be a consultant on Season 8 while focusing on development of other series. Cherry also was slapped by former castmate Nicolette Sheridan with an embarrassing lawsuit over a purported slap which is still winding its way through the Los Angeles courts. Her claims of battery, wrongful termination, and unlawful retaliation will be argued in front of a jury. Since the provocative and profitable dramedy’s premiere on October 3, 2004, the show has been a hit with viewers and critics alike: a solid Nielsen performer as well as a multiple Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award winner. The series premiere drew 21.6 million viewers and the show’s first season finale attracted over 30 million viewers. Since 2006 and continuing into 2010, it was the most-watched comedy series internationally, with an average viewership of 51.6 million viewers across 68 territories. Moreover, it was the third-highest revenue earning show for 2010, with $2.74 million per half hour.

Never saw even one episode and I hope I never have to.
Thank Goodness…. I’ve tried to watch this show with my wife…. and I can’t make it more than 5 minutes before I want to kill myself. This show is crap… has been crap… and always will be crap.
Hey Big La Dude – since your stupid comments about DHW being “crap” and so bad that you couldn’t watch it more than 5 minutes, shows what an ignorant “jackass” you are. And referring to wanting to “kill” yourself just shows how really stupid you are. When is there ever a TV show – good or bad – that warrants the statement of “killing” yourself! Since you couldn’t watch for more than 5 minutes, you apparently didn’t know anything about the show anyway, so shut up and go ahead and “kill” yourself or just change channels! A lot of us like the show, will miss it and jerks like you need to watch the “no brainer” shows instead!!!
Marc Cherry is an ass.The storylines seemed to always include gay/lesbian crap.Note to Cherry/writers,don’t ram this gay shit down our throats, keep it to yourself.
sounds like you changed your channel a long time ago.
you comments exhibit your own insecurities…bet you don’t have many friends too.
you might have a longer, more successful life if you didn’t take things so personally.
just sayin.
Your homophobia is showing
Hilarious Jo! Your constricted uptight anger is so laughable. Take a dose of reality, gay people have straight dookie rammed down our throats every minute of every day. Now, I don’t have anything against straights, my parents are, some of my best friends are, but damn if I can’t get away from y’all on the TV. You couldnt swing a possum in Desperate Housewives without hittin’ a het. Homophobia? Keep it to yourself. You are canceled. Love conquers Hate.
I didn’t know atheism was another name for “Christian haters.”
I love DH, and I’m sorry it’s been cancelled.
About time. This show has jumped the shark a long time ago.
This is one of the only shows I actually like on TV. I can’t stand all the reality CRAP that’s always on. This really sticks ABC…
i agree with the people saying “i’m losing all my shows…”…sad that desperate housewives will go out with such a whimper, because it will compete with sunday night football for the guys….and the good wife on cbs….but, i’m glad that the show will gain a spark from the audience it has and HAD know this is the last season…they could chose to kill of major characters since it’s the last season and all…so it could pick up some needed energy….it’s funny…just as my cable company is loading up my on demand with shows….i will have less and less programming to dvr….lost brothers and sisters….now this…and really…how much longer can grey’s and private practice really last…..the original actor’s contracts are sure to be ending soon….and they just never seem to find actors that are as compelling as the original cast….i really think Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore had it right….5 years for the original DVD SHOW….and 7 for MTM….(but i’m watching her show on dvd…and i have to say…the first season isn’t really that good)…..sorry for the blah blah blah…i will throw in…i work with a woman who said “i gave up on desperate housewives years ago…what a crappy show…”…and then she proceeded to regale me with “witty” anecdotes from the REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK REUNION SHOW…..i’m glad her taste has ascended to such a high level….LOL…..
Now if only we could hear the same announcement for Grey’s Anatomy, a show that really needs to be euthanized.
I’m from Chile I love the show and I’ve watched every episode but Marc Cherry was really stupid when he killed Edie, she was the best character of the show, the favorite housewife instead of that silly, anorexic droppy eye of Susan
SO sad.I am a chinese girl ,I enjoy this for 4 years.Konw this ,I will become desperate housewives.
Bravo has changed so much.
It has become proof that P.B.S. is valuable.
while i enjoyed this show in the beginning, the characters started to get very predictable and boring. teri hatcher’s character was probably the worse. her social ignorance began to wear on my nerves so i stopped watching. she is capable of so much yet this character sucked for her. i think she should try some drama. eva? i think her shelf life is running out and felicity? too hard edged. i am ready for something new in that time slot.
It saddens me that ABC chose to end one of their top 3 scripted shows especially since this is my favorite ABC show. I’m really upset about it, however, I’m kind of happy that they decided to end it rather than cancel it. But if you really want my opinion. DH did not jump the shark. Grey’s Anatomy (which is one of my favorites), NCIS, CSI, and House have all jumped the shark. Grey’s Anatomy was good this season, however, they drug too many storylines out too long this season that it kind of got a little stale. I really wanted DH to go 9 seasons, but I guess the silver lining is that they will go out with a bang this year. Although I’m really upset over this news, I can always watch the dvds over again!
The show has over stayed it’s welcome. This year’s shows have been beyond stupid and the character that Vanessa Williams plays has gone from this elegant, rich woman, to a low life sleeping with anyone who will take her. It’s just stupid now and is going now where. They should leave before next year. It’s already a dead dog.
Sorry, I meant nowhere not now where. But the show is done!
“Desperate Housewives” is still on the air?
I’m so sad and although I am a big fan and never missed an episode I must admit that it was due time. The show increasingly felt more and more forced over the last few years. Every other imaginable disaster/drama/accidental situation happened to the characters (or what remained of their initial versions). The cast always managed to stay above the material, gifted comediennes they are and never failed to make me shed a copule of tears come their dramatic scenes. But all in all I feel 8 seasons are more than enough.
I haven’t missed a show in all 7 seasons and I will be faithful till the end, but I am not surprised. Every possible storyline has been exhausted, they cycled the storylines too quickly. I am sorry the creator and Nicollette Sheridan didn’t get along, but killing off that character was huge mistake. Drea DeMateo and Vanessa Williams were wasted. The last season finale was preposterous. I hope they let the characters I came to know go out on a high note.
Love the show and would even watch it for a 9th season, but quite frankly NO show should be drawn out past 2 max 4 seasons. Just too much time for viewers to invest in any show. They leave with my blessing, as long as we get a good round off to the characters.
DID THEY THINK THIS WAS, EEETERNAL”?
As much as I’ll miss it, I’m a bit glad. It should end on a high note opposed to a very low one.
And, because I can’t help myself, Trudy (the girl who started the whole Christian debate/slam) was poking fun at herself and misunderstood what the first person wrote. There was absolutely no need for those who bashed Christianity to bash it.
It is not smoke and mirrors, it is a salvation for some people. No one here sat here going “Shun the nonbelievers!”
Trudy was simply saying that Christians are normal, everyday people, with faith. They are no different and they like the same things everyone does.
She was NOT trying to make it about herself, she just misread the comment about Christian Belles, or whatever.
Just take a breath. This is an internet column… No one of importance is reading this. There is no need for personal attacks.
Amazing that Marc Cherry does not have another show on TV. Time to for a move to WME or CAA?!
Your very rude all trudy was saying is that right wing or christianity has nothing to do with the decision to end the show and a lot of Christians enjoy the show including myself. I seem to remember one of the constitutional amendments liberals like to throw around is freedom of speech eveyone commenting on here has the right to do so. Just be respectful we’re all American. Right and left.
The issue is money not politics.
