The start-up movie-streaming service Flickme is up and running in beta mode beginning today, kicking off with licenses from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros Digital Distribution. Mitch Galbraith, the former COO of Funny Or Die, is CEO of the venture, which enables users to watch Hollywood films in a social-media environment. The company, started earlier this year by Galbraith and Mark Smallcombe, is funded by Sequoia Capital. At the outset, Flickme members will be able to log in with their existing Facebook accounts, follow people with similar tastes in movies, exchange recommendations and earn badges. A use also can buy or rent select catalog movies and share a discount on that title with up to 10 friends via Facebook and Twitter. Current prices range from $9.99-$17.99 to buy a title or $2.99-$3.99 to rent.

So… Badgeville meets streaming films on Facebook? Even with the initial 1,000 movie title, I’m just not convinced there’s really a strong market there.
This is dead in the water unless they offer an all you can eat model. Nobody wants to pay per movie unless we are talking $1 for back catalog stuff.
I just wish there was some way to make money by betting on this ventures demise.
F*ing morons if they think they can go against netflix with those price points.
I hope for the people involved that this is only a way for certain execs to loot some stupid fund’s money and pay themselves big salaries before the music ends.
re: some stupid fund
They got funding from Sequoia! Shows the VCs are really getting desperate and trying to prolong the inevitable bubble burst.
Won’t work, the great thing about Netflix is the simplicity of the system weather streaming or DVD. One price, simple and clean interface, when will these yahoos learn. Viewers want one or two clicks. Who wants to fool with face book or twitter. Studios and tech companies just don’t get it. Keep it simple.
And what a terrible name and logo. It can’t be an accident that in the chosen font, the letters “l” and “i” almost blur into the letter “u”. Is it supposed to be edgy? Just looks moronic.
I agree w/Chris the $1 per movie is the only way to compete… unless they stream 1st run same time as VOD or offer Packages like “Action Pack” four movies, 4.99…otherwise we might as well stick w/iTunes.
Deadline Hollywood, where we all go to assasinate those who are geniuinely trying new ideas, or trying to succeed. Nice, folks!
