Nobody has found a way to squeeze more cash out of a film franchise than George Lucas has done with Star Wars, and he’s at it again. Here’s a trailer for the release of the six films on Blu-ray. I caught the bug on the original trilogy that was far ahead of its time, but I found the prequel uninteresting compared to films like The Matrix, the first of which was released around the same time as that first prequel. Still, Lucas is serving up 40 hours of extras in these releases. But does anyone other than the hardcore geek really care?

What is wrong with Vader’s lightsaber, it’s pink !
I’m glad they fixed the glitch in Jedi with Luke’s and Vader’s lightsabers crossing.
No.
“But does anyone other than the hardcore geek really care?”
Um… This is the most high-profile Blu-ray release to date.
I don’t care because it includes the prequels. If it was only the original three I’d be drooling for this. And I’m a hardcore geek
There is a version with just the originals.
No there isn’t. there is a version with just the original 3 movies AFTER Lucas has doctored them up, cut and spliced CGI crap in and changed scenes and added lame scenes…..but there is no DVD or Blu-ray version of the ORIGINAL 3 films.
Have fun lining up to pay George even MORE money. The article is right, amazing how much cash he has milked out of the SAME films. It’s amazing there are that many people so gullible, you pay $20 for the movie, then you pay him $25 for the same movie with 3 more minutes added to it, then you pay him $30 for the special edition of the same film with another 2 minutes of scenes, then you pay him $40 for the Blu ray version of the base film because that’s the only way he will release it…again, then you pay him $25 for the blu-ray with the 3 minutes added, then you pay another $30 for the special edition with extra 2 minutes on blu-ray……really? REALLY??? Man, I have some ocean front property in Kansas for you too……suckers.
Yes, but if you look, the original trilogy is only a 3 disc set. You have to get the entire 6 movie saga in order to get the extras.
Lol. Only George.
This hardcore geek doesn’t even care.
But if Lucas would’ve included restorations of the original theatrical release versions of the original trilogy – instead of just the bastardized “Special Edition” nonsense – then I would be very interested indeed.
It’s absolutely abhorrent that he has buried the original versions – not just because Han shot first (and other revisionist sacrilege), but as a basic matter of film preservation, respect for cultural history, and basic principle.
they’re his films so he can do whatever he wants with them, period.
Thanks for posting the obvious… I think John is entitled to his opinion because a lot of comments on Deadline could be replied to with “Well so and so can do whatever he/she wants with whatever.” Thanks Pablo.
“they’re his films so he can do whatever he wants with them, period.”
That comment is ignorant on so many levels that one is at a loss for words.
and we can do whatever we want as consumers by not purchasing this stuff anymore.
His fans have poured billions–billions–into his mythology and his pocket. He could do just a little listening. All we want is the version we saw in ’77. That’s it. The transfer would take a week. Done. See how easy that is?
Lucas will NEVER release restored versions of the originals, because his ex-wife owns a piece of them.
cst makes a extremely important observation here; shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle. Even the least set of “original” movies were available ONLY as extras in a package with the special editions. The Marcia versions will not see the light of day again until GL has sucked every penny out of the ones she doesn’t share ownership in — DVD, Blu-Ray and data chips implanted directly in your brain.
Yeah, this is the little secret no one seems to understand.
He put out the origial unaltered versions on dvd a few years ago, at least in a double disc collection with the special editions. Grant it you had to buy the 2 disc sets and there were no extras included but they were released.
“they’re his films so he can do whatever he wants with them, period.”
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
Here, here Norm.
Whenever anyone resorts to the phrase, “I have a right to do this,” it’s typically a bad idea.
People who claim to have the right to do something rarely ask whether it is also right to do.
and, Pablo, your money is yours so you can (like a schmuck) give Lucas even more of it now. Go on, do it.
Agreed completely, you took the words right out of my mouth.
The original films were released on DVD as a combo along with the Special Edition versions. They were cleaned up so the old skool ILM effects look better.
You can see Han shooting first in all it’s glory. I won’t buy the Blue Ray versions if the original release films aren’t included.
What I’m still waiting for is the release of the long promised Ewoks vs E.T.’s.
Perhaps someday Lucas will let Bioware make this into a film.

As long as it is footage from the production era then George has my dime. If it is retrospective guff with people telling me what I’ve already known for 3 decades, then I swear I will
Burn the goddam ranch down. And if there is so much as one frame of Simon
Pegg’s face on one of those discs, then
George… It’s on!
The Skyalker Ranch is actually a quite lovely place, so I do hope you’ll reconsider.
All kidding aside: Yes. Give us the original versions in Blu-Ray splendor in this set, and not in some Holiday 2014 “But Wait! There’s More!” set. His underwear is already lined with $1000 bills.
Now that is a comment. LOL outstanding.
given how badly he re-edited his ex-wife’s work in the special editions, does anyone but hardcore star nerds care? and I’m sure the versions of the originals are even worse, the man seriously cannot stay away from his own movies
I’d really rather he focus on doing a BETTER 3rd trilogy, set after JEDI, or make that “hard sci-fi” trilogy he intends to make with Shia Le Beouf.
Or get to work on a do-over of the last three movies. I’m sure he could get us to pay for them all over again if he promised they would be GOOD this time.
But this time, George, don’t film the first draft of the script.
It’d be interesting to see what sales would look like if George released the ORIGINAL three on Blu-Ray.
George IS free to do whatever the heck he wants (ask Jar Jar Binks), but I think releasing the untouched originals would be a smart move.
The only Star Wars BluRays I would spend a dime on would the 3 originals in their original release versions. Anything else would not be acceptable.
Love how the writers always throw out their opinions on the films or shows they write about. Who cares if you thought the Matrix was more interesting. Just give us the facts, dude.
Visit a different website, dude.
If Greedo shoots first, I’m NOT buying it!
I never forgave Lucas for that.
Actually, I’m hoping that this definitive release will include about 47 deleted scenes that show Han Solo shooting EVERYONE first.
In five years, they’ll just do the super extra mega special edition and re-release all this again with another 100 hours of extra footage.
how many years can we rehash the same old movies?
count this geek out. If i’m really that desperate i can watch it on basic cable.
Mike, save the crotchety behavior for Nikki. And you aren’t Devin Faraci so no need to be a douche as well. A lot of people care, this is a HUGE catalog title for the format and there’s goodwill from fans, young and old. You may not have liked the prequel trilogy but it’s aged fairly well compared to the Matrix which only had one good film and that was competing against only one prequel and their later contests… well, whatever you may think of Episode II & III, which it’s obvious you’re pandering to internet fanboys and their ignorance, they were light years ahead the Matrix sequels. If those two films had any good will as all six SW features, the Wachowski Siblings would be milking those features dry. But they dried up by the third abominable release.
Hey Wally Q, you didn’t like the second Matrix movie, I thought it was a masterpiece. I’m curious, what didn’t you like? Do tell, do tell!
The second Matrix was so bad I refused to see the third.
There was only one good Star Wars. The first. The second blew it at the end, and the rest are shit.
I disagree with that. The first and second were good, but Lucas fucked up the third with the Ewoks… it’s all been down hill from there.
That is the truth!
Yeah, Mike. For God’s sake, if you’re slamming the SW prequels, yet openly admit you liked the abortions that were Matrix 2 and 3, you automatically void anything you have to say about Star Wars.
Do you really believe it is actually George Lucas who comes up with plans to release and re-release the films? The guy just recently agreed to donate half his wealth upon his passing. He donated 200 million to USC. You can shit on his creative decisions but you are a fool if you think he is sitting around thinking how to milk more money out of the SW films. He signs off on the plans I’ll admit. Still, in a shorter amount of time, the Lord of the Ring movies have been re-released more often. Look it up! Morans.
morans?
Leave Erin Moran (Joanie from Happy Days) alone!!
Very good points, thank you!!!
“”He donated 200 million to USC. “”
crud– so he single handily guaranteed us 4 more generations of dictator/directors who think that because they went to USC that they float on water and land in full god like hover mode all day and night akkkk
can’t stand-em now in the biz now he with a single donation will flood us common crews with idiots who did not earn their stripes
if only he put in some money to a school that trains us regular guys UCLA does a bit but only say 10% and i only say this as you have to remember that “WE” outnumber the dictator/directors by 1000 to 1 there seems to be only one I have ever worked for who does not think he is the god of the set Ron Howard –he actually asks his crew to speak up and input on the film as he recognized we together have 100′s of years of films under our collective belts!!!
I cannot WAIT to download this on bittorrent!
Hahahaha I was thinking the same thing….
I can’t stand the double standard that people have towards Lucas. He’s releasing arguably the most famous trilogy on the most current and best home video tech for those who want it. And he’s loaded the set with a ton of special features, and in two different volumes for those who don’t want to buy the prequels.
LOTR is already on the their second Blu-ray release (After 3 DVD releases, while Star Wars only had 2) and they still haven’t got it perfect. With the Hobbit, we all know there will be more.
“But does anyone other than the hardcore geek really care?”
Basically 90% of Blu-ray buyers care. We love Blu-ray because we can experience our favorite films in near theater quality.
Not too long ago I went to the Star Wars: In Concert show. You know what I saw? Thousands of kids dressed as Jedi’s, couples, disabled people, and any other type of person you can think of. They all had common bond. They all loved Star Wars.
It’s just very odd to me how people criticize someone when they’re product is merely bringing joy to others. Don’t get me wrong, money has a lot to do with these things. It’s the driving factor. But do you think those who enjoy it care? This isn’t the Saw or Final Destination franchise. Star Wars is 35 years old. There’s a reason it’s just as big as it ever was. Don’t get me wrong, I would love the unaltered originals on Blu-ray, but they’re still great films as is. Models isn’t what made those films great.
BTW, the Matrix comparison wasn’t the best. Remember those sequels…
If anyone wants to know just how much George Lucas hates his fans, just look at the picture of Jake Lloyd on the cover of this box set. That is the ultimate F**K You from George Lucas.
Hollywood needs a mandatory retirement age–for people and products.
Wake me up when he releases a 7th film set AFTER Return of the Jedi that includes, at a minimum, Mark Hamill as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Hamill would really fit the role…not sure we’d care to see an aging Han Solo though. Just do NOT cast Shia Le Beouf in the film…he already ruined Indiana Jones’ return to the big screen. I can see it now…Le Beouf cast as Han and Leia’s hot headed son with a chip on his shoulder (vomit).
So you’d rather see fat and out of shape Mark Hamill swinging around a lightsaber, rather than Harrison Ford who is still in the same shape he was in 20 years ago? Kay…
I think you mean “chimp on his shoulder” ala Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Enough with the DVD rehash, is Harrison Ford to old (or grumpy?) to do motion capture? You know, something that looks a little bit better than Jeff Bridges looked in the Tron remake? Cause I’d love to see a Han & Chewie story much like the one from the Christmas special.
It’s called Blu-Ray and this is the first time Star Wars has been released on the format.
I truly believe Warner Bros did the same with the Harry Potter films i’m sure there are many scenes for each movie we have never seen.
Just wait for a few more months until the 3D versions come out.
I am so glad that I saved my original triology on VHS.
Who cares about it anymore. As somebody who grew up after the originals, I find the whole thing overblown. And the complaining about the prequels sounds like nonsense to me. Heck, they at least had better CGI than the hokey originals. If George Lukas wants to grab a quick dime by targeting the core audience yet again then good luck with that.
I have a feeling the condescension would be far less if this was, say, The Godfather Blu-Ray with 40 hours of bonus material. And yet is there a more seminal worldwide franchise than Star Wars? Can you honestly argue that the name Vito Corleone is better known than Darth Vader? Wise up, Deadline — these are classic Films with a capital F, not geek porn.
I’ll try to stomach George Lucas “squeezing more cash out of a film franchise” while wading through the films on this list:
http://www.imdb.com/list/WUNCarSomaM/
And yes the internet desperately needs more people saying what they think of the prequels to justify a Star Wars story of any kind.
The home video industry should be on its knees thanking George Lucas for largely creating the market for extras and behind the scenes material (at least those anyone wants to see) and for raising film presentation standards and production techniques pretty much nonstop for 35 years. This is and will be the biggest catalog release for the format to date.
