UPDATE, 8:10 PM:
Scotland Yard has blocked the release of the names of several News of the World journalists who ordered a private detective to hack into mobile phones belonging to six public figures. The agency declined comment today but has in the past prevented the release of facts surrounding the case on the grounds its investigation would be compromised. The names could show how widespread the practice was at the paper, which was closed down by Rupert Murdoch last month.
PREVIOUS, 3:54 PM: While Rupert Murdoch and his son James await a likely summons to the UK High Court to answer more questions under oath about News Corp’s involvement in the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, there is a report today that lawyers for News Corp arm News International are looking into reporting practices, financial records and emails at their UK newspapers — specifically to see whether there’s anything there that could be construed as violations of the U.S.’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Meanwhile, the inquiry at the Royal Courts of Justice that would include questions to Rupert and James Murdoch could get underway by October. Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians also could be called. A UK Telegraph report said letter already have been sent to potential witnesses, who also could include former News International CEO Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, both former NOTW editors.
The revelations come amid an FBI-led probe in the U.S. that seeks to find out whether some of the illegal practices used at the now-defunct News of the World — namely hacking phones of the families of London bombing victims and murdered children — could have happened here to the families of 9/11 victims. The Murdochs are attempting to uncover publicly the extent of the phone-hacking as at least one U.S.-based analyst has downgraded News Corp stock while Wall Street questions what exactly to make of the company, which consistently beats earnings estimates but has taken a severe PR hit with the scandal that already has cost News Corp its bid to buy UK giant BSkyB.

Good.
I think saying “The Murdochs are attempting to uncover publicly” is an amusingly pleasant euphemism, considering their former lawyers, who also represent the Queen, essentially outed them as having lied to Parliament.
Better.
(Best would be an indictment.)
Sad to see his achievement getting trashed this way.
One of the last true media tycoons, leaving only Redstone and Berlusconi.
Murdoch is a tycoon – and a shit, and a cruel one at that. Read his bio, read his history. And as for Berlusconi, he’s known world-wide for his out-in-the-open conflicts of interest, interference, and, at least outside of Italy: corruption.
Sad? No. This is a WONDERFUL scandal… anything that makes the Murdochs sweat is a great day for the rest of us. And if it knocks ‘em back to where they were 30 years ago, you’ll hear champagne corks popping – ALL OVER THE WORLD.
Speaking of getting the Murdochs to testify under oath… not that it matters with all the lies they’ve told. But with the upcoming tenth anniversary of 9/11 and other conveniently and timely so-called terrorist and political events. Including everything from the 7/7 bombings, Iraq,Libya, to political assassinations and massive bank fraud. It would be a service to humanity itself, if the Murdoch crime family was brought to account for its complicity in promoting the cover-up of such monsterous crimes and from profiting from all the misery, the death and destruction they continue to cause.
Not that the blood stained, filthy rich Murdochs are alone in all this, as the mass media can only exist by doing the bidding of the Anglo-American establishment. But one can dream that the Murdochs can be front-page news themselves one day soon -and shown to be the arch criminals and worthless human beings that they really are!
Seat a Royal Commission.
Wasn’t Piers Morgan the former editor of News Of The World?
The FBI investigation is concerned with whether or not the phones of the 9/11 victims were hacked into by individuals in the employ of News Corp. Knowing what we do about this corporation the discovery of such a practice will come as no surprise. However, there is a blatant and well known violation committed by a subsidiary of News Corp. This violation occurred when a advertising agency owned by News Corp hacked into the computor system of a competitor in order to steal trade secrets of the victim company. Why we do not hear of the FBI’s efforts in this situation is rather disturbing particularly when the full story of this matter has appeared in print numerous times and as a result of their actions News Corp lost a thirty million dollar judgement.
