EXCLUSIVE: Feature executive Michael Ellenberg has joined HBO as SVP, HBO Entertainment. He will run the pay cable network’s drama department, reporting to HBO Entertainment president Sue Naegle and working closely with Gina Balian, also a newly minted SVP, HBO Entertainment. Balian, who has been at HBO for 10 years, is one of several drama executives who have recently been promoted, along with Francesca Orsi and David Levine, both of them upped to VP. The reorganization of HBO’s drama department was precipitated by the recent departure of VP Jocelyn Diaz. But instead of going for a direct replacement,
HBO brass opted to bring in somebody senior to lead the drama department. As for going with a film vs. network executive, I hear the decision stemmed from HBO’s positioning as being in between TV and film and the need to have someone on board who knows well the players in the feature world as so many filmmakers are doing series for HBO these days, including Boardwalk Empire‘s Martin Scorsese, Luck‘s Michael Mann and Game of Thrones‘ David Benioff. Additionally, HBO’s development model is closer to features than to the traditional broadcast cycle.
Ellenberg spent the last four years at Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free Prods as SVP. He just finished production of the Ridley Scott-directed Prometheus. He also worked on the company’s films Robin Hood and Cyrus, as well as such projects in development as The Passage with director Matt Reeves, Child 44 written by Richard Price, Shadow Divers with director Robert Schwentke, Red Riding and Forever War. Before Scott Free, Ellenberg spent three years at Scott Rudin Prods in Los Angeles as VP. Coincidentally, Rudin is a major series player at HBO where he has a deal and several projects in the works, including Aaron Sorkin’s drama pilot More As This Story Develops. Drama is having a resurgence at HBO, with both of the network’s new series, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, landing best drama Emmy nominations.

Ugh! Ellenberg is NOTORIOUS for not returning phone calls. So essentially Gina is going to be doing all the work. Thank Goodness they have been lucky enough to hold on to her. She is a wonderful, responsive exec with great taste and a pleasure to deal with.
Ellenberg is one of the smartest execs in town, and HBO’s lucky to snag him. Great move for the drama dept – sure we’ll see great things coming with him at the helm.
Ellenberg returns all MY calls! (He’s a good guy–great hire for HBO!)
Har!
Good, HBO needs to new spark to the hour side.
Couldn’t be a better choice as head of drama at HBO – Ellenberg has amazing taste and relationships with talent. Haven’t had the phone call problem…
Awesome. Good move HBO! Such a smart and intelligent guy. He is NOTORIOUS for having great taste.
Looks like more people get their call returned than you, Ugh. Maybe he’s just not that into you.
Congrats to Gina, Francesca, David and Kathleen. Such an amazing team.
nice shake-up, aggressive move.
This is the perfect match. Michael is brilliant, hard working and has exceptional taste. Terrific hire for HBO. He also has no time for idiocy, which explains why he may appear to be elusive for those of you who can’t get him on the phone.
Great get for HBO! I look forward to seeing what kind of new projects we see under Ellenberg’s direction. Wth Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire killing it this past year, HBO Drama is really on the right track.
The lede being buried here is David Levine. He was one of the best hires that Sue made from the get-go — he had long been one of the smartest and most collaborative executives around, but with a low profile due to working at production companies rather than on the network or studio track. (See his very hands-on involvement in the development of Burn Notice when at Fuse.)
Very happy he’s being promoted. Good work, Michael and Sue.
Ellenberg is smart and what a cavalier move, my friend. Good for everyone involved.
Ellenberg is a brilliant man. Perfect match! – Heather York.
Congrads to Gina, David and Francesca. But don’t forget about Kathleen McCaffrey. She’s the best.
Ellenberg is one of the smartest guys in town. What a great hire!
Jocelyn Diaz had the right idea!
Oh, please. Nothing wil nhelp Sue. Ask most relevant people and they’ll tell you no one wants to work at HBO anymore. She’s unbearable, the wait is impossible, and the taste level is that of a former comedy agent.
sounds like somebody got a pass…
oh, did she pass on your bad idea? that must really hurt. Don’t be spiteful. Sue’s doing an amazing job. She respects her writers and supports their vision. She could not be more collaborative. Ask the people she actually works with and obviously her co-workers which is what this piece is about. She’s the best, people want to work with her.
Can Michael Ellenberg get Ridley Scott to bring a sci-fi project to HBO? That’d be awesome!
Preacher!
Levine should have gotten the nod. Who are all you kiss asses out there? Ellenberg’s an idiot. What are his accomplishments? None in either film or television. He’s been a glorified D-boy his whole career. Way to go HBO!
How comes their movies, series like Treme and comedies are so boring now? Is there a reason for that? Does it have to do with Michael Lombardo and Richard Plepler? Why is Hung so terrible?
Are Michael Lombardo and Richard Plepler bad programmers? Do they give bad notes? The only good dramas they have are Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones.
You forgot Arli$$.
If he likes to give notes, he should go elsewhere.
Michael is an excellent executive, a passionate producer, and, most importantly, a good human being all around. HBO’s gain is Scott Free (and Fox’s!) loss…
Had the pleasure to work with Levine and he is so smart it hurts.
So nice to see a brilliant guy who is passionate about story get pushed further up the ladder.
Levine is a real writer’s exec. kudos!
