EXCLUSIVE: Heather Graham has been tapped to star opposite Rob Corddry in Fox’s comedy pilot Little In Common. Rob Thomas’ single-camera comedy, produced by WBTV, centers on the Wellers (Corddry, Graham), who move from California to Texas but find that their adjustment won’t be quite that easy considering their Latina single-mother neighbor (Alana Ubach) has a radically different approach to child-rearing than they do, while their other new neighborhood acquaintances, the African American Burlesons (Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union), take sports very seriously. Graham’s role, which has been recast, was played by Paula Marshall in the original pilot, in which Ubach had a husband played by Lombardo Boyar. This is a rare series gig for Graham, who has been focused primarily on features. She previously toplined the short-lived ABC comedy Emily’s Reasons Why Not and recurred on Scrubs.
Little In Common garnered solid buzz during pilot screenings. It didn’t snag a series order in May, but the network ordered a new retooled pilot (some of the kids roles also have been recast) in consideration for Fox’s two-hour midseason Tuesday comedy block. With its pending 13-episode order, canceled comedy Breaking In seems a lock for a spot in the block alongside returning comedy Raising Hope, which has a full-season 22-episode order. Other contenders include upcoming freshmen New Girl and I Hate My Teenage Daughter, which will have to earn back-nine orders. Style-wise, Breaking In, Raising Hope, New Girl and Little In Common are all single-camera, while I Hate My Teenage Daughter is multicamera. Graham, repped by Gresh and the Schiff Co, is filming Heartland opposite Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron and recently wrapped Cherry opposite James Franco.

I hope this plays out better than the description. The fish-out-of-water story could be filled with broad and culturally demeaning stereotypes – Latinos, African-Americans, vapid Californians dealing with hokey southerners, you name it. Please avoid adding the smart Asian kid, the spunky disabled friend, the horny divorced single mom, or other tired two-dimensional characters to the mix.
Having said that, this could actually be a cool show if the writing allows characters to develop into believable individuals. In fact, playing against type would be preferrable.
Wait a minute. This is FOX we’re talking about. What are the chances that Rupert’s American network will take the high road?
The description makes me worry about stereotypes, but this is Rob Thomas, so I have faith.
Ugh…. the new 90210 is nothing to be proud of.
Can we stop trying to make Rob Thomas happen?
Hey Logan – Stop trying to make Rob Thomas happen? He already has happened. Believe he created two critically acclaimed shows in Veronica Mars and Party Down. Co-created the new 90210 as well. Don’t think anyone has to try and make him happen.
Here is hoping your new Work It spec will help you happen Logan.
Well done. 10 dollars Logan is a WME guy, a little bitter because RT was part of the great WME exodus. Veronica Mars and Party Down makes me a fan for life. RT being a good boss to his writing staffs makes me like him even more.
No. No, we can’t. Because he’s awesome.
Go Rollergirl!
She never take my skates off. It’s in her contract.
Well played.
So excited for this one!
Lombardo Boyar’s gone.
Canceled
I think Alanna is very funny, but SHE’S NOT LATIN!! it was dumb in MEET THE FOCKERS and dumb now
Uh Alanna is half Mexican and half Puerto Rican, I think that makes her Latina. She just has not done many Latin roles. She rocks!!!!
She is actually Latina. Her real last name is Gonzalez.
She’s too dry for this role- would have been better played by someone a bit mousey like Marshall- so many problems in casting usually makes for early cancellation – Sons of Tucson anyone?
Rob Thomas is great, so is most of the cast. Conceptually, not sure if it will play. I’m happy that Alana Ubach is getting her shot.
Rob Thomas and Dan Etheridge are incredibly talented and incredibly nice guys. Among the smartest in this business. It’s never easy to have to recast a show and I’m sure they’re sorry to see the original actors exit. But good things are to come with the new pilot! Congrats!
a 30 minute comedy on Fox? Expect to see the complete series fit on a single DVD.
Is it just me or does this sound an awful lot like Good Christian Belles?
It’s just you. They are only similar in the fact that they involve families. And that there are humans playing the majority of the roles.
Paula Marshall is a show killer. She’s done numerous series and pilots and they always bomb. No surprise they recast. Hopefully it’s a hit because Heather Graham (who seems nice which is a step up from most celebs) could do with one.
It’s been a while since I saw Heather Graham in a major motion picture films or a television show. I really hope this pilot take off put Heather Graham back on the television medium. I think Heather Graham is a good actress but she always attached to a d.o.a. and quite sub par television projects and movie projects. I really hope this pilot will be pick up for a series order.
Heather Graham is so HOT! I hope she does more movies because she’s a great actor who is under appreciated. She should get a Great Publicists who can really show the public her true value: beauty, charm, sexiness, vulnerability, sense of humor, friendliness, and quirkiness – she can play quirky characters that a lot of actresses cannot play. On top of all that she has an air of simple, humble, and fresh personality that is easy to understand because she’s not stuck-up for a hottie – like she’s your best friend & dream date at the same time. Her role in “The Hangover” was small but she was willing to do it like she has no problem with it – I can’t imagine other Actresses with her celerity status doing that – she’s so cool. I could go on and on about her, lol.
i remember watching heather graham in “drugstore cowboy” in 1988. wow, that was a long time ago.
oh i loved that movie so much..a Gus Van Sant movie if i remember well..with an handsome Matt Dillon..good times and i was very little but this movie fascinated me.
Anyway i hope it will be a success Rob Thomas can be a genius for writing (Veronica Mars deserved more and more and more seasons..) and maybe he will give a role to Jason Dohring (miss him on my screen, he should be a movie star by the way he has the same star power as a Ryan Gosling imo) it is a shame his shows are always cancelled too soon and his talent deserves better.
