Movie companies lately have been coming up with out-of-the-box ways to spread the word on their movies, like the promo that Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman made for The Change-Up, or the musical that Final Destination 5 star Miles Fisher made to promote this Friday’s opening. Rarely do these viral efforts feature the head of a studio. But Paul Rudd got Harvey Weinstein to take part in a Funnyordie.com bit in which the actor subjects Weinsein to the worst marketing ideas ever to sell the film that Weinstein acquired in Sundance. While Weinstein was said to have been an inspiration for Tom Cruise’s manic Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder, the real Harvey actually seems a pretty calm screen presence.

This was awful. Very, very, truly awful. Harvey had the right instinct to NOT act prior to this moment. Sadly, he did not listen to his inner Harvey. Truly awful.
Harvey was awesome in this. What makes this awful is that in every single Funny or Die-style viral video that surfaces, the comedy is not there.
I don’t care how funny or respected Paul Rudd is (for good reason), in order for us to laugh, we have to believe that he’s really serious about this stuff. What makes the Office funny is that you believe Steve Carrell’s character is incompetent, or has the views he has. What makes Seinfeld funny is that George is a real character with real situations. All of this b.s. comedy by the 30-40 year-old’s, it’s all absurd stuff that is neither absurd enough nor funny enough. It might make a ten-year-old laugh, but there are no teenagers or adults who think this stuff is any good.
Why does this matter? Because all of these movies are interchangeable, and we see these same actors on screen 5x a year. It’s what someone brought up about the Batemans and Reynolds (who I like, a lot) — stop appearing in so many damn movies, and mediocre ones at that. It dilutes your brand.
There is nothing about this script or movie that has any real jokes of substance. Any moments of substance. It’s just someone wanting to make a movie just to make one.
spot-on comments by “uh”!
Wow — that’s not funny AT ALL!
First thing that occurred to me as I watched? They’re not even in the same room! Whatta fail.
First funny thing Harvey has been involved with in the history of Weinstein/Miramax/dimension
Sure looks like prune face took a shit load of takes…he should cast his brother next time…now that’s where the real talent is!
Paul Rudd is so darn likable and charming- you can’t hate this dude. Even though Paul is talented, I wish Rudd would try different characters, explore more of his artistry , and take more film risks. He is extremely safe with his movie career.
I turned it off half way through. Not funny.
Holy shit, that was terrible. They definitely weren’t in the same room.
Was that supposed to be funny? I haven’t heard of the movie, but if the people behind it thought this was funny, then I’ve got to pass
THAT SUCKED. FUNNY OR DIE? That was the death of comedy alright. Why put this crap on?
“While Weinstein was said to have been an inspiration for Tom Cruise’s manic Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder, the real Harvey actually seems a pretty calm screen presence.”
Apparently he’s a(n insecure) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He’s ripe for self-parody.
Harvey should get nominated for a best supporting Oscar for his performance.
Do you know how much prozac he had leading into this shoot? It was an amount that would down a great white shark, charging rhino or stampeding elephant.
Okay…and, there was some valium thrown in for good measure to keep Harvey unaware that this was NOT FUNNY!
What is this, CSI A/V? So they’re not in the same room — so what? Harvey is a studio head in NY and Rudd is shooting a movie in LA. They’re supposed to fly cross country to shoot a video promo? They do this in movies all the time. It’s called editing.
MoneyMike:
Yeah, editing is supposed to create a seamless scene. Weinstein and Rudd don’t even look like they’re having the same conversation. And how ’bout not do a shit video promo altogether?
LAME.
So unfunny.
Love the line about marketing in the video. Maybe Harvey should call them and tell them this video was a shitty idea!
“If it bends, it’s funny. If It breaks, it’s not funny.” – Alan Alda, “Crimes and Misdemeanors”
This video broke 1:30 in.
It’s a “fake” trailer so mission accomplished.
I miss Steve Guttenberg.
you guys sound like a bunch of old bitter persons .. this shit was hilarious !! if you didn’t find it funny something is seriously WRONG with yall .. SMH …
You people are ridiculous. It’s a viral video that they probably did in about an hour, it’s not supposed to be stellar. Get over yourselves. If you think it’s THAT bad, stop commenting on this crap and get back to work…
Hillarious. loved it.
LOL.
Harvey should campaign for a new Academy Award category for Best Actor, Viral Video.
It would be nice if they had both been in the same room together.
Pretty bad, and WAY too long. It’s got the DIE part right, in FunnyOrDie.com. This bit died.
Thing is, many trailers on television these days are also really really bad. They all look like they’ve been done by the same trailer house. They are usually lettter-boxed, but with the title above or below the letter-box. (So it’s not really letter-boxed then, is it?).
Production values are bad, edits, soundtrack, voice over – their all really amateurish. Someone needs to step in an oversee this, because they ain’t getting me interested in any of the films they are hawking. Makes them all look cheap.
All the working stars shove their way onto Funny or Die ….they have the advantage of other stars, expensive camera’s, lighting guys….the only thing most of them don’t have is funny material. What a waste of time.
Could’ve been about 50% funnier if Rudd was sharper at improv and know how to really land a punchline, but he’s only successful half the time.
And it’s about a minute too long.
Harvey was decent in this. All he had to do was look serious.
An overall fail.
