Fox and New Regency put up a trailer this weekend for In Time, the Andrew Niccol-directed futuristic science fiction thriller that takes place in a world where people who want to live beyond 25 have to purchase time. The protagonist’s clock is about to run out when a rich guy tired of living gives away his time. Niccol used a similar plot driver in his 1997 directorial debut Gattaca, where Ethan Hawke got the chance to escape his dreary home planet and got a shot at space travel despite inferior genetics when an elite athlete (Jude Law) whose body is ruined gives him his ticket off the planet. It worked well in that movie, and In Time gives Justin Timberlake an opportunity to move from romantic comedies to action terrain in a movie career that so far has been a pleasant surprise. Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde and Cillian Murphy also star in a film that opens Oct. 28.

pretty f’n cool concept! must of been fun casting this.
Wow…so in the future, there are no blacks, latinos, or asians just WASP’s. Ooookay. Looks too vanilla for me. I pass.
There are black people in the movie
There were black people in GATTACA, too. Taye Diggs for one. Has BondGirl somehow seen In Time before the rest of us?
As for the flick, it’s all great except for Timberlake. I hate that guy.
Yes, there appears to be ONE black male and ONE black female in this movie, neither roles played by recognizable, young black actors (yes, they do exist). As BondGirl accurately stated, the preview shows no other people of color. How can the viewer come to any other conclusion than that the future depicted in this movie is overwhelmingly white with a couple of token people of color? Odd considering people of color are the majority on the planet.
For that reason and that I’m not impressed with the cast, I’ll pass on this one.
Everyone is oh so pretty and white, but from the trailer, it looks great. Much eye candy in this one with Justin T and Matthew B from White Collar on USA.
I think this will do pretty well.
Niccol is so heavy handed with his material it puts me off all his films. The word ‘subtle’ does not exist in his vocabulary.
Cillian Murphy is an acting god who can do anything. I’ll probably watch the film for him alone. The basic concept sounds like it was lifted from an old Harlan Ellison short story, “Repent, Harlequin, said the TickTock Man.”
“Cillian Murphy is an acting god who can do anything”….and that may be a problem for this movie.
Timberlake has shown some comedic chops but to carry a movie like this as the lead? I haven’t seen any evidence yet. A longer version of his scene with Matt Bomer was shown at Comic Con and he was painfully outmatched by Bomer. I can’t imagine he’ll fair any better playing against Murphy. We’ll see…
Ella…that completely makes sense. Timberlake could well be blown off the screen.
Cilian Murphy is vastly over-rated, in my opinion, and I don’t know quite what to make of Justin Timberlake. But I just finished watching the trailer, and uber-hottie Olivia Wilde has a few minutes here, I’ll be watching this movie for THAT. As for the storyline, which should make the movie regardless of who is acting in it, I think it’s a ghey lame rip-off of Logan’s Run, with obvious class overtones that will play well in today’s struggling economic times. THAT is the kernel of this movie, in that it highlights the difference between the haves and the have-nots, and how America has become a country where, no matter how hard you work, you never get ahead, you just keep slipping backward (as highlighted in the trailer). John V. Karavitis
Murphy is an excellent actor. Unfortunately, he has a tendency to distance himself (or to look disconnected from his surroundings), and here he looks like he’s bored or sleepwalking. Or sleepRUNNING. (A couple of weeks in the California sun, likely in the middle of an Irish or English winter, away from the kids and missus? Working with yet another “in [so-and-so] we [blindly] trust” director? “I’ll take it!” he chirped.) Look, another “genius” script that boils down to people chasing each other around shooting at each other. If that’s what sci-fi means these days, I’ll take the chemistry of Emily Blunt and Matt Damon in “The Adjustment Bureau” over that of Justin “God-Why-Won’t-My-Voice-Change?” Timberlake and Amanda “The-Shocked-Owl” Seyfried in this bland-looking mess.
Only problem is: the script doesn’t make any sense.
I don’t want to be spoiler guy so I’ll just say that the way the time is dished out is a bit absurd and the science behind this is as soft as it gets. I expect more from Niccol as I’m usually a fan of his work.
At least this is better than The Host.
Looks kinda like a cross between “Logan’s Run” and “Altered Carbon.” BTW, will the latter ever get out of dev hell? What an amazing book…
It’s very similar to Logan’s Run in basic concept – in fact at first I thought this was the Logan’s Run remake and they just changed the title. I’m not seeing a ton of Altered Carbon in this, other than it’s set far in the future where rich people get to do whatever they want. But that’s pretty much implicit in every dystopian Brave-New-World kind of story.
GATTACA is one of my favorite films – he really captured the right atmosphere and mood with the futuristic story in that one.
However, this trailer is very underwhelming. Props to Timberlake for doing more interesting work and working with a good director though.
Gattaca is a fantastic movie and one of the most underrated films in the past 20 years. This movie looks interesting, although I do agree with commenters on this board regarding 1) lack of diversity and 2) expectations that there will be some headscratching moments with the whole time swap concept.
While I’m giving this movie a shot, I’ll do so in spite of the fact that I find Justin Timberlake really annoying in movies. I enjoy his music and his stints on SNL, but I just don’t buy him as a leading man. I keep expecting him to break out of character and sing an InSync (sp?) song and dance routine. Also, I never liked how he allowed Janet Jackson to take all the heat for the SuperBowl thing. He flat out cowered out and sidestepped all responsibility. Way to man up.
This looks godawful. I love Cillian but I wish he would pick better projects. I wonder if a day will ever come when I can take Timberlake seriously. And hey how about the Inception ripoff trailer music?!?!?
Inception rip-off trailer music?
Ooh yes the beginning of the trailer sure did sound a bit like Inception music to me as well. I am watching this for Cillian alone. He is a great actor.
Justin Timberlake just ruined this for me.
Nope… I’ll wait for Looper.
Nope…I’ll wait for the LOGAN’S RUN remake.
Absolutely love the cast of this. Smart move going young and new, although JT in the lead risks some comic effect where it shouldn’t be. Shame Victor Kartheiser’s role looks similar to his Mad Men style, because it’s important at this stage he show his range, especially given how brilliant he is.
It’s Vincent Kartheiser and it looks nothing like his Mad Men role as Pete Campbell. He’s obviously playing older and higher status here.
This sounds like an old “Twilight Zone” episode called “The Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross” wherein a man buys traits he wants from others, including youth. But then every high concept picture today sounds like an old “Twilight Zone” episode…
When you can’t understand a movie’s concept in a 3-minute trailer…good luck with that, as they say.
Plus Timberlake and the kid from THE BIG BANG THEORY? Bizarre, distracting casting on top of it.
Seemed pretty straight forward to me, time is their money, poor people die and the rich rule the world. Timberlake basically has to work everyday just to survive, is gifted with 100 years of time and decides to help other poor and working class individuals out.
It’s pretty heavy handed but could be entertaining.
The concept seemed pretty cut and dry in that one. The poor/struggling can’t buy enough time and treasure it/make the most of it, the rich can buy all the time they want and waste it. Poor guy is gifted a ton of time and then decides to play the part of Robin Hood, robs from the rich and gives to the poor.
LOL @ “lack of diversity.”
Who CARES? It’s a movie, not a sociology course.
Because people go to see representations of themselves onscreen.
Justin Timberlake is not just a below-average actor, he is the least talented working actor in Hollywood today. When you put people in deserving positions, it benefits everyone.
Will Smith wouldn’t be allowed to drink at a water fountain about five years before his birth. You put him in movies, it makes everyone wealthier, not just himself or blacks, but other groups as well.
The movie looks like crap, or else better actors would have signed up for it.
You, sir. Are a douche.
Is this the new GOP “pump me up” video?
I can just hear them in the boardroom now: “Why didn’t WE think of this idea?!!”
If memory serves, there was a short story in Playboy many years (decades) ago upon which I suspect this film is based. The protagonist in that story woke up after a bender with a hooker with just a few hours left to live.
It was called “The Phil Spector Story.”
What’s the logic in killing off all the low-paid workers, but keeping things going for the rich indolent do-nothings in tuxes? Who makes and runs things in this society? If all the able-bodied laborers are killed because they can’t buy time, won’t the rich people run out of stuff? This is silly.
LOL This comment could not be more ironic in the current political climate. Think about it.
Ditto
From the looks of it, they have to work to earn time (time = their currency) so it forces them to work every day or they die.
Just another form of living paycheck to paycheck, just more literal.
Some great talent in the supporting cast: Bomer, Murphy etc. but I have grave doubts about Timberlake’s ability to be up to the task of lead. With a decent script, direction and good supporting actors, it will probably be enjoyable, but I’ve a feeling it would have been more so with a better lead.
I’ve seen a lot of anti-Timberlake comments in other places this trailer has been posted, so I just hope the movie doesn’t tank because Justin in the lead turns too many people off.
Timberlake’s name on a cast list automatically puts a movie on my “do not see” list – and I don’t think I’m the only one. In this case I might otherwise want to see the film, but I’ll be taking a pass.
i love Niccol and sci fi in general; however, Timberlake in this is a non starter for me. I’d prefer he stayed up on the stage and did his thing (and did it well) and avoided acting altogether, but if he’s going to insist on this “acting” thing he’s attempting, best he kept it to silly romcoms. (By the way, he’s atrocious in BAD TEACHER. His whole “in on the joke” form of acting may get giggles from infatuated girls on SNL – and some dudes, I’m sure – but it does not make for a convincing or engaging feature perfomance).
The basic idea is incredibly close to “The Price of Life”, a 1987 short film written and directed by Stephen Tolkin. Well worth a look if you can track it down.
It kinda had me until Olivia Wilde’s mug showed up. She is way too overexposed!!!!
She’s striking while the iron is still lukewarm.
Isn’t this a variation on the Ellison story “Repent Harlequin, said the Tik Tok Man,” We’ll find out if Ellison sues. Why the hell is Timberlake in the lead. He and Bomer should’ve switched parts, or they could’ve put Cillian Murphy in the lead.
Justin Timberlake can’t act. He can recite dialogue in a script, but I’ve yet to see any performance where he’s actually ‘acting.’ This trailer proves it to me as well. The guy is a blank slate. Whatever other problems this film has, it will never get beyond Timberlake’s wooden delivery of every single line. That’s not to say that it won’t be a box office hit – it will just never be a good movie.
