EXCLUSIVE: Former Malcolm In the Middle star Jane Kaczmarek has joined the cast of NBC’s upcoming comedy series Whitney as a recurring. Created by Whitney Cummings, the multicamera comedy revolves around Whitney (Cummings) and Alex (Chris D’Elia), a happily unmarried couple. Kaczmarek will play Whitney’s outspoken mom who has been married several times. Beverly D’Angelo played the role in the pilot, and those scenes will now be reshot. Whitney premieres Sept. 22 in the plum post-Office Thursday slot. Kaczmarek, repped by ICM and Greenlight Management, earned seven consecutive lead comedy actress Emmy nominations for her role on Malcolm. After a drama stint on TNT’s Raising the Bar, she recently returned to comedy with a guest spot on last week’s episode of FX’s new irreverent comedy Wilfred.

Any reason why they made the change?
Anybody knows why D’Angelo is being replaced?
Read the title and immediately knew she would be playing her mom. This is great casting and Kacmarek is hilarious.
Up All Night looks like it could be a huge hit for NBC. But, Whitney looks like it will be canceled in two weeks.
Agree. DAngelo is spared a disapointment. The promos for this show look horrible. Not funny, not likable.
please tell me they will tweak the laugh track on ‘whitney.’ the promos were awful. killed whatever humor was in there.
Is NBC trying to spend all their money promoting this show and guaranteeing it falls flat on its face just like the so called comedy of its lead?
I’d love for it to surprise me, but this is NBC and a very unfunny Whitney Cummings shaping up to be another miss!
Chelsea, that’s not nice. Who’s desk are you sitting at writing this? Are you sending inappropriate emails in their name to their friends again?
I really like the trailers and am looking forward to this. I think there is great potential in the Whitney/boyfriend chemistry. I adore Jane Kaczmarek, but it took a little time for her character to grow on me in MitM. Hoping for the best for this show!
I agree with most of the posters regarding Whitney. I never saw promos that made me hate a character as much as her. Not one laugh and I have no desire to see it. I give it 2 weeks tops!
i keep seeing the promos for this show and it’s simply unfunny. Not trying to be a snob or anything, but the lead is so obnoxious and it’s not cute.
The amazing Beverly D’Angelo was far too beautiful to play Whitney’s mom. It was a crummy role, too.
Maulik Pancholy was the best thing in the pilot and he had nothing to do.
I haven’t seen the promos for UAN, but the script was a disaster. Whitney has to be better than that.
I love reading the articles on Deadline, but what I will never understand is why people go out of their way to take the time to write how much they hate something or how much something sucks. If you’re in the industry you know how hard it really is to get anything on the air, why so much hatred for every single project? I don’t know her, but she’s done something I haven’t, so good luck to her and everyone else who got their shows on the air this season.
this is the worst comment I’ve ever read on deadline. How crap like this ever makes it on the site I’ll never understand. keep your well wishing cumbaya bulls%#t to yourself : )
Still horrible. Cancelled after 3 episodes.
i watched previews …
laugh tracks???
that really sux
They act as if we’re supposed to know who Whitney Cummings is. I’ve never heard of her outside of this show. They guy on the show is cute, though.
I think NBC knows this show is bad. They scheduled all their top new shows for the spring. I think they are trying to buy ratings for a few weeks by promoting it nonstop. The first episode will likely get a good number, but it will plummet with the second episode. Then they can put 30 Rock or Vodka in it’s place. Or they can move one of the Tuesday shows to that spot and put 30 Rock at 8 on Tuesday.
Yes. I will never understand the logic of repeating the same overbearing clip of an unlikeable character over and over again all summer in the hopes that the audience will want more when it premieres. Smarter PR – hinting at the show, hinting at her character, not clips from the pilot… and making the character more likeable, by the way. Human nature is such that we still are drawn to inherently likeable people. I don’t care if it’s 2011 vs. 1970 when the Mary Tyler Moore Show launched. Especially when we don’t know the person yet, we’ve yet to officially invite them into our homes, why would we be drawn to obnoxious undertones? Likeable and hip can coexist. From what I’ve seen in Whitney so far – it doesn’t.
I disagree. I think the show needs to find its rhythm but the pilot overall is funny and by the end I found Whitney endearing. I am looking forward to the show and I think Jane K is a fantastic choice. She is an amazing actress and hilarious. They even look like they are related. Great casting choice.
Just because this show isn’t a single-camera cork feast with SNL alumni roots doesn’t mean its a bad show.
100% agree.
It doesn’t make it a good show either.
Unfortunately, next to Chelsea Handler (that script was equally embarrassing) she is one of the most irritating woman ever…nothing funny about her…just in your face. And woman don’t like her…(a large part of the audience) let alone middle-America who will turn off this show in a heartbeat…who can relate to being obnoxious, crude and simply crass.
Beverly D’Angelo is awesome!!! WTF????? They were lucky to have her…..RETARDED….except Jane actually looks similar to Whitney
Big mistake calling this show “Whitney,” as if we’re all supposed to love this person we never heard of. It makes the show, and the lead, harder to like.
Astute.
The negative comments must be from jeleous women because Whitney,s so HOT, and FUNNY. And Chris Delea is the funniest man out there. Sure fire hit. Honest, funny, and sexy.
Can’t believe such a good actress would jump on an obviously sinking ship. Also, forget Whitney – the lead male Delia is easily one of the hackiest comedians I have ever seen EVER, just looked up some of his clips on Youtube. Jane and NBC should have done a little homework.
I will hold my comments on Whitney. Up All Night, I predict, won’t last. The premise of the show is a little bit disturbing to me. A show based on parents complaining about their infant? Something is wrong. What if the show is a hit and the kid grows up? I can see being unhappy about your job, your in-laws, your neighbors, but taking it out on an infant – ummm, I don’t know if the public will like it.
You are aware that this is a television show, right? Which kid are we worrying about growing up… the fictional one?
Johnindc…can’t agree more? Don’t understand the concept of “UP ALL NIGHT”. How can this show actually work…about complaining about your baby while so many out there in the real world pray to have a child. NBC needs to get over Lorne Michaels…and he should do the same.
