BREAKING: Jason Bateman is attached to star with Bridesmaids‘ Melissa McCarthy in the Universal comedy ID Theft. Bateman is producing the comedy with Scott Stuber. Script’s by The Pursuit of Happyness scribe Steve Conrad with Craig Mazin rewriting. The premise
was originally for a guy who gets his identity stolen by another guy, and it was written for Bateman and another actor. That changed after Bateman saw McCarthy’s scene stealing role in the summer hit Universal comedy Bridesmaids and he pushed for her to be the identity thief. This is meant to be McCarthy’s first film when Mike & Molly goes on hiatus, shooting in April 2012. Bateman has become an increasingly industrious producer, most recently setting up a movie deal for Under the Banner Of Heaven, the drama based on the Jon Krakauer non fiction book that got set up at Warner Bros, with Ron Howard directing and Dustin Lance Black writing. Bateman is producing the Brian Grazer, Shannon Costello and Stephanie Davis.

yeah the same Bridesmaids that Nikki bashed?!? lol way to go Melissa!!!
Yeah for Melissa’s film success! Anything that distances McCarthy from Mike and Molly is fine with me. Emmy nom or not, any show that has her playing straight man to the rest of the cast does NOT know how to use this comic gem to the best of her abilities.
Stuber. Mazin. Hmmmmm.
zzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz
great news! I love Melissa!
What does Bateman do as a producer besides get a bigger check?
Bateman is too good to fall in the middle. He needs career guidance. Not people throwing him into nonsense for money. Of course he may like money so wtf.
Thank you.
Smart thinking. There are numerous studio high-concept comedies sitting on the shelf waiting for attention from some male “name.” How about some names like Tina, Kristen, Melissa, Cameron, Emma…?
…Conrad draft based on an original screenplay called The Identity Thief written by Jerry Eeten!
Why don’t you have credit then? Was it stolen? Was there a credit thief? Do tell.
The original script (written by Jerry Eeten) was optioned by Stuber and Bateman got attached. It has been in development and most recently, McCarthy has signed on. The original script is hilarious. It will make a great movie.
JERRY!!! I know him!!!!!!! I think he needs a financial adviser… I’m the guy
Yeah, too bad Bateman is one more flop away from going back to television, himself. The only hit he’s been in recently (Horrible Bosses) was a critical bomb and no one even remembered he was in it, anyway. Charlie Day and Aniston got all the press (positive and negative). He and Sudeikis ought to be working on a small screen re-boot of Kate & Allie.
Horrible Bosses was in no way a critical bomb.
Critical bomb? “Horrible Bosses” was certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 70% positive. Check your facts, Kieran.
I did check them. It actually had a 59% (which is certified Rotten) among critics who actually do more than post from their mom’s basements in between watching Asian porn and Star Trek reruns..
Oh you mean critics like Roger Ebert who kick dead people before they’re cold? Or just some other grumpy dude?
In the battle between Craig Mazin and Josh Olson, I guess we all know who won.
Has Olson had one produced credit since History of Violence?
Hee. Thought I was the only one who remembers that battle.
Nonsense. While Bateman has had some clunkers, he was THE reason I saw Horrible Bosses, and he was the actor most cited by everyone else I know who saw it as well. He is extremely funny, talented, and charismatic actor. He needs to be more selective, I will grant you.
Also, why would a return to TV be bad? It’s good work, and maybe, just maybe, Showtime would get smart enough to bring back Arrested Development!
Actually, I think it was Charlie Day that stole the movie, but Bateman was ace in it as well. He was 1 for 2 this summer, but, hey, that’s still batting .500, right? He’s done movies like “The Kingdom” and “Up in the Air” alongside the wacky comedies, which I think shows he’s got the desire and the range for all different types of projects.
When is Hollywood going to accept the fact that Jason Bateman, while talented and effective in featured roles, is not a leading man. And then tell them that Jake Gyllenhaal and Channing Tatum aren’t the answer either.
Shouldn’t a star be someone whose name alone on the marquee opens the film big and guarantees a hit?
Every other week there’s a new “Movie Stars Don’t Matter Anymore” article.
could the tanking of the two-guys life-switching “The Change-Up” have anything to do with Bateman “switching” the sex of his “Identity Theft” co-star? Just saying…
Talk about overrated. Bateman plays the same boring straight guy role in EVERY film. Is that what makes him a good actor? Imagine Bateman playing: a serial killer, a drunk abusive father, a racist lawyer in the 50′s, the last man saving the world from zombies (non comedy), how bout a pirate, a priest or better yet as the Green Lantern. The problem is he can’t. Please watch where you throw the word “good actor”. There’s already too many of them out there now.
Bateman is great in everything he does. Have you ever seen him be bad? Ever? He can make some dough on studio movies, then dip into a critical darling like Juno tomorrow.
What is the big deal about Melissa McCarthy…she’s not that funny and not even interesting to watch. Let’s be honest she wasn’t even a scene stealer in “Bridesmaids” …you people must be so easy to please..and/or stupid…She was a fat slob in that movie and disgusting(not funny…REALLY!)….Kristen Wiig was the STAR and only STAR in that movie… ‘Mike and Molly’ is just another stupid show that stays on the air because the network owes Chuck Lorre… Hollywood is getting so obnoxious and desperate. As for Bateman he’s just picking the wrong movies and the studios are apiring him with the wrong leading ladies. he’s a pretty decent actor who can be the straight comedic actor with a serious side..not bad to watch…..as for Melissa,,oh yea I’ve already had my say!
Wow…so basically your whole opinion of her is of her weight. And that probably means your opinion on Bateman’s choices of movie roles is based on something equally meaningless.
Now run along and watch something where only the thin actors are hired so it won’t upset your delicate sensibilities over seeing fat.
And for the love of God cover your eyes when channel surfing! Who knows when one of those fatties will pop out at you and ruin your viewing pleasure!?
That being said, Melissa McCarthy rocks! I have loved her since ‘Go’. Can’t wait to see Melissa and Jason together.
She needs to recreate her Bridesmaids character…so great. I find him doing the same hat trick every movie…makes me know what to expect every time. I think it’s hurting his box office mojo.
He has stated that himself as well. That he is usually the character that verbalizes the plot for the audience, etc.
It is a valid point and it would be interesting to see him take on different facets, like a Fight Club type of movie.
However, I think his face needed to catch up with some wrinkles before darker and edgier roles could be offered. He has really just started to show some age so I will be expecting a psychopath role after a few years. Here is hoping the audience follows when it happens.
