EXCLUSIVE: After taking a stab at light drama with CBS’ The Defenders, former According to Jim star Jim Belushi is returning to comedy with a new half-hour project from Murphy Brown creator Diane English. The pairing of Belushi and English, who will co-write the story together, sparked bidding among studios before ultimately landing at ABC Studios, which also produced According to Jim. The deals are still being finalized, but ABC Studios is expected to re-team with According to Jim co-producer Brillstein Entertainment Partners on the show, about a single father with a teen offspring. Belushi’s and English’s companies will also produce, with the two executive produing alongside Brillstein Entertainment. With ABC Studios as the studio, it is considered likely that the comedy will end up at ABC, the network where According to Jim ran for eight seasons, but that is not a given as the project is expected to be taken out to other networks. Belushi is the latest sitcom star to be eying a return to primetime. Tim Allen is headlining a new series for ABC this fall, Kirstie Alley is set to star in an ABC comedy pilot, and Roseanne Barr is developing a new starring vehicle for herself at 20th Century Fox TV. Belushi and English are with ICM.

Uh ABC if you’re looking to reteam, what about Damon Wayans. Can you sign a non white actor as a lead in a show?
I second that. Damon Wayans is hilarious. I don’t see why not either considering his son is on Happy Endings which is on ABC also
totally agree, especially if they’re looking for primetime buffoonery completely devoid of any character driven comedy. nobody can do as much with bad broad writing as Damon has in the past. but the primetime landscape has shifted a bit since they launched my wife and kids and they may not be that desperate this time around. CBS wasn’t this past pilot season. and i don’t think it has anything to do with the color of his skin, Damon’s done pretty well in the cross-over department.
Kerry Washington in Scandal created by Shonda Rhimes.
One word: Ew.
I will never understand why CBS cancelled ‘The Defenders’. Of all the newbies from last season it was one of the best. But CBS played the ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ scheduling nonsense that dooms many good shows. ‘V’ got axed for the same reason.
Only in Hollywood.
i will forever be irritated with cbs for cancelling the defenders. i absolutely loved that show. it was unique, funny, and well written. they never even gave it a chance. ugh, i am still so irked when i think about it! gggrrr.
totally agree. was good fun.
and America loses again.
I cannot think of anyone I am less anxious to see on another series than Jim Belushi.
Agreed. It’s not like we’ve all forgotten how terrible those last few seasons of JIM were.
Jim Belushi – one of the most unlikeable, unappealing, unattractive, untalented, annoying actors alive. Why he’s had a career at all these last twenty-five years I cannot say…
Agree, never got this guy….his agent deserves some kind of an award.
Except Damon wayans
Having worked the entire run of “According to Jim”, I can objectively say that this will probably be the worst experience everyone on the staff and crew will ever have. Ever.
Wow…
Cleaning the studio at night doesn’t count as “working” the entire run of Jim.
“…about a single father with a teen offspring…”
Diane English and Murphy Brown were great, but the story was more along the lines of a slick Mary Tyler Moore with terrific writing, an interesting work environment and phenomenal cast.
This new show doesn’t sound particularly interesting or challenging based upon the description.
Boy Howdy! If this new show is anything like the non-stop laugh machine that was According To Jim, America is in for a big, big treat. God bless Jim Belushi and God Bless The United States Of America.
Wow, this is the perfect recipe for disaster in front of and especially behind the camera.
This headline sounds like the premise of a sitcom! It’ll be a fun story to track on Deadline once they start working together. My money’s on Diane suing ICM for initiating this brainchild.
Jim Belushi’s career exists solely out of dead-sibling-nostalgia and appears to be otherwise unfettered by talent.
Having also worked the entire run of ATJ…I concur w/Leigh. I’d rather be unemployed and homeless than work on anything associated with Jim again.
Wow, dated people making dated TV.
They’re going co-write it??? These two will kill eachother. This show, IF it makes to pilot, will NEVER see the light of day!
I think maybe this is what the Mayans were talking about.
You couldn’t be more right, Leigh. Been there, done that, not doing it again.
Um, this comment thread is fabulous. More coverage of this deal/show, please!
The one-hit wonder (English) meets the no-hit wonder (Belushi).
Belushi only has a career because idiots in this industry prayed he had the same talent of his dead brother…and boy!! he doesn’t! he’s beyond untalented, he’s an arrogant prick…ask anyone who’s unfortunately worked with him. Diane English is SO above this. Why aim so low, Diane??…
Correction. Diane English WAS above this…about 15 years ago. Other than that hackjob remake of The Women a few years back, what else has she done since Murphy Brown?
How does this guy keep getting shows? Does he have incriminating evidence against the networks? (Nah, that wouldn’t mean a thing these days.)
He’s not funny, not a convincing actor, hard to work with, and was lucky enough to be the younger brother of a comic legend.
C’mon Jim, time to let someone else in the pool. Go tour your Blues Brothers Lite routine at the Native American casino nightclub circuit.
please deadline, interview these people who worked with belushi and publish their stories anonymously. i beg of you…
well at least its not HawthorNE HAHAHAHA
And all you sour puss TV critics are top in your chosen fields? Not only that, you should be the ones who determines what the rest of us should watch, and enjoy because you are the experts! Thank gawd you are here to watch over us and to keep us safe!
BTW I watch According to Jim to see Courtney….not Jim. Andy is the hilarious one!
