White Irish Drinkers writer-director John Gray has acquired the Bryan Gruley mystery thriller The Hanging Tree, and he’ll write the script to direct. Gray will also produce it under his Ovington Avenue Productions along with partner Melissa Jo Peltier. They worked together on White Irish Drinkers, the coming-of-age drama that was released by Screen Media. The Hanging Tree is the second novel in Gruley’s Starvation Lake mystery series. Gus Carpenter, a former Detroit Times reporter-turned-detective, tries to solve the mystery of how a former resident of the Michigan resort town winds up hanging from a tree after she returns home. Gray, who created the CBS series The Ghost Whisperer and wrote and directed Martin and Lewis and Helter Skelter for CBS, also directed the features Born to Be Wild and The Glimmer Man. The book deal was made by WME. ”Bryan Gruley has written a brilliant series of novels, with rich characters in an incredibly visual and fascinating world,” Gray said. “The themes in this particular novel resonated deeply with me and I’m passionate about bringing it to the screen.”

If you people think I’m a hack…
Couldn’t have said it better.
After having seen “White Irish Drinkers,” I’m looking forward to the result of this deal. John Gray is an exceptionally talented and creative man. I recently had occasion to meet him and have found him to also be a very genuine and kind person. The mean-spirited comments here are unfortunate because a man like John certainly doesn’t deserve them. I think the comments say more about the people making them than about John.
I am really looking forward to seeing this movie! I think John Gray not only has a vision about his work, but he has the great ability to make that vision come alive on the big screen. White Irish Drinkers is only one example of this. I love his work- The Hunly amazed me with the research he did. I show this movie to my class- still amazed that when the Hunly was raised, they found the gold coin inside! Billy Galvin, his first big movie brings me back to my own family growing up. I could go on and on, I am a John Gray FAN!!
Way to go Melanie! You’ll see dozens of positive comments on FaceBook including some from people with actual talent.
I am not sure what the detrimental comments were about John, but he is one of the kindest, generous, and down to earth man I know.
He is wonderfully talented, and has made many movies for
Turner Movie channel as well as Hallmark, and there is not a mean bone in his body.
Why anyone would try to demean him is beyond me. I wish more “Hollywood types” were more like him.
I cannot wait to see his next film, and I am sure it will be brilliant!
I am looking forward to this movie because John and Melissa’s last contribution to the world of cinema was downright excellent! The people who have nothing better to do than make negative comments about someone they don’t even know just embarrass themselves with their idiocy. John seems to be a very nice guy and an excellent filmmaker. Makes me sick to my stomach to read such ludicrous accusations!
I’ve known John for more years than I would care to admit. He’s always had a talent for making movies and has worked hard at it. white Irish Drinkers is a very good movie an John can take pride in his latest effort.
I’m sure his next film will be even better just because John is that type of a person. He won’t rest on what ever his last film is, he will always try to make a better one. oh , to the person that made the comment ” they call me a hack” they do that for a reason, you are.
We can make these demeaning comments because I,for one, have personally been unfortunate to work with him!!.Complete jerk…he didn’t have a clue what he was doing…we were all racing to cover his ass while he locked himself in his office…never addressing anyone’s issues, location concerns, script notes… He’s smooth..nice,caring bullshit..(got it down pat).then screws everyone behind their backs. Get your heads out of the clouds…you bought into him
