Seminal punk rock singer Patti Smith will collaborate with Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan to adapt Just Kids, the bestselling memoir Smith wrote about her close relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe as both came of age in their respective art forms in New York City during the ’60s and ’70s. They’ve decided to write the screenplay on spec rather than set it up with a distribution, which they certainly could have done after Just Kids won the 2010 National Book Award for Non-fiction. In fact, a lot of prestige producers wanted it. Logan most recently won a Tony Award for his play Red, about painter Mark Rothko, and he has the Ralph Fiennes-directed Coriolanus and Martin Scorsese-directed Hugo coming this fall. The book was repped by DCL Agency and Logan’s repped by CAA.

The role of Mapplethorpe would fit Keegan Allen from PRETTY LITTLE LIARS like a glove! Someone should take that kid out to lunch about this.
really glad. The true and only rock chick!
Almost agreed. She is is a true but not an only. She is the grandmother of punk and still going strong without having fallen to the needle… of botox, that is.
while this sounds great – it’s an HBO project – not a theatrical release. it just has all the warning signs of box office disappointment – poets, artists, musicians and a homosexual theme. Is Strand still around? They might be able to do something with it.
Strand to finance? They’re still around, but their licensing fees are close to negligible.
this will mark the second maplethorpe floating around? i guess patty wasn’t happy with the first one which was rumored to have franco attached.
Saw Patti many times in the 70′s at the Bottom Line, CBGB’s, etc., and she was the best front man/women I ever saw and I saw them all – Jager, Plant, Daltry, Springsteen. She always showered her audience with love, knew her audience and respected their intelligence. Much tougher crowds back then and this is a woman who never compromised her artistic principles for a buck. Ever. Go Rimbaud, Go Rimbaud and GO PATTI, GO!!!!!
LOVED this book! Thought it would make a fantastic movie when I read it. Am so happy Patti is putting it together in the right way. Bodes well for the project.
This is a really beautiful, heartfelt book. One of the best I’ve read lately, particularly when describing just how much Mapplethorpe and Smith boostered each other as artists while basically living as near-homeless people in New York. Is it a movie? If Smith wasn’t involved, I’d say no. But, benefit of the doubt, right?
Did Mapplethorpe ever create a “Piss Patty”?
Kieran Culkin should play Robert and Mia Wasikowska should play Patty.
Gus Van Sant should direct.
Love Mia as Patti, Kieran could do Robert, but also Michael Pitt could do a beautiful Robert. The writing and the casting have got to live up to the book or it’s not going to be worth it. And please no James Franco for this role. He doesn’t have the acting chops like Michael and for that matter Mia.
…..oh and definately NOT Kristen S. Need someone that has substance.
As long as they don’t cast any Twilighters in it, I’m down.
Nuh-uh. Kristen S as Patti S is a pretty clear casting choice.
Definitely not Kristen Stewart, she’s so stiff. This needs to be a real actress.
That is a great news. I am big Patti Smith fan. I see no other but Kate Moennig play the part of Patti. She did patti smith photoshoot and totaly looked like her. and is very talented actress on top of it.
Kristen Stewart as Patti Smith definetely. Perfect role for her and she is a great actress. Time for her to move on from Twilight.
Great news. Kristen Stewart would be the ideal actress to play Patti. She would rock the hell out of this role like nobody else. Perfect part for her!
Loved the book. Look forward to this. I agree with the others that Kristen Stewart is the perfect choice to play Patti.
Katherine Moennig is the perfect Patti. Check out the pictures by Cass Bird featuring Moennig as Smith. Stunning and my personal fav.
K-Stew has herself another role. Perfect part for a perfect actress!
Kristen Stewart would be the WORST possible choice for the role of Patti Smith – she already failed miserably when she portrayed Joan Jett in the Runaways movie.
Mia Wasikowska – no way Jose.
She’s too soft for the role.
Katherine Moennig would be excellent.
I thought she made a very convincing Joan Jett (most critics agree).
Agree. Kate Moennig
P.S.
Years ago Patti said she would cast Juliette Lewis as herself
- who is probably now too old for the role.
Patti Smith fans are throwing around the name of a French singer actress named Charlotte Gainsbourg
Gainsbourg would be perfect but she’s older than Juliette Lewis.
Gainsbourg would be great once they get older (last section of the book, in the 80′s). She’s even a singer. Kristen Stewart would instantly bomb this movie, this needs to have an indie feel or else Patti Smith will not be happy. Also, should only use the music that she talks about listening to in the movie.
Kate Moennig is absolutely perfect to play Petty!!!
I prefer Kate Moennig for the role as Patti Smith.
Kate Moennig!!!
Kate Moennig is perfect for the role of Patti Smith!
Kate Moennig of course as Patti Smith!
Kristen stewart? no way!
patti smith is nothing like joan jett, kristen wouldn’t portray patti well anyway.
Whoever suggested Mia must be on drugs or something.
