EXCLUSIVE: After a long search process, 20th Century Fox and Bruce Willis have just chosen John Moore to direct Die Hard 5. The film will shoot in Russia, and the hope is to make it before Willis moves on to shoot a Red sequel for Summit Entertainment. In fact, Willis has just begun going through the same director search with Summit on a sequel to the 2010 hit Red. Robert Schwentke is busy helming Universal’s R.I.P.D. with Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. They’ve just begun casting the dragnet for directors on that film. Names like Breck Eisner are being floated, but other shooters are being considered.
As for Die Hard 5, Moore is in final negotiations and was in the running through the entire search as Fox tried to find a filmmaker that pleased Willis and the studio execs that have to shoot this movie in Russia and bring it in on a budget and a tight schedule. Fox has been looking for a new director since Noam Murro left the picture after he got the job helming 300: Battle Of Artemisia for Warner Bros. The studio started with a wish list of directors to helm the script by Skip Woods that included Joe Cornish (who directed Attack the Block), Fast Five helmer Justin Lin, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, and Moore. More recently, I’d heard Fox had conversations with helmers that included Gary Fleder, Paul McGuigan and 1408 helmer Mikael Hafstrom.
Moore didn’t have to necessarily sell Fox; the studio loves the Irishman. But he did have to convince Willis, who has been very hands-on in the selection of Die Hard directors. Moore and Willis had long meetings and Willis was swayed by Moore’s love for the John McClane character, and his grasp of how to shoot practical, non-CGI-heavy action scenes that have been a hallmark of the Die Hard series.
Moore has directed all of his films at Fox: Behind Enemy Lines, Flight of the Phoenix, The Omen and Max Payne. He hasn’t yet scored a blockbuster — only The Omen crossed $100 million in worldwide grosses — but he certainly has a shot at one now. Even though the first film launched Willis’ star way back in 1988, the series has been remarkably resilient. The most recent installment, Live Free Or Die Hard, grossed $384 million worldwide on a budget reported to be $100 million. I’m told that the studio hopes to make this film in that range. Moore’s repped by CAA.

Die Hard is my #2 fav movie ever. I usually don’t like sequels but #4 scene with the fighter jet firing onto the tractor rig driven by John is bad ass!
Tom Rothman strikes again!! He puts in a studio plant director that they can control and order to make the exact film Rothman wants. They did this with Wolverine (and it backfired which required bringing in Richard Donner as a “consulting director); same on Eragon and they had to bring in Jonathan Mostow to “supervise” and the same on too many other Fox movies to count. Time and time again when Fox has the chance to do something different and break out they cowardly retreat to the same old crappy policies that have resulted in one bad film after another. Yes Apes was well reviewed and is a good film but that is a reboot and the 1 good for 10 bad Rothman track record.
I’m no Tom Rothman apologist, never met the man, have no idea what he’s like, but what about X-Man First Class, another worldwide hit this summer? Or the Night At The Museum franchise? Or that small little personal film called Avatar two years ago? Fox pretty much let Cameron have free reign on that one. Worldwide hits, all. When you throw in what the Die Hards have been doing with regularity, that’s a pretty good track record. Even the reviled X-Men Origins: Wolverine crossed $300 million worldwide. As far as action films go, someone’s doing something right.
Bruce Willis is the true definition of a Star. He has franchises to rely on while choosing many other projects from action to comedy. Sure, some of his films have been duds…but, overall, Bruce Willis continues to quietly put picture after picture into the marketplace.
You have to give him career longevity kudos…plus, he is good in most everything he does…even if the film is not particularly good.
Good call, Tom! It’s about time Bruce Willis gets some attention!
I love Bruce he’s my very favorite! Great job no matter what genre! John rocks. Thank you
Way to go Willis and Fox. Why even throw out exciting names to fans like Cornish, Lin, and Refn when everyone in the industry predicted you’d select the least exciting and appealing of the bunch?
For a moment, it looked as if the Die Hard franchise would get the kick in the pants and the R-rated injection cool that’s been missing since Vengeance, and arguably since Die Harder.
I can already see Moore’s overly flashy, by-the-numbers vision of a Russian-set Die Hard 5 with McClane’s son(s), so that saves me a $12 ticket. And please tell me this won’t be in 3-D.
Can’t wait to see Red 2…put someone badass on it please!
Hopefully they actually make a good movie this time. Die Hard 4 had a completely unconvincing bad guy. Hopefully it’s more like Die Hard with a Vengeance or the first film, instead of the crappy watered-down fourth movie.
Re: bad guy….Get thee a young Alan Rickman
Joe Cornish would be a great choice as director of Red 2, now that John Moore has Die Hard 5.
Wow. This is disheartening. Although if they do go practical action with less CGI, that is a good thing. THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT: MAKE THIS RATED R! Die Hard 4 was decent, but it’s main problem was the PG13 rating. This is Die Hard, not 24! Mclane has to cuss, he has to say yippe-kay yay mother fucker! There has to be violence. Please, Fox, please give fans of the series what we want and deserve, a new R Rated Die Hard film. Otherwise I will skip this like I did the last one in theaters, or at best will pay for another movie and sneak into it, simply so a PG13 Die Hard film will not get my money.
Studio exec: John, we still got sequel rights to die hard?
Creative exec: yes sir, got a couple more years before they expire
Studio exec: last one do good? Can’t remember
Creative exec: barely. And it was critically maligned
Studio exec: tell you what. Pets greenlight a sequel. Need to plug a hole next may
Creative exec: sure thing boss. What should I say the film is about in our press release?
Studio exec: …
Creative exec: I’ll just say it takes place in Russia, that should satisfy them
Studio exec: good thinking. Make sure you pass that note to the writer
Creative exec: who did we hire again?
Studio exec: ….
Oh, come on, the Creative Executive would know who he hired to write the movie… because his call sheet would be full of calls from all 20 writers demanding to know where their 6-month-late paychecks are!
LOL…”the last one” did “barely good” and was “critically maligned” ? Hmm…no. Simply not true. It made 384M on a 110M budget, so it was an obvious international hit AND it was critically acclaimed : Rottentomatoes = 82; Metacritic = 69. Those are great scores to begin with, but for an ACTION SEQUEL, they are EXCELLENT.
John McClane carries those films. Ive always wanted to play that type of character or supporting character. Willis is a legend, hands down my favorite. The die hard series is the only set of films that didnt make me shake my head when i heard ” theyre in talks to make another one”
Not one female director among the bunch. Appalling.
If by “appalling” you mean “great”, then yes, I agree. This is a film by men for men; chicks need not apply.
You don’t think K-Big or Mimi Leder could knock this one over the Green Monster?
Absolutely I think Bigalow or Leder could do a great job. Heck, I think Bigalow is probably more qualified to do the job than the guy they just hired. However, I’m going to respond to Jan Eliasberg’s sexist drivel with a bit of my own. And I wouldn’t sully my reputation as a director by doing DIE HARD 5: DIGGING UP A CORPSE AND KICKING THE HELL OUT OF IT. DH5 would actually be a step down for either Bigalow or Leder.
Bull. Don’t tell me someone like Kathryn Bigelow couldn’t get deep into the boys club mentality that is “Die Hard.” That’s an egregious claim. There goes the idea of all those male directors looking to make sensitive female dramas, eh?
Didn’t he have a daughter in 4? The chick from Scott Pilgrim, i think.
Better Die Hard than Red! Oy this is discouraging. Man I wish John Mctiernan hadn’t fibbed in court.
I only hope that Willis will loosen the fu#k up and give us some fun times with John McClane again. The last one was barely a true “Die Hard” film. Wearing his black coat and staying in full ‘brooding action hero’ mode, never cracking a smile…geez, stop trying so hard Bruce. You’re the man. Calm down. What happened to the Moonlighting/DieHard/Fifth Element guy? Remember him? We liked him. Not too much ‘method’ acting, just fun. The Screw Up Who Saves The Day. And grow out whats left of your hair, Die Hard 3/16 Blocks style. It looks good that way, John McClane would not shave his head. Never in a million years. Now, where in all of this Director search talk is Renny Harlin or John McTiern’s names? I guess keeping the franchise alive is not enough for a return gig, eh? Both these guys know how to deliver the film Fox/Willis wants. That Willis can’t just push ‘em over is another reason a strong director is needed. I’m sure either would be delighted to take the job regardless of whatever ‘bad blood’ may still exsist. Which brings me to my last rant: Main Villain. Please break out your wallets Fox/Willis and pay for someone that is an actual challenge for McClane and not some “fresh face” the “kids” will like. The first and third Die Hard’s are my favorite (so you can guess who I think should direct this next masterpiece), mainly because I so enjoyed watching the main actors INTERACT. DieHards are a cat and mouse game, and it’s boring if the villain is not up to the task (the forgettable villians of 2&4)
Oh, and if you could work in Bonnie Bedelia (or Juliane Moore playing her character) or Sam Jackson it would be over the top fantastic. You’ve created a film family, when you don’t dip back into the well to re-establish/call back these realtionships you weaken/lessen what could be a far move emotional and engaging film.
Agreed on every point.
Timothy Olpyhant is usually a great actor but was very weak in DH4. Come on give us another Gruber brother! And bust out McTiernan for a few months while your at it!
If not him then how about Tony Scott? Last Boy Scout is an underrated gem.
Amen, brother!
Getting dictionary definition of journeyman director – John Moore – to helm Die Hard 5 is a tacit admission of mediocrity.
And the Die Hard series is the bastion of non-CGI action? That’s a laugh. The monstrosity that was the 4th film was full of it.
JOHN MOORE is a nice guy but he’s such an uninspired choice. This franchise has legs, it’s fantastic. They could make 5 more and the public would be there. ROTHMAN just “plugged” somebody in. Such a shame.
Fox totally screwed up the choice of director. Assignment should have gone to Kevin Smith.
I’m worried about this. Let’s face it, the 4th film was a disappointment. It was light in the pants, had a weak bad guy (nothing against Timothy Olyphant/it was the character) and looked NOTHING like the three that came before it.
I think John Moore is a good director. His films look fantastic. What worries me is the screenplay (SkipWoods has churned out some BIG TIME stinkers) and the studio execs watering the movie down into PG-13 polite.
Here’s a lesson for ALL EXECUTIVES. You don’t have to sneak into R-films anymore. It’s called online tickets, kiosks, ect…
I was at the theatre last month and there was a shit-ton of 14 year-olds buying tickets to Horrible Bosses right in front of me. Same w/ 300. Nobody cares unless it’s NC-17. I went and saw loads of R-rated films in my teens w/out sneaking in and that was the 90′s.
And no mom out there is going to say “OH, Terminator/Aliens/DieHard whatever is rated PG-13. I think I’ll take the kids.”
C’mon! Let McClane air it out!
Just please, please, please please return the series back to its adult roots. Give it some edge.
That means swearing (and not a few piss poor fucks added after the movie has shot).
Go on Bruce, make a decent film. For grown-ups. Make a Die Hard film. A proper, real Die Hard film.
Every Die Hard since Die Harder (1990) has been utter rubbish. What a shame, running a franchise into the ground.
Too bad for Bruce, what a rise and fall around Deals with Diehards.
If only, if only. Well, that is this business. Who know what the future will bring?
Hope the best for Bruce and others.
And ZolarKingOfAllMoney, Aug 31, 8:49PM, is exactly right.
Seagrams, It’s wet and it’s dry! My, My…
We all need some easy fun…heck, nothing like opening an old vault, and drinking a thousand year old Wine cooler.
Filming entirely in Russia? I heard the summit film wasn’t easy to do there, hopefully fox has better luck…
Bruce is one of my biggest action hero. However with my wish that the movie could continue throughout the coming generations like James Bond, I do feel they have to pick another main man to be the star of the next DIE HARD movie .
VIN DIESEL is the only guy I know is the closest to bring the role forward.
Hope you guys can help bring my tiny voice to the director JOHN MOORE.
