When Luc Besson shot The Lady, he and his backers did their best to pretend it was not about Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition leader who spent 15 years under house arrest because of her relentless nonviolent campaign for democracy. They kept it under wraps because they didn’t want to jeopardize the chance she might be freed, and because they might have had problems during the shoot in Thailand. She was freed last November. The film is a real departure for Besson, who is best known for fast-moving action films from Taken to Colombiana. He is unveiling the film at the Toronto Film Festival in a World Premiere on September 12. They’ve given Deadline an exclusive look at the teaser one-sheet. The one on the left is Michelle Yeoh, who plays Aung San Suu Kyi in the film. Both of them were designed by Shepard Fairey.

I would hate the be the guy who ponied up several $ks to get the ALMOST EXACT same artwork thinking he/she was buying high-end / exclusive LA street art… that being said, kudos to “Shepherd” for recycling his old ideas over and over again and finding suckers to pay him for it.
LUC: This image is almost a decade old (ok so the gal’s different) and the world knows it. SUBWAY was cutting edge. There is some talent left under that belly I know it! Don’t let Europcorp’s stock bring you down with it… Maybe go tell Pierre-Ange you’re sorry or something…
Will Shepherd F ever do anything else besides this look? What’s good for walk the line is also good for “the lady” and also good for Obama???
And also good for everything else. Or bad. I saw his feed the children poster. Chinese communist propaganda posters vectorized with saturated colors. This is his schtick. Curious what he will do for a second act?
Note to Luc: You do know people will associate this film with Shep? The film has already lost cool points.
I really hope Luc Besson isn’t “best known” for two movies he didn’t direct.
Well, Luc certainly knows how to portray powerful women on film, Michelle Yeoh rocks and Suu Kyi’s story really does deserve to be told. Hell, if anyone can grab the attention of our over rebooted, franchised, and super-heroed movie going public he can (albeit on a platform release). I’m happy to see he’s doing an original story about a real woman. You go LB! I’m in for a ticket.
