In her first producing effort since leaving as chairman of the MGM Worldwide Motion Picture Group, Mary Parent has come aboard as producer of Pacific Rim, Legendary Pictures’ big-budget action film that Guillermo del Toro will begin shooting in November. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and Idris Elba star. Parent joins Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashini as producer, with del Toro also producing. Parent has been prepping the film for the past month. After exiting MGM, she started Disruption Entertainment and made a first-look deal at Paramount., But Legendary has plenty of movies prepping and they needed an experienced hand on the ground on location in Toronto. Parent’s Disruption execs, Cale Boyter and Luke Ryan, continue to develop projects, but Parent had the time and lends an experienced hand to a tent pole pic.

GDT and Mary Parent are a good combination.
Big budget.
Original idea.
Yay!
second that.
Thirded.
Charlie Daaaaaay!
Wondering if studio producers still receive a development fee of $25K per project they set-up.
If this is the case, I can certainly understand Mary needing to take a better paying job.
This producer/director combo will make “Pacific Rim” do “Hancock” type of numbers. Original idea + strong script + top notch effects/action, combined with an unfettered vision of two strong creatives=BLOCKBUSTER.
I love Mary. More power to her!
Does anyone know if Legendary are self financing this or co-financing this with Warner Bros?
I know that Legendary are eager to ‘do their own thing’ but starting by self financing a $250/300m event movie seems a tad on the risky (foolish) side to me.
I knew Pacific Rim’s budget was high, but is it really $250 to $300 million? I guess that puts GdT up there with Cameron in terms of getting insane amounts of money for an original, unbranded property.
Personally, I prefer del Toro’s more modestly budgeted films — Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos — to his larger pics like HELLBOY 1 & 2. But he’s definitely got amazing talent and a singular vision. I pray this works out for everybody.
