PBS has picked up Endeavour, a prequel of the long-running series Inspector Morse, to air on Masterpiece Mystery next year, which marks the 25th anniversary of the series’ 1987 premiere. The prequel — the title, Endeavour, is a reference to Morse’s first name — stars British actor Shaun Evans (Ashes to Ashes), who will step into John Thaw’s shoes to play the younger version of Colin Dexter’s iconic character. Set in 1965, the story follows the hunt for a missing schoolgirl, which draws Endeavour Morse back to the place that will ultimately shape and define his destiny: Oxford. “Inspector Morse was one of my favorite detectives,” Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton said. “Shaun Evans has a similar depth and quiet charm. I can’t wait to see his Endeavour.” Another Inspector Morse offshoot, the series Inspector Lewis starring Kevin Whately in the role he originated in Inspector Morse, also airs on Mastepiece, with four new episodes slated to begin Sept. 4. Written by Russell Lewis, Endeavour is a co-production of ITV Studios Prods and Masterpiece.

OHH sweettttt
I loved watching Inspector Morse growing up. Let’s hope that this prequel does him some justice!
This is going to set up nice for me when i pitch CBS: “Cannon: The Skinny Years” and “Barnaby Jones: Middle Aged Detective.”
Does this mean that in his next role he gets to play young Jack Regan?
John Thaw WAS Inspector Morse… as author creator Colin Dexter will gladly tell you, not to mention millions of fans worldwide. Prequels rarely work and even rarer that they’re the least bit better than the original.
Spinning off Inspector Lewis is one thing… this is just another bad money driven corporate mistake. Can’t they create something new and even slightly different for a change!
Agree 100%. No one can play Morse like John Thaw, and no one should be allowed to. I’d like to know what Colin Dexter thinks about this.

I like the Lewis spin off but this is just milking it for all it’s worth.
Oooh. Holy brand extension, Batman!
Seriously, though, I gotta wonder if the producers of this gig really know just how high John Thaw set the bar for the Morse character. Face reality, guys. John Thaw was possibly the best television actor of his generation in Britain. He left huge shoes to fill.
Shaun Evans does not have an easy task. Reboots of this sort are damned tricky to pull off. The story’s going to have to be impeccable, in order to let him fumble a little finding the character.
I’ll watch the first episode. After that, who knows.
Em bom português: Eu espero que seja exibido no Brasil.
Now in my bad English: I hope it will be shown in Brazil.
I love both series, Morse and Lewis.
Abraços
Thought tonights prequel to morse was excellent, would like to think that this is a spin off for a new series. Love `Lewis` too.

Watched it Sunday. LOVED it. Still thinking about it. Caught the young Morse perfectly. Can’t wait to see more. fantastic recreation of 1965, reminded me of that other fabulous show Life on Mars (eight years later in ’73) which caught the times perfectly. Love love love it!
