EXCLUSIVE: Matt Dillon has been set to co-star in Imogene, joining Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening in the indie comedy that started shooting this week in New York. Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are directing, and Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray’s Maven Pictures is producing with Anonymous Cntent’s Alix Madigan and Steve Golin. Dillon plays the eccentric love interest of Bening’s character. He claims to be in the CIA, but his behavior suggests he just might be crazy. In the Michelle Morgan-scripted comedy, Wiig plays a playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt in reaction to the triple-whammy of losing her job, getting evicted and getting dumped by her boyfriend. She hopes to gain sympathy from her ex, but instead is consigned to return to the home of her gambling addict mother (Bening). Dillon last starred in Takers and guested on Modern Family. He’d been expected to star with Brendan Fraser and William H. Macy in the Charlie Matthau-directed Elmore Leonard novel adaptation Freaky Deaky, but when Fraser dropped out of that due to personal reasons, the other actors followed, and that film will now star Christian Slater, Billy Burke, and Crispin Glover. Dillon is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Now that further plot details have been revealed for “Imogen”, this film sounds like a prequel to Kristen Wiig’s co-scripted “Bridesmaids”. Michelle Morgan’s script has long since been a “passion project” for Wiig, concurrently during the development of “Bridesmaids”. It may just be a case of the 3 writers (“Bridesmaids” co-writer, Annie Mumolo included) sharing a *similar taste in dogged hero storytelling* or maybe it’s just an unintentional, subconscious *bogarting* of plot details, BUT: Wiig’s character Annie in “Bridesmaids” had a cupcake business that went under, prompting her then boyfriend to leave her as a result, which forces her to get a job at a jewelry store that she is eventually fired from and, soon after, her roommates kick her out of their apartment; all this leads to Annie having to move in with her alcoholic mother. Wow. I guess a fake suicide attempt to get a boyfriend back in “Bridesmaids” would have been way too on-the-nose! Though, pretending to drive recklessly in front of your highway cop ex-lover in an attempt to get him to talk to you is…pretty darn close! Interesting.

When will Matt Dillon do a drama again? Remember The Outsiders and Rumble Fish?
He still looks great — let’s see that intensity again, Dallas!
“Y’ever been to…lemme see…Santiago, Chile?”
Jimmy: What in de fuck are you talking about? You sound coo-coo.
I coincidently ran into a woman playing Anette Bening’s maid, and it’s supposed to be hilarious…they wanted her in the movie so bad that they paid her rate well in advance. That’s show biz for ya.
Matt is one of the greatest actors of his generation, if not THE greatest. Hoolywood, as always, under-utilizes REAL talent preferring people like Pitt, Clooney, Brolin’s son, etc. What a shame. Hopefully, Matt will get the role of HIS caliber, some day. Too many of us are waiting.
