EXCLUSIVE: MGM has set Noah Oppenheim to write the script for War Games, the reboot of the 1983 thriller that has Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon attached to direct. Oppenheim, a former producer of TV news shows that include Hardball and Today Show, put himself on the map by scripting Jackie, a film about Jackie O that was set up with Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky attached to direct. At the time, it was envisioned he’d direct Rachel Weisz in the starring role, but that was before they split. The project is being produced by Aronofsky’s Protozoa banner. Oppenheim also scripted Maze Runner for Fox and Houdini for Summit Entertainment.
MGM made a deal with Gordon in June to direct the film. It’s one of several major remake projects for the reconstituted MGM, which also has Jose Padilha to direct Robocop and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to script Carrie – but the John Badham-directed War Games is one that seems particularly reboot-able. The original starred Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy as computer prodigies who finds a back door into a military computer program. They think they are playing games with the computer only to find they could trigger WWIII if the computer launches nuclear missiles at the Russians. In terms of computer games, kids were playing Pong back then; the level of sophistication with vidgames and the Internet in the digital age opens a wealth of possibilities, and Gordon will be given a wide berth to create a new take on the tale. The deal also reunites him with MGM toppers Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jon Glickman, who were at Spyglass when Gordon directed Four Christmases there. Oppenheim is repped by CAA and Management 360.

Sheedy isn’t a prodigy in the movie, I don’t think. I think it’s just Broderick showing off for her. (But my memory could be wrong.)
within 2 years…. computers will take over the world…people are so complacent to think nothing will happen within the pc dominion….what will end this world is a cyber pc attack that will result in worldwide anarchy….
did not the recent riots in England not show how vunerable the world is to absolute chaos? every society is a powederkeg waiting to xplode.
it’s coming…and we don’t need some movie to prove that.
Yeah, and it was called T2 (or more accurately isn’t T3 when the machines actually take over, I don’t remember as that film was so forgettable).
Why would anyone ever remake this? The cold war is OVER! This is an ’80s time capsule best referenced in a READY PLAYER ONE movie, not material for a REBOOT!
I don’t get why something as lukewarm as COWBOYS & ALIENS can scare Disney off something as potentially fun as THE LONE RANGER starring Armie Hammer and Johnnyh friggin’ Depp, but the PATHETIC box office numbers of FRIGHT NIGHT and CONAN aren’t scaring studios off making more boring ’80s movie remakes.
you are not wrong, Sheedy was just the love interest of the main character.
every single remake idea will produce a lesser film than the original…congratulations, shittywood
We can only hope as remake/reboots like Conan, Fright Night, and many others over the past year, and the upcoming year, continue to flop, that Hollywood will finally get the message that reboot/remakes don’t work in the majority of cases!
Simply hitting them over the head, and having the remakes flop, hasn’t given them the message yet, but eventually the bean-counters will catch on, and then we can finally get some new movies.
Assuming, anyone cares about movies anymore by then.
I have an idea. Wouldn’t “Wargames” be better if the kids were really sexy? And the guy took his shirt off and his abs are just ripped? And the girl just wore underwear and bent over in front of the camera a lot? And the Dabney Coleman character was played by Colin Ferrel? Now THAT’S a movie! Make Professor Falken black, and… uh… the Joshua computer is voiced by Carlos Mencia, but is a technorganic robot with beady eyes and a mouth, so it can emote, because the Joshua computer’s background story isn’t enough to move the audience. There. $800 million international. A full billion if the script makes sure nothing is ever done or said to suggest it takes place in America. To be safe, change the title to “Sexyback.”
Don’t be Sorry, you are probably right. And Hollywood is so devoid of original ideas or ideas of their own, they are probably on here reading the comments and just jotted down every plot point you described.
I have always thought War Games would be awesome to reboot. This could be good if the don’t screw it up.
Carrie will be in fine hands with Aguirre-Sacasa. I love reading his adaptation he is doing of Stephen King’s The Stand for Marvel.
Michael Kohut was the lead sound mixer on “War Games”. During the scene where the possible retaliation strikes occur, he decided to use almost inaudible puffs of sound creating an aura of emotion that won him an Oscar nomination for “Best Sound”. Best of luck on the remake…
PlotPoint is right. Sheedy wasn’t a “computer prodigy”. She was “the-girl-Broderick-was-trying-to-impress” so he changed her grade, she got made, he changed it back, she left his room and he re-changed it; then she helps him get to where he needs to go. But “computer prodigy”, no. And I also agree that this story seems to be quite re-bootable. W/the advances in technology in both gaming and defense, it seems like a natural.
Batman Begins and Casino Royale are reboots. This is a flat out remake. Get the terms right. Saying this project is a reboot doesn’t justify it being made, and the studio’s laziness to create original material
Shecky – scram, pal. Much to intelligent a comment for this forum. This group is made up of 26 year olds who think Michael Bay and Brett Ratner are directors instead of what they really are, producers. Catch my drift? Now move it!
Thank you.
sensitive bitch, great comment. totally agree.
i worked on war games from the very beginning and the fact that badham still gets all the credit for this is laughable. the film was completely developed, designed and cast by martin brest who was fired without cause and primarily due to a war waged by freddie fields on paula weinstein. the real story is one that should be told, but i’m not sure this is the proper forum for it. badham, who has never acknowledged brest’s contributions to the film, basically had the table set and all he had to do was enjoy the meal that was served to him. btw, brest’s next film was the hugely successful bh cop.
No, there was cause.
He was completely indecisive, and don’t forget you had that crotchety Leonard Goldberg breathing down his neck.
Badham was the perfect replacement because he is one of the more confident directors out there. Also, Badham was online at this time, being a CompuServe member from 1982.

Yea, cause wargames: dead code was such a rousing success…
But I suppose if you do a sequel, and it flops and nobody saw it, and you want to milk a franchise you might as reboot/remake it…
This movie won’t work today. The subject matter is old, and not cutting edge/visionary like it was in the orignal, which was a key to the original’s success. We all know what hckers are, what they can do, and what computers can do.
Bad idea. Real bad.
The big problem with remaking this movie is the lack of an adversary. There just isn’t the Soviet Union anymore. A great villian, one of the very best of all time, but she has retired.
Eagle Eye already ripped off the original.
Waiting breathlessly for the re-boot/remake of Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Sound of Music and The Longest Day. Obviously all new ideas have been exhausted by Hollywood and we can only look forward to old films being remade. Anybody interested in remaking “Birth of a Nation”? And they wonder why Hollywood is in such bad shape. Sure there are a few blockbusters, but most of the films are gong almost straight to DVD, and DVDs ain’t selling. Good luck when the economy really tanks and the studios exect people to shell out 10-15 bucks for a movie.
Another tired re-make of a well done 80′s picture. Tell me, in 20 words or less, why I should care about who’s going to get “credit” for something that won’t be anywhere near as good or as genuine as the original. While you’re at it, tell me why I should care about this re-make at all, given the fact that I can sit in my own living room, pop my own fresh corn, drink all the soda I want, while I watch the original on an HD TV as big as the wall itself that’s better than most of the small screens in to local 20-plex? This is no way to get people to buy movie tickets, folks. Somebody, anybody, tell me they can do better than this, please!!
Yeah, I’m not so sure about this. It was a moderately entertaining movie in its day and seems to be in constant rotation on numerous non-premium cable channels. There are many fans to be sure, but I’d hesitate to call it a classic.
The problem with tech-centric movies is they don’t play well years later. The tech in in the original WarGames looks antiquated by today’s standards. So what is the rebbot gonna do – have him start a global thermo-nuclear war from his iPad or smartphone? In 5 to 10 years, it will look equally silly in comparison.
Some sci-fi shows base their tech in a non-current fashion to avoid this problem – Star Trek (all versions), Star Wars (all versions), Battlestar Galactica (all versions) – you get the idea.
Having said that, this reboot just sounds like a bad idea and the work of a non-creative executive.
I’m so SICK of lame REMAKES!!!! People please, send a message to those Hollywood Producers and stop paying to see these movies! The only way they’re going to get the message if they don’t make money!
Great… let me guess… Justin Bieber will play David and Selena Gomez will be Jennifer. Maybe the robot will be voiced by Chris Tucker…
Hilarious!!!!
Chris Tucker saying “Would you like to play a game”
“Do you understand the missiles that are coming out of my silos?!”
After movies like The Matrix… i’m not sure this movie is relevant anymore
The campiness of the original is what makes it good. Trying to make it relevant now is just going to fall flat on its’ face considering how many more movies have gone further than this concept in recent years.
The movie that needs to be redone is “Watchers” and more in line with the best selling book it was supposedly based on. That film was *terrible* yet the book is named by many as their favorite Dean Koontz novel.
Let’s just remake EVERY movie from the 80′s…..
Why is this a “reboot” instead of a “remake”? I thought “reboot” referred to franchises like comic book characters and Jame Bond. There was only one War Games.
Another reboot? Why not, since “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “Superman” reboots did so well.
Another bunch of overpaid 40- & 50-something execs playing in a very expensive sandbox remaking a film they drooled over in their ongoing (yet increasingly embarrassing) youth. (Pssst, seen the returns for ‘Conan’ and ‘Fright Night,’ guys?) When will they ever learn? Originality is dead.
WHOOPS. Tough luck on Noah Oppenheim. His script for MAZE RUNNER sucks and JACKIE – guess what – wasn’t that great to begin with! So now he’s writing your crass and desperate action movie with the visionary director of FOUR CHRISTMASES and HORRIBLE BOSSES at the helm (“but his documentary was awesome!” – lazy exec). Have fun MGM! Congrats on the new capital investment, you seem to be spending it flawlessly.
