MTV has renewed freshman teen comedy Awkward for a second season. The news comes on the heels of the series, created and executive produced by Lauren Iungerich, hitting a series high 2.0 rating in persons 12-34 last week, up a whopping 21% from the week before. “The show is really resonating with our young audiences,” said MTV programming head David Janollari. “What I like about the show is that it first and foremost is a comedy but it’s also not afraid to be honest and emotional. It’s all about the voice of Jenna that Lauren Iungerich so brilliantly created, and with Ashley Rickards, we have an immensely watchable TV star who gives Jenna all the depth and humor and pathos and sympathy we’re looking for in a TV star”.
Awkward is less than a month into its first-season run, with seven more episodes left to air. Season 2 will debut in 2012. In addition to Awkward, Iungerich is also shepherding a comedy pilot for MTV, the recently picked up Dumb Girls. This is the second scripted MTV series to be renewed this summer, following the recent pickup of Teen Wolf for a second season. Meanwhile, Skins and The Hard Times Of RJ Berger have been canceled after one and two seasons, respectively. “I loved the show, I admired the writing and the performances, but unfortunately the ratings were not as strong as we wanted then to be,” Janollari said of last week’s decision not to renew Hard Times. Coming up is the premiere of Death Valley on Aug. 29 and a post-Video Music Awards sneak of I Just Want My Pants Back, and the October launch of animated comedies Beavis and Butt-head and Good Vibes.

Lauren’s the next Tina Fey. Genius with no limits, period.
Lauren is no, Tina Fey. Some of those episodes are play by play Easy A.
Forget Easy A, some of the dialogue is straight out of the Diablo Cody School of Made-Up Slang.
This show was in development WAY before Easy A hit the theaters. and ALL kids make up slang-that’s where it starts. Diablo Cody is amazing but she didn’t corner the market on teen speak- and this show deserves more credit than that. It’s good.
Yeah, but it would be better if the main character cared about something other than A Boy.
I want Skins.
Agreed w. T. Lauren really gets it! Solid young cast too for Awkward.
Fun show for teens. I think it’s a stand out this season for generation y/z. I hope they portray the adults in a bit more grounded fashion next season. Other than that – it’s a solid show. Congrats.
Cancelling my favorite show in the WHOLE FREAKING WORLD! The Hard Times Of RJ Berger! We just found out he was gonna be a daddy and nowe we wont get to see more:’/ Im sad now….KBye.
‘awkward’ is a good show. congrats on the second season pickup.
good to hear, I stumbled upon this show and actually really liked it, even though I cringe at the fact its on MTV.
Desi Lydic steals this show. Actually like this show. Its a lot better than RJ Berger.
Glad that they got the 2nd season pickup.
I love this show, although I am not part of their core demo (43 African American woman). I freaked out when last week’s episode wasn’t on my tv. I think that most people (old, young, white, black, Asian, straight, gay whatever) can relate to Jenna…..struggling to fit it in and discover who we are or what we will be…In the trickest place of all….high school!
Anson Williams should be directing in season two.
Should definitely extend the episodes for next season to be full 40 minutes (hour-long). As is, its only 20 (less than the normal 22), and it doesnt really play out like a half-hour sitcom, rather it feels more like a dramedy and would really benefit from the extra time to better develop the stories as well as other characters
I find the characters and situations completely forced and over-the-top. Nothing fresh or different. But I am not the demo for this, so it makes sense.
Awkward is funny, well written, and clever. I think Jenna is relatable, and many girls growing up have had those awful moments in life where you just want to crawl under a rock and die. The Matty/Jenna relationship is very spot on. What girl hasn’t put herself in that situation.
My husband and I agree that the show should be an hour long. I’m a little older than Jenna (More like the parents age) but I do enjoy watching it. After all, a girl growing up is just a series of awkward events.
I am 28 and I absoultely love “Akward” its an awesome show its funny and relatable. My brother and male cousin who are 18 and 21 LOVE the show as well. I am sooo glad it is going to season 2. And i REALLY hope they extended the episodes to 40 minutes too! 20 mins is tooo short!!!!
I love the show! I just recently started watching and watched all twelve episodes already. I can’t get enough of it! I love Jenna, Matty, Jake and Sadie. They portray high school life as it is – I think a lot of people benefit from this show. Especially those still in high school. I can’t wait for the second season! Please let me know the exact date the show will air in 2012.
I love this show. This is a good show for teens to watch and learn what life could be like.
I am 15 and sometimes I feel just like jenna, highschool really makes you want to die
I Love this show… I think the only thing that needs to change is PLEASE MAKE THE SHOW AN HOUR LONG… AND MATTY AND JENNA GET BACK TOGETHER
This show is awesome, I love that the mean girl is only liked for her parents money, instead of beauty. Pretty girls can be dorky too! Go jenna.
Ok shut because that show was so freaking boring and talk about awkward its way better than that okay
I am happy matty and jenna broke up because he didnt want no one to know about there secret relationship and so happy shes with jake because hes so cute and he is not afraid to hide there relationship like matty did
I love this show. Im obsessed. I CANNOT wait til season two. Im so exciteddd but idk when its supposed to start. Kinda salty
When is awkward coming back on? That show is FUNNY!
I love this show!!! I agree with it needing to be longer but other than that no complaints! I love Maddi and Jenna. And of course Saddie is hilarious! Oh and also love the parents
