The season premiere of MTV’s mega-hit Jersey Shore‘s Italy-based Season 4 attracted a massive 8.8 million total viewers and an 8.2 rating in persons 12-34. This was the most-watched season premiere of the reality franchise, up 4% from the Season 3 debut. It was MTV’s third-most-watched series telecast of all time behind two Jersey Shore Season 3 telecasts. In the 12-34 demo, the Season 4 premiere was on par with the Season 3 opener.

wow, why do people still watch this garbage? Ill admit Ive seen 1 season and it was the 2nd one. After that I don’t even bother with it.
And what’s really funny is that if you tuned in last night, you’d see that it’s the exact same everything as the season you watched. Like everything. Same conversations, Snookie making out with Mike, the DJ guy making out with a roommate – just the exact same. But I watched it as I guess the Italy factor peaked my interest.
8.8 MILLION?!?! REALLY?? Think about that…that means 8.8 MILLION americans sat around last night and thought, “you know what would be a good way to spend time? Let’s watch the Jersey Shore.” I love you America, and always will, but I don’t have to like you right now…ugh
Gotta agree here. I never watch this show, but I did see the season opener. I swear their stupidity sucks you in if you’re not careful.
I usually don’t like it when people trash people for watching a popular show. But I gave Jersey Shore a shot to see what the hype was (it’s impossible to escape it) and it was one of the most unappealing shows I have ever watched. The entire cast came across as fake and obnoxious. It was the same boorish behavior every week. Just unwatchable. I don’t begrudge people for watching it. But we can do better than this. Seriously. The lack of talent and redeeming qualities of this cast was exposed when that “Situation” character tried stand up at that Comedy Central roast. Painful.
because after a hard day working for the man, you just want to come home and just not think! Jersey Shore is for the employee who works hard and needs a break from reality.
why do people even watch reality tv is the question? it’s not even reality. it’s amazing how America is in love with it’s reality tv, it’s not culture, it’s trash. there is no art in trash. pump your fist up high America, you lay off teachers but hire idiots for your entertainment, so inspiring for the next generations to come. pathetic.

Why is it surprising? Yes the show is trash, but it is hilarious trash, and the point of watching TV to the average viewer is to alleviate boredom, and this show is honestly funnier than half the sitcoms out there…
People watch it cuz it’s hilarious! Are all of you saying you exclusively watch high concept, cultured, educational programming? Sometimes you want to turn something on, pay half attention to it, socialize with whomever you are sitting with and grab a few laughs AT these idiots. It’s not like the viewers watch out of respect. You detractors don’t understand ENTERTAINMENT. It doesn’t all need to be intelligent, some of it is just for fun.
i tuned in for the italy factor. i’m sure i’ll get bored after the next episode or two. anyway, it’s a joke, check – your – brain before you sit on the couch television show. it’s not WW3 people.

I don’t think it’s the same scenario. Jersey Shore exploits drugs, sex, and cursing. Three Stooges doesn’t exploit that stuff at all. In Three Stooges you have three great physical comedians making you laugh with what they do best. It has nothing to do with making somebody dumber but rather the things that they do on Jersey Shore makes it seem alright to do for teenagers when it really isn’t. To be brief, you can sit a two year old child down and have them watch the Three Stooges. You can’t sit a two year old child down and have them watch Jersey Shore.
Television is ENTERTAINMENT – MTV has never pretended to be National Geographic or The Learning Channel (before that was all reality too). If you are not entertained by Jersey Shore, don’t watch it. 8.8 Million people enjoy it and do exactly what TV was made for and that is pure entertainment, not education. Scripted TV is a total bore and everyone involved really needs to get off their hierarchy about how wonderful it is. Seinfield…a show about nothing, Family Guy….a show about an idiot…Cheers….a show about people who are in a bar all day and night….Its always Sunny…a show designed to shock and awe are all scripted TV Success but Jersey Shore puts all that in one pot and suddenly they are the worst creatures ever. Give me a break.
So to you all of scripted TV is a total bore but you find The Jersey Shore to be entertaining? I think you’re desperate to defend a show that can’t hold a candle to scripted TV shows that are more entertaining than The Jersey Shore can ever be.
