How much financial damage does News Corp believe it might endure as a result of its News of the World hacking and bribery scandals? Looks like it depends on what audience executives are addressing. This morning the company sounds concerned in the annual report it filed at SEC – where there are legal consequences for lying: “(W)e are not able to predict the ultimate outcome or cost” of law enforcement investigations in the UK and U.S., it says. The proceedings “could damage our reputation and might impair our ability to conduct our business” in ways that “could affect the Company’s results of operations and financial condition.” But hold on. Last week, Rupert Murdoch told analysts on News Corp’s quarterly earnings call not to worry. “It’s important to note there’s been no material impact on our operations outside of the closure of the News of the World,” he said. “Our broad, diverse global business is extremely robust today. … The drivers of our business are intact and our position is strong and our future is promising.” Indeed, he added that “I’m feeling very confident. I’m shocked and appalled at what happened in one small corner, which is the News of the World. …But everything else is fine.” Which Rupert should we believe?

I wouldn’t be too concerned or take seriously the “annual report it filed at SEC”
It’s just being efficient, dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.
What I pay attention to is the facts, and what Rupert Murdoch told analysts on News Corp’s quarterly earnings call is in line with the facts. Besides the UK government has their hand full with the riots and the hacking and bribery scandals are so passé now.
I hope fox goes down. Murdoch deserves it and so does the studio.
So do a lot of people. Unfortunately, money and power works in mysterious ways in this country, rarely resulting in outcomes benefiting America or Americans.
Don’t worry, News Corp will keep buying its own stock back with all the money it saved from BSkyB falling apart.
That will keep things going for a time…while all slowly unravels….
This is NOT the way Rupert envisioned his remaining years on this planet. This would break most people’s hearts, but one must have a heart for it too be broken…sorry, Rupert.
Tom, is it possible you are my identical twin separated at birth?
I wish they would just take them down and get it over with
Be that as it may…’Dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s with the SEC.’ … ‘where lying has legal consequences’ in facts omitted, omissions in facts, otherwise, lies. The financial facts are carraige disclosure to everything else.
I would love to see Fox dissapear, for the obvious “Hate mongering and Vitrolic attitudes toward our president! And Murdoch’s greed, to say nothing of Rush L!
What concerns me are the jobs of the innocent and shows like Glee. I’m sure other networks would jump at the chance to pick them up, at least I hope so!
Thanks
Edmund
You want FOX news to disappear and Glee to survive? Enough said!
I keep noticing in news reports where Murdoch is saying how the “investigations” might hurt business…not the crime, but the continued uncovering of it. That is what it sounds like. It’s not that we did unethical and illegal things, but these darn investigations could hurt business.
Check out The Independent, the UK newspaper online. It’s a sticky wicket for old Rupert. All the employees he stabbed in the back are providing explosive details of the hacking scandal. Murdoch loves to diminish the importance of NOTW, yet this is how he derived his power. This paper, as well as The Sun turned elections in a Rupert friendly way. Most in danger is James Murdoch.
The Murdockss and their lawyers cant separate what is Legally right and what is Morally right
