Mark Urman’s Paladin made a U.S. distribution deal for Boy, the Taika Waititi-directed film that became a sleeper hit on its home turf in New Zealand. Set in 1984, the film focuses on an 11-year-old (James Rolleston) who grows up in the remote Maori community of Waihau Bay, obsessed with Michael Jackson and imagining that his long-absent father (Waititi) is a world traveler. When dad returns, he’s a lovable loser who served a stretch for robbery. They try to come to grips with one another and develop a relationship. The film played in the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

New Zealand has put out some great films. For such a tiny population, they have some great artists. I’m looking forward to seeing this.
Umm were actually not that small…I mean were still in the millions.
So glad this finally got distribution! One of the best films at Sundance last year!
Aussies and Kiwis makes great comedies. I can’t wait to see this one.
I don’t know about Australia….
Whale Ride 2?
Seriously, though, this sounds like it could be good.
Not at all Whale Rider 2. It is good. A Maori community – yes; different story and style altogether.
Yay Taika!
That’s great news! I saw this film at the Sydney Film Festival it was clever and funny, love Kiwi films, another good film doco This Way of Life – good looking kiwi horse whisperer with cute kiwi kids growing up country kiwi style.
Taika Waititi is a New Zealand gem. Genius. You either get him, get it, or you simply do not. Yes, and that makes you an egg… So far I get it all. Taika, I have been waiting for the release of BOY since the premier back in NZ. I’m glad I will be able to enjoy it soon.
Great movie and true to the way of life in that era. I hope there is more to come from Taika.
