Back in June, Deadline revealed that Fox 2000 had acquired the Robert Harris thriller novel Fear Index, about a scientist who uses a revolutionary system of computer algorithms to trade on the volatility of the world’s financial markets. His hedge fund is wildly successful until he is targeted by an intruder who breaks into his home. At the time, I’d heard that Paul Greengrass was attached to direct, and his reps at CAA denied it. I wrote it anyway. Now, Harris has said in an interview for his soon to be published book that Greengrass is indeed going to direct and the filmmaker’s reps are now acknowledging it’s true. The novel will be published next month in the UK and January in the US. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Jenno Topping are the producers. and Harris is scripting it. Greengrass next directs the Somali pirate pic A Captain’s Duty with Tom Hanks starring for Sony Pictures.
Robert Zemeckis has officially dropped out of the Warner Bros drama Replay, and the studio is trying to put the Jason Smilovic-scripted film back together with another filmmaker. Zemeckis exited because he has finally committed to direct Denzel Washington in the Paramount thriller Flight.
In the John Gatins-scripted drama, Washington plays a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker. When his plane malfunctions and a crash seems imminent, he saves the day with some heroic flying and manages to land the plane with minimal casualties. He’s instantly hailed as a hero, but as an investigation into the cause of the crash unfolds, it becomes clear that he was flying under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The film is the pilot’s journey as he is encouraged to wear a hero label he thinks he doesn’t deserve, while the pilot’s union and airline try to keep the facts under cover because of the high stakes involved. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing.

Replay is the best script I’ve read this year. Now maybe they can get a filmmaker who’s last movie wasn’t Mars Needs Moms! DS
The best script you read all year had a main character named Whip Whitaker? Yeesh.
How about you read the comment and the article first before commenting yourself? Whip Whitaker is in Flight.
Flight’s main character is Whip Whitaker, not Replay’s.
Uh, just so you know, Zemekis did not direct “Mars”, just produced it.
Paul Greengrass should direct replay starring denzel w!
I thought the script of FLIGHT ws interesting, though I don’t know who’s going to see it. I loved REPLAY but would much prefer Ben Affleck to direct. Now WB should go back to Ben for him to star and direct. As for Paul Greengrass, I’m not sure I’d want to see a Somali movie. Paul take the other one first.
I hear they’re going to Johnnie Depp and Tim Burton for Replay to replace Lone Ranger.
My friend who works at imagemovers says that Robert Z is still developing replay for nexxt year and is talking to Brad Pitt Robert Downey, jr and Julia Roberts.
REPLAY is one of the best books ever written – but no movie will ever come close to doing it justice. This project has seen more overhauls and had more lovers than a Beverly Hills housewife. The best way to experience REPLAY is to read it (the novel, that is).
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Zemeckis direct the Jim Carey Christmas Carole? Denzel, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Surely there was someone, how do we say this, more current you could have gone to?
Let’s see…Forrest Gump got Hanks an Oscar, along with 7 other Oscars. Bob Z’s live action track record is excellent…That’s what he needs to be doing, not the Mocap stuff that had him sidelined the last 10 years. Denzel is in great hands!
But is the commercial airliner the size of the Chrysler Building? No? Tony Scott spits on your silly FLIGHT script.
Oh goodness, someone just make REPLAY already.
Great story.
It doesn’t need NAME actors. Stop waiting for someone HUGE to commit (who is too old to play the part anyways) and just go with newbies. The concept is provocative enough. It stands on its own. Geez.
Denzel already played this role, it’s called Courage Under Fire.
Get out the Dramamine if Greengrass is directing. Can we chip in for a tripod? Handheld is a great way to fake that you know how to direct a movie.
The green light red light that now has taken over the film business makes the business of movie making seem so fickle. But there are damaging repercussions to this start and stop thinking. Below the Line people really get killed by this. A person commits to working and suddenly some executive business decision or disgruntled director pulls the rug out from under them. No thought is given to the consequences. What a frickin business!!

Robert Zemeckis is so 1992. Warner Brothers should get a younger hipper filmmaker. What’s wrong with Hollywood that they keep on trying to use old guys who only want to make old fashioned movies. Haven’t read Replay but heard it’s pretty great. So why put an old fashioned guy in charge to helm it? It’s time for the new guys. Open your eyes Jeffrey Robonov there’s other people banging on the door. Let them in for a truly innovative movie.
Lets get Michael Bay to direct Replay and Flight.
