In a bizarre development that I can only imagine will be very embarrassing to Sirius XM’s morning man Howard Stern, a bootlegged copy of the JJ Abrams-directed Super 8 has shown up on content-thieving websites. The print is watermarked with the Paramount Pictures logo, and “H Stern” in the right-hand corner. Film companies and networks like HBO routinely personalize advance screeners to safeguard against piracy. There is widespread speculation the leak came from a DVD sent to the show.
I see that already, the Sternfannetwork.com features an “over/under” asking commenters to decide if Stern got $50,000 for posting the film. That is preposterous. Stern receives advance screeners so he can talk knowledgeably about upcoming films he likes, and because he does superb interviews with directors and stars. He will be upset if his show breached a trust with Abrams, a longtime friend who once thrilled Stern’s daughters by putting them on his series Felicity. That is something a dad never forgets. I recall that Stern interviewed Abrams when the director made the rounds to promote Super 8.
I’m told by studio insiders that Paramount indeed made a copy of Super 8 for the Stern show and that one was leaked. The studio has already conducted its own investigation. Right now, they have no indication that anyone from Stern’s show was involved, and don’t know how the copy made it into the hands of pirates. It will be difficult to figure that out, because the movie opened June 10 and the disc would have been sent a long time ago. But if the disc was passed among Stern show staffers after the boss watched it, and it fell into the hands of someone with the audacity to post a copy that bore Stern’s name, I wouldn’t be surprised if Stern will want his own investigation. This potentially hurts his show and its credibility with studios. More than anything, this is a cautionary tale to those of us in the media who get early screeners (especially during Oscar season) and then have everyone begging to borrow the DVDs. Super 8 has completed its stateside theatrical run, and the $50 million film has grossed over $185 million worldwide. But having a copy blasted on the Internet potentially dents the film’s ancillary fortunes.

This definitely hurts Sterns show. If he could ever fire anyone heads would roll. I suspect nobody else there will be seeing screeners again.
Looked like an awful copy.
Da da dummy
Ma ma monkey
Fa fa fired
Re Re Retard
Stern is ALWAYS yelling at the studios for NOT sending him screeners….logically saying “Why would I bootleg a movie?! I just want to watch it so I can talk about it on the show and promote it if it’s good.” He’s brought this up A LOT. Heads WILL roll if someone from the show did this.
Howard has said many times on his show he wants to destroy screeners after he gets them. The studio makes him give them back. So I think it is less Howard’s fault then it is the studio that has the DVDs floating around. Howard was right to want to shred them.
Plus, Stern isn’t exactly an unusual name in Hollywood. Could be someone else’s copy.
Yours incorrect. It’s entirely responsibility to maintain the whereabouts of his screeners
But if he has to mail the screener back to the studio, then it is out of his hands in the mailing process. A postal employee could have intercepted the screener.
unless some dick who doesn’t like stern in the first place, got a copy and added the name to the movie, which is extremely eazy to do…..
Big ups to Howard Stern if he did leak it. We need more of this so hollywood collapses. Peace
word.
an excellent lesson for anyone with screeners. i’m sure Stern will launch an investigation.
Your last few sentences are key…this already did its domestic theatrical run and its wrapping up its foreign run. The idea that this would hurt the bottom line at this point is laughable. As far as ancillary profits, every single movie has a DVD-rip on the internet before the DVD is available to purchase. Hate to say it, but its commonplace now.
This is an embarrassment for Stern and I bet they’ll be able to pinpont the exact person that ripped it eventually, but I also bet he will continue getting screeners going forward. He just won’t let them out of his sight.
This certainly isn’t amongst the ranks of Attack of the Clones or Wolverine in terms of damaging leaks.
Stern talks about how he gets screeners and shreds them when he finishes watching them. I guess he forgot to this time.
Not only will this incident hurt Stern’s show, but it could also cause him to lose a lot of credibility with the major studios who want to have him promote their movies on his show, and it have the potential to do very serious damage to Super 8′s future DVD & Blu-Ray sales.
If he can’t trust his own staff, then how can the studios trust him with their screeners? No matter who’s at fault here, one thing is certain, whenever Stern conducts his own investigation into the matter, this is going to get ugly, folks, especially if it’s found out that someone on Stern’s staff leaked the screener onto the internet.
What makes this particularly interesting and that him not getting screeners for a lot of movies is an actually bit on the show. He’s ALWAYS complaining about it and swears he barely gets them and has to beg and plead and whine to get them. Back to actual screenings like he got in the past.
I think you have made a little to much about a thread on sternfannetwork.com and the $50k remark. There was a thread posted by one guy with one comment….hardly a “featured” thread…
Why so quick to defend Stern? If it were some random person accused of leaking the tape, you and the powers that be would have him/her in a prison cell within 24 hours.
Random person doesn’t get a chance to talk about it for 4 hours a day on the radio. Random person isn’t a celebrity. No one knows anything about a random person, thus can not logically defend that person’s point of view.
i hope he talks about it on monday. if he comes in on monday (he takes tons of vacay)
hahahahahahahah
Wow…that’s something Howard talks about all the time…how studios don’t send him copies of movies enough… I’m sure he’s pretty livid at this point. One thing Howard is very conscience of is his relationship with Hollywood and studios. Should make for an exciting show on Monday..since they’ve been gone on vacation for a week.
Actually, Howard has complained in the past about screeners with his name on it.
Um, remind me why we’re supposed to care? Those that are looking to see a bootleg copy of the movie would have already downloaded a cam. Most theaters aren’t showing it anymore, and the DVD/Blu-Ray isn’t out. So again, why does anyone care? Who exactly has been “hurt” by this?
I know the MPAA would like nothing more than to say this incident will put 11 million hard working people out of work and will cause the entirely film industry to teeter on bankruptcy, but yeah, like we believe anything they say. And I bet they’d also love to bring in the FBI, ICE, SWAT, or any other governmental organization to find the terrorist that undermined all that America holds dear to its breast.
Yawn…
You are wrong there , movies only coming out next week in the UK.
true movie lovers dont download cam rips
Hurts Stern’s show? Have you ever listened to Howard? Howard loves controversy. I truly doubt that this is something he concocted as he is respectful to the studios but at the same time he is loving this press.
How will this hurt the DVD/BD sales? Anyone who was going to see this in theaters already has. Anybody who has downloaded this would have when the DVD/BD rips come out a month ahead of time. Let’s be honest this doesn’t effect it anymore than normal piracy would have anyways.
My guess is it was Jared (known on the show as “The Rat”) He’s likely acting on the orders of he higher ups. He already shown that he’s not above purposely sabotaging the show. The way he berates anyone who calls him on it is disgusting.
Beware Howard, the Sirius executives are pushing a full court press.
God Speed Howard Stern! And always watch your back in that den of vipers.
.-~-*! TRUE FAN FOR LIFE !*-~-.
They should do away with screener DVDs anyway. I get a ton every year for the Oscars and most of them end up in a landfill (several go unwatched as well). Studios more and more are having critics access the shows on a password-protected website, not sure why they can’t do that more often.
That said, Super 8 was lousy IMO.
Why bother giving this clown a screener. His audience is a fraction of what it was on terrestrial radio. And even though he is a knowledgeable fanboy how much weight does his opinion carry anyway. Even when his show was free I’d see the films I was interested in despite his opinions and I bet most folk that listen to him now do the same.
Stern is mostly old news and relegated to a niche crowd nowadays. The “King of all media” is now the “used to be king of all media” even though he never ruled anything outside of his radio show timeslot when it was on free radio.
^^ jealous
Rusty, just goes to show that you do not know Jack s. Stern has way more listeners than most tv shows even though he is not on testicle radio.
You know Stern’s audience is the same size as Letterman, Leno, Conan, etc. And none of their audiences pay to watch them.
If this was leaked back in May, this might be a story..
I bet it was former newsman Steve Langford, who just abruptly quit the show a week or two ago. He probably made so much money on the pirated copies of SUPER 8, he’s now able to retire.
But seriously: This is a stunning scandal in so many ways. Howard will go berserk at the thought that any of his staff members would betray him by leaking out a screening copy of a movie lent to him by the studio; Howard will go nuts knowing he’s angered J.J. Abrams, a longtime friend of the show who’s been interviewed by them half a dozen times (including a 1-hour appearance to promote Super 8; and Stern will be unbelievably upset that the studios will now cut him off from getting any future advanced copies of movies & TV shows. Somebody may even wind up getting arrested over this.
If nothing else, this just shows you that no matter how successful you are in radio, there’s always a potential disaster that can knock you down, when you least espect it.
This is a huge, huge mess. I’m going to be riveted to the radio Monday morning. I just hope Stern doesn’t avoid talking about it.
