EXCLUSIVE: Reese Witherspoon has attached herself to star in Wish List, a Disney comedy about an overly imaginative little girl who makes ten wishes at a wishing well. They don’t come true because her coin never reached the bottom and eventually she loses her inner child and becomes a full grown and ambitious career woman. Some 25 years later, the coin is dislodged, falls to the bottom and she has to deal with the ramifications of 10 kid wishes coming true all at once. The script’s being written by Randi Mayem Singer. Wish List is being produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, who most recently produced Secretariat for the studio. The comedy was initially developed as a vehicle for a male star, but now it’s being retooled for Witherspoon, who was last seen in Water for Elephants. She next stars in the McG-directed This Means War opposite Chris Pine and Tom Hardy for Fox. Witherspoon’s repped by CAA and Management 360, Singer by ICM.

Worst film idea. Ever.
I just vomited on my desk. Why, Reese, WHY?
That’s a hit. Easy. Love the idea or hate it, you can’t dismiss it. Budget can be whatever depending on if the kid wishes for a unicorn that flies and all that and families can see it together. Wish I thought of it and was getting paid to write it. spec-wise, I would not be too inspired to write it, but if you’re getting paid after just pitching it, then that’s great. Congrats.

the script is awesome
Reese’s career is going to pieces. First she can’t open WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, and now she’s doing a rehash of BEDTIME STORIES meets 13 GOING ON 30.
Come Witherspoon, don’t let your career wither away by continually choosing bad projects. You seriously want to be in business with Disney, creator of such recent classics as OLD DOGS?
This sounds a lot like WHEN IN ROME, except that was someone dealing with other people’s wishes coming true.
I think this sounds fun. Reese is always enjoyable in movies like this.
Considering all my childhood wishes usually involved ponies, puppies, castles, cool vacations and marrying a handsome prince I think I’d be fine with that. /scene
I love Reese, and this sounds like it could be great… ala Enchanted. Silliness vs. grounded depends on what the wishes are. Also nice to see a girl get a guy’s role for a change.
I like the concept too. I actually think these are the kinds of movies Reese Witherspoon should be doing right now (not Water For Elephants). She needs a big box office hit like Sweet Home Alabama or Legally Blonde.
The concept is recycled from other films, no doubt. They could put a more original spin on it by having the wishes made by Reese’s character when she was a younger woman……say, college age? That way the material could be slightly more mature. With the wishes being made by a young girl, I’m concerned it’s going to be campy and childish.
Like other posters here, I don’t know why she’s doing this one though.
This sounds horrible. This one is going to bomb just like her last few movies have. I think she is definitely on her way down career wise.
Yeah come on, you may not like it (it’s nothing I’d personally go see), but that’s a slam dunk of an idea.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, thanks for that…
Sounds like something that could be charming, depending on the execution. haha. I love all these reviews based on a two liner.
Please. Reese is really, really smart and has great taste in scripts and projects. I can’t imagine her taking something that’s “childish” or “campy” on the page. How it ends up once it hits the screen is another matter.
Love reese, and loved her in water for elephants, which has done just great for its genre. I think this is a good fit for her.
it’s a cute enough idea if not very original. Reese is iffy for me. I was forced to see Water for Elephants and that was about as bad as it gets. Yikes that stunk. Then that drivel How do you Know. WTF?
She sure is spunky though.
Haters gonna hate, me usually being one of them, but this idea sounds like a hit in the making if they don’t fk it up.
Andy Licht and Jeff Mueller, and Howie Mandell had a project with this same idea set up at Fox for years, it was/is called SEVEN WISHES.
Years ago. 20 years ago maybe? Michael J. Fox was once going to direct and star in a film called 30 Wishes about a guy who has every birthday wish he ever had come true on the same day (his 30th birthday). Script was by Elisa Bell (Vegas Vacation). For Universal and Producer Jon Avnet I think. It was quite good but then Development Hell ate it and it never got made. Too bad it didn’t happen as it would have redefined Michael J. Fox’s career. He was perfect for it at the time. It would have been his BIG. If my memory of the script is clear, you could easily film it today pretty much as is. Maybe now it’ll get another look.
Will Reese Witherspoon ever make another good movie? Like ever? Like what are we, in year six or seven of her making nothing but crap films?
I think she needs to return her Oscar the way Reggie Bush had to return his Heisman Trophy. This is ridiculous.
I see the CAA and/or Disney people are hard at work on this board spinning this. This sounds terrible. The last time a film like this did well was in 1987 with BIG. No other film that adopted this premise has done well, why would this? Reese isn’t exactly packing them in anymore.
Reese should have done that PTA film. Whoever convinced her not to, instead opting for crap like this and THIS MEANS WAR, may have killed her career. She has top notch representation, but they are not serving her well at all. Her career has gone completely downhill since she moved to CAA.
I remember 30 Wishes, and frankly, this sounds like a better version.
When in doubt, do a Disney comedy. It worked out so well for Eddie Murphy and The Rock.
Well, at least Sandra Bullock had a mid-career uptick. I’m not sure if Reese, as awesome as she was in the early part of her career (see: Legally Blonde) has the chops for an equally successful comeback. I wish her the best … but am not too sanguine on the prospects for her renaissance.
One has to wonder if the problem is Reese’s thespian range or, as I suspect to be more the case, the debacle of her handlers not being able to align her with more promising, fresh material. I know it is hard for aging actresses out here in LaLa Land, and I imagine that if Reese were a decade younger the lead role in “The Help” , for example, would have been hers for the taking….
bobby the saint, please, Sandra Bullock doesn’t have a strong acting range. She didn’t deserve the Oscar for The Blind Side.
I agree. Reese definitely has a much wider range as an actress than Sandra! Sandra can’t do an Election and Walk the line. So using bobby the saint’s argument, if Sandra had a mid-career renaissance with all the talent that she has, then Reese would most definitely have one too. The problem is Reese is a couple of years behind a “mid-career”. She’s a veteran but she’s also only 35! Sandra’s 45 when shed had proposal/blind side. But I think this is a crucial time in Reese’s career so she really has to pick really good projects from this point on.
I think the idea. Unlike others I won’t crap on it till I read the script. Why are people so scared if Reese does something that is very commercial. Johnny Depp, who used to be a small film only type of guy, has been in series of huge commercial vehicles. Big deal.
You assume this film will be commercially successful. I’m not sure what you base this off of. Films like these, 13 Going on 30 and that Zac Efron/Matt Perry film to name two, almost never do well.
As someone above wrote, the last time a film like this actually did well at the box office — and there have been so many others that tried — was Tom Hank’s BIG and that came out almost 25 years ago.
I agree that Reese has bad representation.
