Sarah Silverman, Whitney Cummings and Chelsea Handler will now be under the same roof. After a bidding war, NBC has snagged Silverman’s single-camera comedy project with a hefty put pilot commitment. The comedy, a pet project of Imagine principal Ron Howard, drew strong interest from all networks it was pitched to, with two, NBC and ABC, offering major commitments. Loosely based on Silverman’s life, the untitled single-camera comedy stars the comedian as a woman readjusting to the single life after a decade-long live-in relationship. Silverman is writing with Dan Sterling and Jon Schroeder, who were writer-producers on her self-titled Comedy Central series. Silverman, Howard, Sterling, Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producing. At NBC, CAA-repped Silverman joins two other female comedians known for their raunchy, no-holds-barred standup: Cummings, creator and star of her own eponymous comedy series on NBC, which launches this fall, and Handler, who is behind another upcoming sitcom on the network. This marks another high-profile sale from 20th TV for NBC under new entertainment president Jennifer Salke, former EVP at the studio.

If we are talking cool funny women it’s more like Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be under the same roof. Whitney Cummings is okay but Chelsea Handler is just not funny.
Comedy is subjective. We’ve been through this before – Just because someone finds Chelsea Handler funny, doesn’t mean she is or isn’t, it means that the specific person thinks she is. Chelsea sure has made a lot of money off of her books and TV shows for someone who is “just not funny.”
Sorry, your wrong, this is not subjective at all, Chelsea Handler is not funny.
Cnote, what you just said is wrong.
Not sure if you are aware of the difference between facts and judgments.
I agree; Handler is a complete bore and looks like she needs to take a bath. Silverman on the other hand is a genius and looks like everything on her body would taste and smell like the most incredible things you’ve ever experienced with those two senses.
No, sorry, you’re* wrong.
No, it is indeed true: Chelsea Handler is NOT funny, merely offensive. To many, that passes as comical wit.
Came here to say exactly this. I think Whitney is being overpromoted but it has the potential to be funny and last. Chelsea Handler is the least funny person out there and Sarah Silverman shouldn’t be in the same sentence. Lots of strong females on that network though, and that’s always a good thing.
SO GLAD to see a woman writer getting a pilot deal!!!
Sexist much?
Actually no, that wasn’t a sexist comment. But thanks.
I’m sure if NBC gets one solid show out of the three it’ll be worth it to them. Sadly, I don’t see any of the three making past a season.
Completely agree. Silverman’s humor is too discomfiting for network viewers. She’d be better off on HBO. Chelsea, we can handle, although again, there’s not much demand for what she has to supply. Whitney — who the heck is she?! If it looks like hype, it probably is hype. The previews alone for that show should be enough to sink it. Formulaic nonsense.
Sarah Silverman on network television is a big mistake. Sarah is far better suited for cable if the show is to reflect the Sarah we all know and love.
Glad to see Ron Howard finally has something to keep him busy…but?
yeah she really killed it on cable, i mean that show is still on the air, season 8? oh wait…. it’s not funny and people can’t stand her for more than 10 episodes.
HA HA! LOL!
EXACTLY! what i was thinking. She isn’t funny (my opinion).
NBC must be looking for a filler or someone else it’s forking up the majority of the financing to get this deal to go through.
The word of the day “eponymous”
Good Luck Sarah! You’re a funny lady, and you got a talented team.
I hope the new bunch in there at NBC treat you right –
THATS WHAT SHE SAID
So let me get this right. Sarah Silverman’s cable show that was “loosely based on her life” was cancelled last year because it couldn’t deliver ratings for Comedy Central – a network that often relies on screening comedy films so bad they couldn’t find distribution when they were made 10 years back – but now two networks get in a bidding war for her new show that is “loosely based on her life”. And the same people who wrote and produced that low rated vehicle are on board to help out again.
And people wonder why NBC is hemorrhaging viewers. Unbelievable.
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.”
I call that being a diversity writer.
Actually, Comedy Central couldn’t afford to keep the show on. The viewership was there, and, I think, will likely follow, at least initially…
“the viewership was there, but they could afford to keep it on?”
um… ‘splain that one, ace.
I think if you “have the viewership” — that means you have enough viewers, to attract sponsors and keep the show on. If a show “has the viewers” — that means it’s making money.
also, her show was Not that expensive. It wasn’t Tosh.O cheap, but it wasn’t expensive either.
It’s really too bad that Whitney and Chelsea’s shows are so awful. No clue about Sarah’s yet.
Whitney and Chelsea are prime examples of why some idiots say “women aren’t funny.” Stop pushing these two!
Laura Kightlinger’s show was funny (cable). I guess you have to be younger, though, for anyone to care.
Loved that show! IFC should bring it back.
I believe that the last NBC show that R Howard and Imagine were high on was Friends With Benefits. That says all.
yeah, wow, are you really saying that the comedy central series was loosely based on her life? in what world? it must be one where the reality we know doesn’t exist. or at the very least one where some moron who is monitoring nbc’s viewership doesn’t understand absurdism at all.
Who’s funnier than Sarah Silverman? No one. I mean, except dudes.
Kristin Wiig.
Melissa McCarthy
Rachel Harris.
Tina Fey
Paying Sarah Silverman to go on NBC is like paying Adele NOT to sing. She will be handcuffed by Broadcast standards and even with Greenblatt now there – the network
will note her to death and she will be miserable. She should go to FX or HBO.
FX filled their comedian quota with Louie and Louis CK’s budget for that is basically pennies and nickles. Still hilarious though.
I can’t speak for everybody else but when I say somebody is not funny it means I watch their stuff and it doesn’t make me laugh. That’s all. Simple. Handler has clearly been successful. Personally I don’t get it but good for her.
She has a very sharp wit. Sorry she is funny, and you are either not in the target audience or possibly her great success makes you insecure??
Bill…you couldn’t be more right!…and let me add these are three of the most unappealing, crass woman who unfortunately are on television. They think if they say ‘vagina’ and ‘penis’ three times in a row, their hilarious. wake up NBC..woman hate these woman and they’re a large part of your audience you’ll alienate. Will play real werll in the midwest and the south. The sad part.(along with Playboy” ..Ron Howard attached himself to this crap!
Sarah’s book “Confessions of a Bed Wetter” was an excellent read. She was not afraid to really investigate the painful experiences of her past and did so with humor and sharp insight. If she can weave those kinds of real moments into her sitcom then she’ll have a hit. Good luck, Sarah.
Maria Bamford is more funny than all 3 combined.
That is true but I think her act could not really be made into a show. She does however deserve more attention.
maria B. is indeed, as funny as she can be.
Ben Garant – kiss ass.
Thank you.
… ?
G — you, sir or madam, are a bitter little f#*k.
Stating a positive opinion about a friend who’s work i enjoy is not being a kiss ass. I’ve never worked with Sarah, except for a few benefit shows. I need nothing from her, she needs nothing from me — I just think she works very hard, and she’s a funny chick, and so I’m wishing her the best.
There are so many mean little anonymous people on the web, lobbing turds at people who are actually out in the world doing something, trying to do something… You miserable little sh*ts add nothing to the world, or to the conversation.
So many cowards on the internet – THANK you for calling one out!!!
Though I am personally not all that into SS, and can only take her in bits and pieces, The Sarah Silverman Program was pretty excellent in its brief run. I do wonder if it had a lot to do with the hilarious ensemble that surrounded Silverman like Brian Posehn and Steve Agee and also that Dan Harmon (Community showrunner) also helped create the show. That show was very underrated and very well-written.
Ron Howard is not my favorite movie director but he seems much better knowing what is good in the TV medium, Arrested Development was the best thing he ever was involved with since Apollo 13, so I am guessing he sees potential from Silverman’s previous run on TV. Sterling and Schroeder both have backgrounds that include The Sarah Silverman Program so it has that going for it.
Who ever believed Sarah Silverman, a hack comedian who was only known for her escapades with Jimmy Kimmel, is even relevant in today’s society? Apparently, NBC must think so but again, will it result in a ratings winner? Answer to that question would be no and done!
man, you clearly don’t know anything about sarah’s career, talent, or comedy in general. she’s the opposite of “hack”… (do you even know what “hack” means?), and she was well established long before she met kimmel.
I think she’s wonderful!
FINALLY! Getting a comedy with a comdienne who can do single-cam comedies right AND on NBC!
This is the network trying to right the wrong that is “Whitney” – It’s just a shame they didn’t do this sooner. Silverman following the Office would make complete sense. Whitney following the Office will be a complete disaster.
Sarah Silverman is a vile anti-Christian, liberal, secular Jew who tries to be a comedian. Her blasphemy and mockery of Jesus is legendary and fully intended to be offensive. She’s exemplary of Hollywood’s exclusion of “gentiles” and their contempt for America and it’s values. I see bad things coming her way in the future. May God have mercy on her soul.
