Sony Pictures has targeted Aug. 2, 2013 as the release date for a sequel to The Smurfs, even though the studio at this point has only locked Jordan Kerner to be the film’s producer. The notion of making a sequel is a no-brainer after the original nearly beat the pricier Cowboys & Aliens in its opening weekend and has so far taken in $135 million worldwide. It opened No. 1 in 23 offshore markets last weekend.

I knew this was going to happen. Stupid Smurfs
Obviously, Sony was not prepared for a Smurfs sequel. The Smurfs success has taken Sony a bit by surprise…but, certainly, it was a pleasant surprise.
ah, actually dim one, all they did was wait to see he 2nd week numbers, calculate drop off, then greenlight..since all the offices etc are still open, they just turn the hard drives on and go…fully prepared..anticipated even….
Bravo to the SMURFS team. Job well done.
>the original nearly beat the pricier Cowboys & Aliens in its opening weekend
In a real court of law, if, say, real lawyers like Ally McBeal and Matlock went toe-to-toe and head-to-head and took it to the mat, could Ally really prove COWBOYS & ALIENS beat THE SMURFS on that weekend?
I love SMURFS!!! yesssssssss
Stop putting dates out before the movie is even being filmed
It is called being prepared. People with real jobs, schedules, agendas, and deadlines do that sort of thing.
This is normal silly. Obviously you haven’t ran a business where you release products that have been planned first through budget.
This is excellent news. The absolute ingenuity and excellent craftsmanship at work in the first Smurfs film shows what vast opportunities are open to this franchise. The Smurfs is easily the best film of the year. Such amazing writing and directing deserves to be explored further.
You are so dry I thought you were serious for a second there.
Topher Grace – the perfect film for ICM to jumpstart your new film career. Look what HAROLD & KUMAR did for Neil – it led to the SMURFS. You could be hosting a variety of awards shows soon. Hurry up and seal the deal.
That isn’t a date, it is a warning to Jon Favreau.
The terrorists have won.
This smurf smurfed my smurf reflex. I’m about to upsmurf my smurf. Gargamel wins again. Thanks Sony.
It’s like a never-ending game of Monolopy. Studios owning dates to beat others. July 4th would be like Boardwalk.
Nikki: Is on top of this. Amy Pascal new this One was a Blue Ribbon Winner, all along.Whom ever is The Blogger John Doe, Hire that person SONY.This is a Healthy Franchise and SONY is movin on UP Globally.
Kudo’s to All,

“SMURFVISION”.
Doc Sinda
Smurfs, the new Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise!
The new norm of putting up dates before the movie is out is a good thing. A while back most were complaining about good movies not having sequels
Knew all along if this film did well, a sequel was in the works and sure enough, it is.
