With Fox Sports poised to officially confirm this morning that it has signed a multi-year deal with mixed-martial arts league UFC for coverage on Fox and FX, Spike TV announced the end of its UFC franchise, The Ultimate Fighter, which is expected to migrate to FX. The Ultimate Fighter season 14 in September will be our last,” the network said in a statement. “We are increasing our commitment to distinctive, original series that we own such as Auction Hunters and Bar Rescue which are delivering on our goal to reach a broader audience. Our 6-year partnership with the UFC has been incredibly beneficial in building both our brands, and we wish them all the best in the future.

Hey, remember when SPIKE TV was going to do original scripted? Where are those series? There was a whole announcement in Oct. and then I know they were going to continue down that road. Is it that new VP who nixed this ambition?
What’s going on with this network, anyway? It was supposed to grow and it seems to be falling into awful reality oblivion.
This entire network is a sinking ship with no identity. They were supposed to be dedicated to entertaining guys, but have made no real effort towards that goal. The real problem, I suspect, is that the network is run by women and gay men, filtered by evil and useless lawyers and topped off with that ubiquitous MTV Networks arrogance. They should clean house and start from scratch. Maybe they could even hire some young guys from their target demo.
Am I the only one who thinks that Spike TV is a really badly managed brand? First they lost WWE, now they had to give up UFC. The scripted stuff was awful so far… And they really want to stick with weak reality TV that I could get on any other network? What a mess!
It’s the short term approach. They will try for cheap original reality and hope they get ‘Jersey Shore’ success. Probably not the best strategy to work with lottery odds.
New VP Sharon Levy is really sinking this ship. She came in and ever since then it’s been a mess. She doesn’t know what to do with the network, and quite frankly shouldn’t be the one running it. Seemed they knew what they were doing months ago before she came onboard.
Sharon is smart and well liked and knows how to extract the best from the community. She’s got a tough remit programming to the hardest to demo in TV. In fairness the network has had a lot of success on her watch. Now, admittedly, it faces challenges. But it only takes one hit to replace the loss and return the momentum. Far too early to count her out.
Good luck, Sharon!
