The writing had been on the wall for George Lopez’s late-night show on TBS. There was speculation that the network was planning to cancel the show last year, but Conan O’Brien insisted on Lopez sticking around so he is not perceived as the guy who pushed Lopez out. Lopez Tonight got a stay of execution, but now the show, originally developed by Telepictures as a syndicated talk show, will end its two-season run tomorrow night. Lopez Tonight has not been doing well in the ratings, especially after moving to midnight last fall to accommodate Conan, recently averaging 400,000 viewers and a 0.2 18-49 rating for original episodes. There have been rumors that TBS had tried to make the show broader and less ethnic. For one reason or another, both late-night shows with minority hosts, Lopez Tonight and BET’s The Mo’Nique Show, bit the dust within the past two weeks. Here is the official statement from TBS: “TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight. Thursday will be the final episode of the show. We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”

good riddance.
Completely agree. This guy is NOT funny.
Just heard from a friend at Conan show. They’re scared there- calling their agents scared.
Wait, scared why? Isn’t Conan doing well…? (I stupidly thought he was)
Nope. Conan’s ratings are terrible. They are just slightly better than the Lopez show. I was a big fan of Conan’s show, but I stopped watching several weeks ago because he basically does the same show every night. They do the same bits every week. It was way too repetitive and boring.
I read 700,000 to Lopez’s 400,000, which you can read as generally meh for cable, or 75% higher than Lopez’s audience. And apparently Conan clips do well online while Lopez didn’t do anything, which again, depending on your point of view, can be good or bad.
RobM: I don’t know where you read that but my guess is you didn’t read to closely (or made it up) — Conan is barely doing any better at 11PM than Lopez was, and they’re paying Conan WAY more than they paid Lopez and Conan’s show costs WAY more to produce. Conan show is without a doubt less profitable for them than Lopez’s show. And if your numbers are comparing Conan’s ratings at 11 to Lopez’s at 12 then that’s just dumb. Lot less people watch TV at midnight.
Lopez has never been funny, in any format. He is a toxic, charmless presence. This show should have been cancelled long ago.
your fucking stupid
yes he is otherwise he wouldn’t been so successful
Conan,s is no better his is just a red headed white boy he is not funny at all TBS get him off !
i did not feel like i should be watching that show…felt like it was for the hispanic population. But i noticed Conan has shut the hell up crying that Leno screwed him since Conan screwed Lopez….Leno just had much better ratings than conan did…plain and simple and conan is not funny at all…Lopez is a riot just not on this show he wasnt, just was not a good mix with his personality maybe best suited for doing a sitcom not a late night show… i am sure someone will scream i am a racist because i said i didnt feel comfortable watching this show….hey it is what it is….get over yourselves and stop making everyone out to be a racist and get a life, maybe lopez is the racist since whites didnt feel comfortable watching this show.?
But good luck Lopez! he is a funny guy ad i hope to see him in a sitcom soon his comedy is not being used right now and that is sad cause the guy is a riot….
karma
Karma’s a bitch. Divorce the woman who gave you one of her organs? Lose your show.
Karma?…for one there is no such thing.
second, he’s still single and rich, and it was her idea to get divorced
The reason she divorced him was because of his cheating ways. Good for her. And George has some issues…mostly from his upbringing…he is simpy not the family type. Look at his latest interview…he discusses it.
I guess he wasn’t white enough for TBS’ liking. Shame.
Really? Maybe he just wasn’t funny. Maybe people that don’t speak spanish got tired of his “jokes” that were in Spanish. Maybe his ratings were sh*t. I would pick all of those over him not being white enough for TBS.
You mean the Tyler Perry network??
Your ignorance is showing.
Wasn’t white enough for TBS? Tyler Perry sitcoms and movies dominate the programming at TBS. It’s all about the ratings. Falsely accusing people of being racist is racism.
I am only referring to their feedback to George, in which they asked him to be whiter. I was inthe studio audience and heard it myself and found just as offensive as you do.
As for speaking Spanish – George barely speaks any. Little known but true fact. He has to rehearse any he’s used on the show.
It’s got nothing to do with color. This guy is an angry, controlling miscreant, who is universally despised by all who have worked with him. He’s a professional “Anti-anything” that he doesn’t believe in; has been spawned by him; or, is in his image and likeness. Good riddance. What we need is humor not anger and hate. It would be nice to have a ‘Hispanic Comedian” that is inclusive with his humor, rather than pissing on his auidences’ sensibilities.
Thank you TNT!
Reminds me of Lopez’s statements from a few years ago, when he took digs at Jay Leno and said he was a terrible talk show host. Karma is a bitch, George.
Louis CK is half Mexican, maybe that’ll work for you?
Exactly! Unfunny WHITE GUYS averaging eleven viewers a night get to stay on the air indefinitely! Couldn’t agree more.
Idiot…
not sure why you believe race has something to do with it. i suppose, using your logic, that conan isn’t white enough for tbs either. his ratings are shit, too.
Get shit head Conan off where is he funny at i will not watch i used to watch lopez i will not watch TBS AT ALL!!!!!!!
It has nothing to do with race. George is not and has never been funny and his shoe was over scripted.
Funny as hell, the cancellation that is! Another late night host bites the dust and Lopez recently admitted on Letterman that being at midnight sucks so I am sure he will have loads of fun words to say about TBS and Conan now.
The curse of Coco. The man is just not funny.
This truly is a shocker. Lopez is a really funny guy with talent.
@poundsand you did not like him?
Wonder what will replace him
Hope they get another talk show worthy enough to follow G-D aka Conan
How long before Gorge Lopez cries racism again like the last time he got cancelled?
He never thought, “Perhaps I suck at this TV comedy thing.”
santa, seems like you’re the one being racist. he might “suck” at this comedy thing in ur eyes but enough people like him that his abc show ran for years and continues its successful run in syndication. u don’t know what ur talking about. Bad santa!
Reality check! The only reason George Lopez’s ABC sitcom lasted as long as it did is because Sandra Bullock was the producer and ABC didn’t want get her riled. The wasn’t even remotely funny and neither was his sorry excuse for a talk show which couldn’t get any halfway decent guests because there are talk shows with higher ratings they’d rather be booked on than his.
Basil, they kep his sitcom on the air so Sandra Bullock’s feathers wouldn’t be ruffled? Have you seen a lot of product from her production company going to ABC? None. That is so far from the truth. The sitcom had good (not great but good) ratings and always built on it’s lead in. Even when they moved the time slot every single season it still built on it’s lead.
You do know the show is averaging 2million in its reruns on NickAtNight (or some other station/programming block – I’m Canadian, can’t recall what it was exactly)… right?
Okay, 2M – so what? (And I think the 2M is heavily divorced from reality anyway…)
Compared to what?
Family Guy, American Dad, Robot Chicken, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Adult Swim?
Any/all of which crush the Lopez reruns in 18-49 (and probably P2+ too).
And which not coincidentally crushed the Lopez talk show as well.
It is simply better business to slap a comparatively cheap Family Guy re-run on in Lopez’s slot – cheaper, with higher ratings.
Adios, Lopez.
The Lopez sitcom was horrendous, laughless, flat and facile. A waste of a talented cast. I’m glad they cancelled it, and I’m glad that TBS has made the right call on the talk show.
Oh, Tara, how is it racist to predict that someone is going to play the race card?
So predictable you are… also Lopez did play the race card during his monologue.
Actually, you are the racist one Tara.
BTW, he does suck at the comedy thing. Just because he sucks does not mean he also does not get more chances to try & improve.
Dane Cook & Jamie Kennedy are two more examples that follow this trajectory.
Right. Anyone who calls out someone for being racist is actually the racist. That sounds like the thinking of a racist to me, santa.
You’re hatred for minorities comes bleeding through your denials of your hatred for minorities. Just like your Tea Party you so adore.
You’re probably sitting on your front porch with your shotgun on your lap as we speak.
George Lopez already played the race card. He made a joke in his final monologue stating that he got signed on to do another Smurf movie. So then he said something like “So I got some work for being blue, but got fired for being brown.”
I love George Lopez and I wished I saw him when I went to see a late night show over the summer.
Ever heard of Tyler Perry?
They used a laugh track. You could tell George had no confidence in his material.
So Jay Leno takes Conan’s spot. Then Conan takes George Lopez’s spot. Carson Daly better watch his back.
SOOOO let me get this straight. Conan throws a FIT a little baby hissy fit about Jay Leno getting his time slot and show back, even though Conan got a $20 million dollar payout. He goes over to TBS, pushes Lopez out of his time slot so HE (Conan) could have it and subsequently puts a nail in the coffin of Lopez Tonight. He did the SAME thing that was done to him. The difference is George Lopez and his staff are not getting millions of dollars to go away, they are getting NOTHING. Conan is another example of a crybaby talent who doesn’t like it when the suits are against him but will use the suits against anyone else at the drop of a hat. What a jerk.
You’re an idiot. Conan refused to do the show unless George was on board. And it was George who encouraged Conan to come join TBS. Get your facts straight before you go blindly creating fictitious material to suit your less than ideal intellectual notions about Conan.
George Lopez only supported Conan because he was forced to by TBS execs.
TBS threatened to fire Lopez if he wasn’t on board, according to the New York Post.
http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/was_conan_welcome_faked_vOvBmMm6Ki0v74etsN05WO
People say nice things all the time.
Conan always referred to Leno as “his good friend,” even though he couldn’t stand the guy.
Conan also said he was thrilled that Leno was moving to 10 PM, when that move was announced.
Conan is a liar, just like Lopez.
Interesting detail in that NY Post piece Jon linked to above, about Conan having it in his TBS contract that if the Lopez show is cancelled, Conan’s production company gets to set up a show in that timeslot. I wonder if that’s true. We shall see soon enough.
No, YOU’RE the idiot. George was on board for Conan stealing his timeslot as much as Leno was about Conan pushing him out of the Tonight Show (albeit temporarily). George was on Letterman recently complaining about how much he disliked being pushed to midnight.
This is the second time that Conan has pushed someone out of their job and/or timeslot (first Leno in 2009, and now Lopez). Conan is hypocritical asshole who is now getting paid back with terrible ratings. He now averages a 0.5 on TBS, only a tenth of a ratings point higher than what Lopez got in that slot last year.
You need to get your facts straight and be less of an idiot, rather than just blinding lapping up whatever talking points that Conan and his PR team are creating.
You’re funny. Leno went on record, on television, telling Conan that he could have his timeslot in five years time. There is VIDEO of him saying that. Look it up. It’s not that hard to. I mean you know how to use google right? If not, then you should probably just stick your tail between your legs and cry yourself slowly to sleep. Conan received the show per deal by Leno. NBC didn’t think Leno’s ratings would still be AS strong as they were in five years time. NBC decided they didn’t want to lose him. It was NBC’s fault.
Conan REFUSED to go on TBS and steal Lopez’s slot. HE HAS SAID SO several times on record. And if TBS forced Lopez, how can you fault Conan for it? It would be TBS’ fault. But of course people need to blindly blame someone, they go to the easiest scapegoat imaginable depicted by the bigots at NBC.
For the record, I like George Lopez and I feel horrible for him. But people depict Conan as the bad guy in a business deal. Even without Conan, Lopez was bound to get cancelled.
Miffy, you kind of have a point. I find it odd that Conan didn’t get as much heat as he should have for pushing Lopez out of his slot.
Maybe George can blame his ratings on his lead-in…
1. Conan took the Tonight Show, wasn’t funny, and bombed. NBC wanted Leno back – blah blah.
2. TBS was looking to get rid of George in the first place. George was told to act encouraged that Conan was coming and Conan’s “lead in” would keep his numbers up in the mid-night slot.
Somehow we must find a way to blame George Bush and Jay Leno. Conan’s obnoxious and not funny, same with Lopez. If you are white, black, Asian or Latino and you are not funny – you are going to loose your show.
Lol, so Conan is obnoxious and not funny, but Leno isn’t… Jay Leno is possibly THE least funny person to ever call himself a comedian.
And it wasn’t the fact that Conan’s ratings were down that made them want to put Leno on at 10:30, it was the fact that LENO’s ratings were down when he was on during primetime. His show was literally considered “The Biggest Flop EVER” by Entertainment Weekly. And when LENO became a crybaby over people not watching his show and with NBC feeling stupid for canceling five weekly series to make room for a daily flop in their primetime schedule, they decided to try to push “Tonight” back and essentially make it “The Tomorrow Show.”
Conan got outa there, and went looking for other stations to keep not only himself, but HIS STAFF employed, and was offered a job at TBS, when he refused to do to Lopez what Leno almost did to him, Lopez called and told him to come to TBS, maybe the network made him, but that doesn’t mean Conan knew, he took the job and started doing a show which is at least seven hundred times funnier than Jay Lamo’s show…
And you can pul out the card and ask why it gets lower ratings, but if you do, I shall be forced to ask if you honestly think that “Joe Millionaire” was better than “Firefly”?
Conan did it to help his staff?! He screwed his staff, you moron. Gave people barely any money after they’d uprooted and moved from New York, many of them with families. They endured seven months of unemployment and ZERO INCOME while he took the big payout and had his PR flaks act like he was sharing the wealth. Get your facts straight, Jack.
JohnlnDC….sigh. You must not work with Talent or PR for that matter. Do you think that a little fish like Lopez had ANY other choice but to support Conan? Really? If Conan was SO pro being on TBS why didn’t he just take the midnight spot? He had the leverage at the network. It’s show business and if Conan would not have been such a baby about the whole Leno thing. I wouldn’t hate him but hearing someone cry and cry about losing their job and getting a 20mil payout in this economy only to take a job from a Talent and his staff with NO PAYOUT is a hypocrite and a jerk.
When the change was made, George’s audience plummeted 40%.
I’m sure TBS wasn’t the only network to offer Conan a spot. There were many broadcasters and networks who were rumored to be in the fold, including Fox and Comedy Central. It’s been well documented that Conan didn’t want to do it if Lopez wasn’t okay with it, and he was. I love how this quickly into a Conan bash-fest, when it’s clear that none of you have any of your facts straight.
I just want to thank you for stating the truth in the matter.
Prax, I know you’ve been hearing this your whole life, but wow are you stupid and naive. Also, how does someone get so much wrong in so few sentences?! One: NOBODY ELSE WANTED CONAN. You think he would have made the embarrassing move to descend into the bowels of TV and do his show on Channel 364 aka TBS if he’d had a better offer? This was it, the best he could get. At least do a google search before you reveal your stupidity to all. Yeesh. Two: It fascinates me that some people are so naive as to think that Conan really gave a crap about what happened to Lopez. It was all about not making it look like Conan was doing the exact same thing to Lopez that he’d just bawled Leno did to him. Lopez did what he had to do to keep his show. Give it a day or two before Lopez tells the truth about what happened. Though of course the Conan-Cult will still deny it.
*sigh* You’re blind as the rest of them aren’t you Anonymous?
Blind to the beauty that is Conan the Wonderman? Yup, guilty as charged.
Read all of the posts above you. You are just spilling all the PR rubbish, none of which are true.
nobody else wanted Conan…….he did the same thing to George that he accused Jay of doing to him. He is such a classless act.
I’m wondering how long he will last, his ratings are awful. Like Katie Couric, nobody wants to pull the plug!
’m sure TBS wasn’t the only network to offer Conan a spot. There were many broadcasters and networks who were rumored to be in the fold, including Fox and Comedy Central.
Do yourself a favor. Read Bill Carter’s the War for Late Night. Or try any of the multitudes of ink written on the subject in 2009. Then come back and talk intelligently to us. Fox wanted Conan in 2001, and again in 2004, but in 2009, their affliates were threatening to riot if they gave him (or anyone else not named Jay Leno) an expensive talk show.
Comedy Central? Hah! They had a stable thing going with Daily Show and Colbert, they weren’t going to screw it up with a super-expensive Conan show.
Again, learn how to read.
In this history of TV, there’s never been a more unfunny untalented freakish-looking late night host who ALSO is universally hated by his own writing staff and network. Hope to see George performing frequently at a national tour of all Baja Fresh franchises.
I don’t know about his talk show but on his sitcom his writers were very fond of him.
No they weren’t!
No, they really loved him. Especially the ass kissing, hack, show runners on the last season. Loved him? Ta loca, loved him.
Who cares if the writers were fond of him. I am sure personally he is a nice guy, but as a comedy talk show host, Lopez sucks. So does Conan. Two years from now we will be talking about Conan being gone.
Just blame George Bush and Leno for everything!!! It’s Leno’s fault!!!
JohnInDC I only mentioned that his writer staffed like him because someone started a post saying they all hated him. Just setting the record straight. Read above to Mortyfailsagain’s comment. That is all.
My point is the subject of this story is Lopez cancellation, not his likeability. We all have our opinions, favorites and preferences. The facts speak and as I know it – NBC gave Conan the Tonight Show and told Leno (in 2004) to take a hike. Conan bombed on his own accord. Ended up at TBS (I personally do not think other networks wanted the damaged goods) taking Lopez spot. Conan was projected to produce a large audience and help keep Lopez afloat. Once again, Conan is not producing the numbers. The first cancellation is Lopez and two years from now we’ll be talking about Conan. I am sure Lopez is an extremely nice guy. So is Leno.
Baja Fresh franchises? What a racist piece of turd you are! Were you pressed for time and thus forgot to also comment on Morty being Jewish? Worst of all, you dump your racism in there like it’s totally fine and acceptable. And for the record, I know three guys on that show, and all have told me separately that Lopez is one of the better people they’ve worked for and they get along with him fine.
Thanks for weighing in, tom johnson.
Oh no… where ever shall I go now for poorly executed ethnic comedy (likely stolen from another comic)?
No justice in this world, I tell you. None.
Talented? That’s your opinion.
I’ve been to 4 Lopez tonight tapings, most recently this past Monday and they most definitely do not use a laugh track.
I do think that he just didn’t have a broad enough audience. I’m sure that Hispanics were his biggest market.
Be honest his ABC show was funnier than late night show good riddance for guy who dump his wife after she gave him one of her organs
He seems a nice enough guy, but is absolutely not funny. I’ve tried any number of times to watch it, and have never even chuckled.
I always wonder what powers that be deem someone funny or otherwise talented when they are, obviously, not.
Lopez has a terrible lead in right now. TBS should cancel Conan’s show and air reruns at 11PM…they’ll probably get more viewers and save millions.
Conan brings in decent ratings. As stated, I like George, but he’s just not cutting it for Late Night.
If by decent you mean average to below average, then you are correct.
Esaul, I can’t believe you stopped jerking Conan off long enough to type this. Conan’s ratings SUCK. That’s a fact, bro. He gets beat by Chelsea regularly. The Hollywood Reporter just said in a story that Conan’s ratings are “below expectations.” You think TBS was planning on a 0.4 demo when it bragged about charging advertisers “network rates because this is a network show”? Enjoy your hero now because he ain’t gonna have his show much longer. As to your earlier post about Lopez wanting Conan to come to TBS and being thrilled about getting bumped back to midnight, boy you dumb!!!
Conan Truthers, the few that are left, crack me up. I grew up watching Conan in late night, but his act is tired now. He moved to cable, had a chance to mix things up and change how late night variety shows are presented, but he’s doing the same old schtick, and now it’s watered down.
You’ve just articulated the reason why Conan failed when NBC gave him the big chair at the Tonight Show. He took the exact same show he was doing at 12:35 and expected TTS audience to watch it, along with his already-established 12:35 audience.
Sadly, that wasn’t going to happen. The two audiences aren’t remotely the same. The earlier audience has one set of expectations; the later audience has another. Conan was given a golden opportunity to recreate his show to reach a broader, more mainstream audience and he refused. He kept on doing the same-old, same-old and to no one’s surprise, he failed. Not only didn’t he bring his old audience up with him to the earlier time slot, the audience that was there fled in droves.
He blamed it all on Leno. It wasn’t 100% Jay’s fault. Conan should have looked in the mirror a bit more.
Okay, enough bullshit. Here are some facts. Lopez averaged 910,000 viewers at 11pm. Conan averaging 710,000 this month. Case closed. This is from an Associated Press story on the cancellation:
Lopez’s total viewership dropped 40 percent in its second year, from an average of 910,000 nightly viewers at 11 p.m. ET to 543,000 at midnight. In August, the audience has dropped to 391,000.
“Conan” has been drawing slightly more than 1 million viewers for the season, just 13 percent higher than Lopez did in his first year, Adgate said, citing Nielsen Co. figures.
For the first part of August, “Conan” is averaging 709,000 nightly viewers. During its debut month, November 2010, O’Brien’s show had about 2 million nightly viewers.
I am so glad your seeing the same facts I’m seeing! One thing I must add is how much cheaper his show was compared to Conan’s. I read a report that Lopez was being payed $3million as a host while Conan is being payed $12million. And right now TBS is freaking out because they invested all this money into Conan, about 3 to 4 times more!, and expecting something better. That’s why TBS has bought CBS’s Big Bang Theory and has being trying to do a joint thing with CBS for sports.
When will Conan get the same news?
I like George, I have nothing against him. But he just didn’t bring in the ratings compared to Conan.
Esaul said: Lopez just didn’t bring in the ratings compared to Conan.
Esaul, I hope you’re a tbs employee, i really do, because otherwise where is this stuff coming from? Superfan? That’s just sad, dude. Conan’s ratings today are just about exactly what Lopez was doing at 11 pm. If you’re comparing lopez’s ratings at midnight to conan’s at 11, well, duh, midnight shows do worse because less people are watching. did u really not know that???
conan’s a ratings bust, a revenue bust, and most surprising of all, a pr bust for tbs. chelsea gets higher ratings for a show that costs about one-twentieth to produce. all tbs has gotten out of the conan show is two emmy noms and they paid about a billion each for them. for that kind of money they could have convinced david chase to revive the sopranos for them. would have been much cheaper on a per nom basis.
Chelsea Lately is kicking Conan’s butt right now.
Only 20% of Conan’s Twitter followers are actually watching his show.
Conan fans are actually discussing how boring his TBS show is.
Yet you don’t hear that in the mainstream media.
Why isn’t Deadline reporting the problems with Conan?
You’re lying.
Because those are opinionated pieces and points of view, not facts?
It is a FACT that Chelsea Handler (and the Daily Show, for that matter) are easily beating Conan in the ratings.
“Because those are opinionated pieces and points of view, not facts?”
Those aren’t points of view, those are facts.
Let me go through it line by line.
“Chelsea Lately is kicking Conan’s butt right now.”
That’s according to Entertainment Weekly.

“Only 20% of Conan’s Twitter followers are actually watching his show.”
OK I go this wrong, the correct figure is 25%.
Conan has 3,613,880 Twitter followers.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Conan has 911,000 viewers.

Applause to you, Jon. It is refreshing to see someone make a statement on these boards and then back it up with facts. You have the heart of a journalist, if not a philosopher.
Ah, the silence of a fool being confronted by an irrefutable FACT. Nothing sounds sweeter. Way to go, Jon!
If the show was easily available to view online (like at Hulu or YouTube, not friggin’ TBS.com) and was shortened to like 20 minutes (who has time to watch a boring hour long talk show these days?), Conan would get a lot more of his Twitter followers watching. I like Conan, but never remember to actually turn on TBS and sit through it. This isn’t 1994, it’s 2011!
Steve Smooke’s fault. Made a terrible deal.
The funniest thing about this show was TBS saying the cancellation was a “difficult decision”.
damn I knew this was going to happen. ever since the first show I said to my GF this show isn’t going to last hes sucked sooo bad .. i had to turn it off .. he does stand-up so well and would sell out shows but now he says those same jokes on his show over and over and over .. maybe this is a good thing for George. Good Luck Buddy
His opening monologues were TERRIBLE — very “muggy” and pandering. Maybe that brand of big, unsubtle, pop-eyed comedy is some people’s cup of tea but Jesus Christ I find it to be unwatchable.
Hey, Conan is a minority too.
Sometimes what works as a sitcom doesn’t work as a talk show. The George Lopez Show for ABC was a work horse no matter where ABC moved it. It might just be talk shows don’t work for some people.
Try putting Tim Allen in a talk show setting? won’t work this is one of those times. He needs to get good writers and come up with a sitcom.
