Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA.
The not-altogether-surprising intense protest sparked by ABC’s announced axing of its long-running soaps All My Children and One Life to Live demonstrated to ABC Daytime president Brian Frons that “we actually did a good job (promoting and nurturing them) for all of these last 40 years,” he told Deadline privately during a TCA lunch designed to promote one of the soaps’ daytime successors, the food show The Chew. “I think we’ve spent 40-plus years trying to keep the soap-opera audience happy. So in an odd way, (the outcry) is actually good. It’s just sad that we don’t have a solution.” However, a deal with producer Prospect Park has been cemented to relaunch both soaps during first-quarter 2012, and there’s been talk of enlisting a second production partner in cable television as well. But that remains uncertain.
Frons said that after the Prospect Park deal fell into place, All My Children‘s producers were forced to scramble to make the series ending more open-ended rather than final, since the series would now be continuing on after all. (All My Children is scheduled to leave ABC on Sept. 23; One Life to Live in January.) He added that the cancellations became necessary due to diminishing returns at the network. “We were at that point where we had to sit and look at what we were doing, and see if there were different opportunities for us in terms of serving a bigger audience. We looked at what was happening on cable — in the food space, the lifestyle space, the talk space, the reality space — and we just saw a very large audience and an opportunity.”
During a panel session promoting The Chew before lunch, a critic asked executive producer Gordon Elliott if he was worried about the online movement to boycott his show. The gregarious Aussie replied, “Look, I completely understand how the viewers feel, and I enjoyed those soaps too. But I don’t control the process that made that change. And while I’m sympathetic, I’m also greatly relieved to hear the shows are moving online. I hope the (fans of the shows) give us a break, and if they sit down for five minutes (and watch), they’ll really enjoy us.” Co-host Clinton Kelly was then moved to add, “I’d just like to go on the record that I love Susan Lucci so much. I think she’s fabulous.”
Later in the day, Charles Pratt, Jr., former head writer of All My Children, was asked to comment on the cancellation of the 2 ABC soaps during a panel for ABC Family’s The Lying Game, on which he serves as writer/executive producer. “You feel for the writers, producers and actors whom you worked with, but when you look at some primetime series that go 13 (episodes) and out, they got 28-30 years. I look back and say, ‘It was a good run’.”

How could Brian Frons say that “the outcry” over the cancellations of both “All My Children” and “One Life To Live” “proves (they ABC) did a good job”? If lack of publicity, meddling in storyline, meddling in casting, moving the weaker of your networks two New York based soaps out to LA, and trying to get rid of veteran performers is doing a good job, then I guess he is right.
You know what all you dirty dogs at ABC- you lost the respect of the soap fans … and Frons you rat bastard bite me.. 40 years good job!? please the best years where the years you weren’t there.. you idiot… you still do not understand how many people and who watches the soaps.. we are lawyers nurses not welfare mothers eating bon bons… and will i give the shows a chance taking my soaps place-hell no… i will do nothing that supports the network that still employs brian frons….. lies and liars rule abc day time…
BRIAN FRONS you did nothing, ALL THE CREDIT GOES TO THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES.Well, I LOVE THE SOAPS FOR ME THEY ARE THE BEST 2. I HAVE WRITTEN COMMENTS ,EMAILS AND WE ALL LOST trying to save our soaps.. but we are going away from ABC daytime in droves and many of us have left ABC altogether except for our soaps. I WILL BE CANCELLING MY ABC SOAP MAGAZINE WHEN THEY TAKE SHOWS OFF. I HOPE EVERY SURSORIBER WILL DO THE SAME. I THINK THE ONES THAT ARE TAKING OFF OUR SOAP. ALL S U – K !!! DIANE FROM FRORAL CITY, FL.
Frons is totally mental! What is he taking about? He actually proud of what he did? They only justice is if he’s fired!!! With so many good people without jobs, why does he still have one?
Brian Frons is still talking out of his butt!! That seems to be the ONLY thing that he is good for. ABC needs to recognize who is screwing up daytime TV and fire him!!!! I only watch AMC and OLTL on ABC—after they are off, I will NOT watch ABC at all. These “replacement” shows are nothing but a big snooze. I hope Frons chokes on them and ABC replaces him!!! Thank you Prospect Park for realizing how wonderful our soaps are and keeping them for us!! I’m still hoping they can find a cable network to pick them up.
It is solely Brian Frons who is responsible for the demise of ABC soaps. I truly hope that a cable network picks up both OLTL and AMC and do what he could not – invest in them, rather than end them. The only thing that needs to end is Frons’s terror reign on ABC daytime.
So to make OLTL & AMC fans even happier Brian Frons thought cancellation would do the trick? I def dont have a smile on my face!
Just to put it into perspective. Last weeks ratings…….
Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)
Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,778,000 (-31,000/-192,000)
2. B&B 2,988,000 (-38,000/-178,000)
3. OLTL 2,812,000 (+33,000/+481,000)
4. AMC 2,580,000 (+10,000/+28,000)
5. GH 2,509,000 (-113,000/-111,000)
6. DAYS 2,450,000 (+109,000/-114,000)
Oh, so I see why you would cancel OLTL, the ratings are awfu…. um…. up 481,000 from a year ago at this time. Stupid ABC……
Mark my word: After AMC and OLTL leave, Mobs ‘R Us (er, General Hospital) will be next gone from ABC and into oblivion (er, Prospect Park) in September 2012. That can’t happen soon enough. It’s been downright stale and unwatchable in recent years and is so far past its expiration date it’s comical. With unsurprisingly plummeting numbers like this above, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet. But ABC obviously wasn’t going to axe all three at once. I’m sure the official death sentence will be confirmed next March or April.
u have know right talking the legendary soaps of the air it is clear that u have know respect for us that watch soaps nnobody cares about stupid cooking shows we have enoughf already u are a verry stupid person pepole are angry this is the stupidest thing i have ever sean the people thet play the chaters will have no jobs and thay have famils u hre showing them know respect at all i will not watch the chew foreget it or abc put them were thay belong on tv
OK the reasoning for dropping soaps is so beyond realistic. The last thing we need is more cooking shows. Who is going to take time out of their already busy day to watch a market of TV that has way to many shows of that type already? I’m a soap watcher for 40 yrs. I’ve worked full time in company for 35 yrs got my degree in Business at 46 and raised 1 daughter almost as a single parent. Trust me when I say keep these sorts of programs if you insist on running them early in the morning or on weekends. I for one cook less now then ever before. I don’t think Daytime tv execs have a clue that the audience of soaps is not just going to move over to these shows. I for one will not! So bottom line you will lose money anyhow.
I dont understand how can you take out the two of the best soaps out All My Children and One Life to Liive I have been a great fan for almost forty years and you have the nerve to do this. Well i hope you happy because i would not be watching the abc channel no more and belive me there will be thousands of fan that will not watch abc channel no more so you will be losing alot of fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
u pepole are crazy for taking off amc and oltl i have been watching them since i was in highschool and still watching them and iam 32 yrs old iam not watching the chew or abc till u can get your heads out of your butts and put them on where thay belong thay are lendgendary we grew up watching them u need to let pepole know what time thay will be on online and is it sept 26 or jan 2012 and the website u will be losing alot of fanslet us know what time thay will be online ond the website and if thay will be back on tv give us info
I just have to say this ***The Chew*** looks stupid in the promo’s and if people want to watch shows about food they would watch food network or the cooking channel. At the very least the idiots at ABC/Disney could have moved the soaps to soapnet!!! Mickey Mouse himself would have made better decisions than Brian Frons did!! I can’t wait for the day that “THE MOUSE” hands “THE RAT” (Brian Frons) his walking papers.
For a middle-aged white man who obviously keeps his finger on the pulse of what the young and hip demo wants, Mr Frons is much too modest. He personally can take credit for driving ABC soap fans away and continually diminishing the ratings since he was hired to take over ABC daytime. Under his reign, every soap did the exact opposite of what was needed to lock in the audience they already had and then add to it. Well done Mr Frons, you are a top-notch soap-killer. But millions of ABC soap fans hung in…in spite of you.
He can also take credit for dismantling NBC’s soap’s.
This hasn’t been his first time at the daytime rodeo.
The Disney exec’s should take a long, hard look at what
happened over at NBC. It was Mr. Frons, who had knocked
over the very first domino there.
Or maybe that’s exactly why Disney hired him to head up ABC Daytime. Clearly he was out of touch with daytime viewers as his tenure at NBC proved so in hiring him, Disney got a fall guy who would be blamed for the state of the shows and their eventual cancellations by fans, but without really harming the other Disney brands.
Brian Frons talks out of both sides of his mouth. His agenda has been to dismantle ABCD from the get go. One Life to Live has gotten zero advertising in primetime over the past few years, zero support, he runs from supporting contemporary storylines such as KISH, and it’s #3 in the soaps ratings right now no thanks to him. He should be joining the lines of the unemployed.
What. A. Tool.
Frons is an imbecile, the outcry proves the the greedy people who run Disney know NOTHING about what the viewers actually want to watch. Mr. Elliot can hope until the cows come home but there is not one soap fan I know that will give the Chew a chance. I like Food shows but this one looks downright dumb and right after the obligated episodes are over it will be cancelled.
Tell Gordon Elliott that we prefer AMC on tv
I don’t think frons has any right to take 40her years of credit for these shows since he and disney haven’t been a part of them for that long. But they both sure have their hands in the destruction of daytime! Since they have taken over ABC has gone down the tubes! Soaps are/were the only good thing they have going! Cooking shows have been done a million times over and I for one have had enough of them. Won’t tune in to abc at all once my shows go online. I don’t care what they put on the air or who. Abc/disney has destroyed any loyality I have had for them. They call their viewers/consumers names and then want us to tune in? No thank you! You will be “off the air” to me and my household. Soaps gave abc money for years of primetime programming and now you use it up and throw it away. Shame on you all at abc/disney.
I WILL ALSO NO LONGER WATCH ABC I AM SO SICK OF ALL THESE REALTY SHOWS THAT IS WHY WE HAVE NO FEELING LEFT IN THIS WORLD TODAY ALL WE HAVE IS PEOPLE ACTING CRAZY, I ALSO THINK I WILL SHUT OFF CABLE TV I PAY ALOT OF MONEY FOR INFORMERCIALS AND RERUNS, SO ABC AND DISNEY AND ALL YOU COMERCIALS I WLL NOT WATCH OR PURCHASE OR GO TO YOUR PARK HAVE FUN WITH YOUR DUMB NEW SHOWS
I find it absolutely astonishing that Brian Frons has the audacity to continue making the most idiotic comments re: ABC’s rationalization for cancelling AMC and OLTL. Ultimately it comes down to ABC being greedy. They were still making money from both shows but just not the money they wanted. I don’t want to appear mean-spirited but I will follow AMC & OLTL online (possibly cable too) but I have no interest in watching The Chew or The Revolution. I honestly believe they will both be colossal failures.
The amount they are making is tiny. If things go on as they have been, ABC would be LOSING money off of both shows by next year. Well, they won’t since they cancelled the shows. I’m a longtime viewer of both soaps, but I’m also a reasonable person who understands that TV is a business, not a charity.
Reasonable business decision or not both shows are still turning a profit, I doubt The Spew will. Brian Frons and ABC have completely alienated their core daytime audience. First by telling us we were out of their demo (in our 40s), Then Brian Frons and his go read a book shout out to fans not to mention Mario Orange Clogs and his callous comment on fans missing their soaps and laughing (PR nightmare, he may be missing a show real soon) Ummmm….and now you want US to support your show. Cold day in hell I will NEVER watch ABCD again. Not a poor sport, their programming has turned into all cheap reality and and crummy daytime shows including the hens leading up to The Spew. Cable and the Internet are the future. May you choke on your chew Frons, ABC, and Batali!
And that cable audience will stay with cable for food and lifestyle shows. I predict ABC will be the first network to completely collapse. People can only take so much reality, food, lifestyle etc. Some of us still like quality, scripted television. That’s what we pay our providers for. If cable, satellite think we are going to pay for a bunch of reality infomercials they are going to be in for a surprise.
Sondra,
Hate to break the news to you, but you don’t have to pay anything to watch ABC. It is a broadcast network so it is free. And if you call soaps “quality” scripted programming, then I truly feel sorry for you.
Todd,
I hate to break it to YOU, but Sondra said “providers” as in cable/satellite.
What’s your definition of “quality” scripted programing? Something that’s on once a week for 24 weeks and is canceled after 5 years because the writers ran out of ideas or a show that’s on 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year for 40+ years?
Bull. To get my “local, broadcast networks,” I have to pay the cable company, because I can’t get them on my satellite company’s channels (I live in an area between the zones, it seems, and I live near Pittsburgh, PA!). If you think it’s free to get PBS, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and CW, please pay my bills for me! Right now, my cable runs over $23 a month just to get 9 channels (this includes CNN and HLN)! If I want to add just the LOCAL local stations (three total) to my satellite programs, it runs me an additional $10 plus I have to get HD, which runs $17 a month with the box and monthly payment…Yeah, “local broadcast networks are ‘free’…” HA!
You can get those channels for free with rabbit ears. You have satellite TV with some restrictions for local access, apparently.
If you don’t like paying the money, then discontinue your satellite service and you can have service for free.
In any case, that wasn’t an apples-to-apples comparison.
Oh, Todd. You’re just like all the other idiots out there who decide to have knee-jerk reactions to soaps. First of all, ANY scripted television is going to be better than yet another food-based talk show. You know how they always show the best stuff from any movie or television show in the previews? Um, previews for The Chew feature such tidbits as “small shrimp are awesome in my gumbo” and “sometimes, you have to be inventive!” Yeah, this is award-winning television. But more importantly, to be so incredibly dismissive of a genre is insanely naive. Soaps have told some of the most ground-breaking stories ever to hit the television screen. While primetime has to make a big deal every time two women kiss — and it’s ALWAYS women, never men — several soaps have explored human sexuality in depth. General Hospital was doing stories about AIDS when Grey’s Anatomy and its ilk weren’t even on anyone’s drawing boards. But you’re right, we should replace this scripted programming with MORE shows in which mindless hosts indulge in pithy, insipid conversations. We should celebrate the death of anything with even a passing resemblance to creativity. Soaps may not be your cup of tea, but they are every bit as much a part of the entertainment spectrum as any other form of programming. In fact, I’d dare say more so. Tell me any other form that has lasted so long? Tell me any other genre that has the kind of devoted fans daytime does? And, pray tell, Todd, what do YOU watch that is so far superior to these shows that have lasted for decades, influenced everything from fashion to public awareness, and have entertained millions upon millions of people? I’d venture a guess that nothing you watch will ever get the 30 million viewers that Luke and Laura’s wedding got in the 1980′s. And I’ll bet no star of anything you watch has the international recognizability factor of Susan Lucci. But go ahead with your snide self, Todd, while a cherished form of entertainment dies. Go ahead and feel sorry for fans of the genre. Moron.
Tell that to Time Warner!
I recall when ABC cancled DARK SHADOWS (for a rival of Password, no less!) they only gave them WEEKS to wrap things up.
Two wrongs (or in this case three), don’t make a right.
I am in my mid twenties and have been watching amc/oltl since i was a kid. My mom watched religiously and i too have been watching religiously since about 1997! If i want to watch a food show it will not be the chew! I would most definately have my tv set to the food network. As far as abc, well when oltl is gone so is your station from my tv sets and that includes espn and disney. My children have since april stopped watching disney jr and are now strictly nickjr kids! Which nick jr is awesome for kids! Nick jr also teaches so much more than disney jr! I will follow my soaps to the online specture and abc will hopefully crumble! Amc/oltl hace proven to be successful. And since the “reality/self help” b.s. Has been going on for a while it surely wont last much longer. Reality tv sucks and so does talk tv. I like getting away and i love my soap drama. Sorry abc after my soaps are gone from your station so is my family and myself!
You don’t know your viewers at all. You will see. The chew? Come on.
There wouldn’t be an outcry if Frons would just kept the shows on the air and not cancel them. No one is going to want to watch his new shows, so if he wants to be in soap fan good graces, he’s got another thing coming.
The job was done just fine UNTIL 2002 when Frons was hired, but he had his own little plans. REALITY SHOWS! If I were Robert Iger, I would definitely have Brian Frons replaced. ABC has lost an enormous amount of viewers because of all this. A good corporation would not stand for that.
No one will watch these new shows. Frons said it – these shows have been watched and passed on for 40 years – The people who are hooked, many work and dvr/tivo the soaps. No one will do that with these new shows and they have just alienated many loyal ABC viewers!
I don’t even watch the soaps and this guy sounds like a total douchebag patting himself on the back for a job well done because fans are in an outcry. It makes no sense what he’s saying.
I think Brian Frons is a two-faced hypocrite. His comments about the older viewers made me physically ill. He should be fired ASAP.
Frons is an awful business man. He tried to “train” daytime viewers into enjoying his misogynistic under tones and one note characters that he demanded be played 5 days a week. In a little less than a month All My Children has become the show that I watched all those years ago. Moving the talented writers, producers, cast and crew AWAY from Brian Frons is what will keep these soaps alive for another 40 years.
Is Brian Frons high? If he nurtured it so well, then it wouldn’t be cancelled, so no he did not do a good job.
He is high on smelling his own piss.. he thinks way to much of himself and no one should support any net work that he works on… what a pig.. it would be nice if who ever hired this man would get fired with him…he sabotaged abc.. one man created the biggest network mess in the history of t.v. and only the consumers see it.. abc disney is asleep at the wheel-while walter Disney spins in his grave..
Frons, Sweeney, and Disney have made a complete mess of ABC. It’s no longer a channel I care to watch, nothing’s going to be on there but reality/cooking/fashion shows. If I wanted to watch that stuff I have cable channels and lots of them! You have no one to thank but yourselves when this network goes belly up! NO THANK YOU I WILL NOT WATCH ABC AFTER AMC, OLTL, AND GH ARE GONE!!
I think Mr. Frons, ABC and “The Powers that Be” are in for a very big surprise at how UNSUCCESSFUL “The Chew” will actually be with the audience. I won’t be watching that’s for sure!
Frons has only managed to master the basic tool of manipulation; twisting reality to complement his and ABC’s agenda. The outrage of fans had absolutely nothing to do with his or ABC’s promotion and investment of the soaps. These are long time fans that hung in there because of their love of these iconic shows. I have no desire to watch any of the replacement shows because they sound beyond boring so the only thing ABC accomplished from my perspective is the end of my viewership of 30 plus years from 1-4 daily. I doubt very seriously either the Chew or Revolution will be around 40 plus years. I understand the bottom dollar but these shows have an enormous following that will never be matched by either of these new shows. I find it odd they didn’t look to sell them vs. leasing if they were so obsolete. Hmmm
Right on!
When are Brian Frons and Anne Sweeney going to get the axe? I was a loyal ABC viewer, but they destroyed my trust. I’ll follow All My Children and One Life to Live where ever they go, and I’ll continue supporting General Hospital. I’ve lost interest in anything else shown on ABC. I’ll never watch the replacement shows on ABC daytime; they are just one step above static. It’s pointless to invest time in watching anything on primetime when ABC doesn’t give primetime shows a chance to succeed before taking them off the air. Forget ABC. I’m just remaining loyal to my shows and Agnes Nixon.
For anyone unaware of the campaign to keep All My Children and One Life to Live on TV, check out: http://sudz.tv/
ABC? Do Promotions of their daytime serials?
What a joke that is…. BTW, i have some lovely ocean front property in the state of Montana I would love to offer to you!
Frons does not know how to tell the truth, he is a liar and is responsible for quality shows being cancelled on ABC over the years. He has damaged the genre, insulted and denigrated the viewers of ABC programming to a point where I will never watch ABC again. He has no respect at all of the viewers. He is caustic, narrow minded and an insult to the consumers of entertainment.
I feel the cooking shows belong on Food or Cooking network and that is where they should remain.
