Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA.
While sitting on the final TCA panel of the day today, the veteran actress Madeleine Stowe – a member of the cast on the new ABC drama Revenge that will air Wednesday nights at 10 this fall — believes that recession-ravaged Americans will welcome a series set among the chi-chi set in the Hamptons that finds the “haves” being treated to the bitter taste of revenge. The series, which premieres Sept. 21, stars Emily VanCamp as a young woman exacting revenge on a wealthy Hamptons clan that destroyed her father. “We’re dealing with a particular time in American history where I think the average citizen is going to want to see the takedown of the rich,” Stowe said from the stage. Afterward, she elaborated further, telling Deadline, “We all know that we’re heading toward very interesting times. I don’t know where our country is going to be. But I think the idea of being able to observe these overprivileged people who have everything at their fingertips and at their beck and call given a comeuppance might be sort of a vicarious thrill for the audience.” Stowe stressed that disparity between the moneyed class and everyone else “is so huge right now in terms of who’s making the money. And I think everyone’s feeling their lives starting to slip. So to be able to turn on the tube for one hour and see this sort of escapist fantasy that has a really dark heart I think could be satisfying…There’s almost an Upstairs Downstairs quality to what we’re doing on this show.”

REVENGE is the best pilot ABC has.
Wrong. The best pilot has is The River.
The River was very good, but I spent the entire 43ish minutes wondering how they were going to turn it into a full series. It would make an excellent movie or mini-series, but I don’t see how the mystery could last beyond the first 4-5 episodes. Of course, I’m sure several people said the same about Lost…
I’d get a vicarious thrill to see overprivileged actors get their comeuppance rather than their complaints about other people being overpaid.
Or the smug, self-righteous and leftist. I’d pay to see that.
Or racist, obstructionist, asshole conservatives. Nothing bad EVER happens to them.
Fanning the fames of class warfare, real classy.
Overprivileged people who have everything at their fingertips… people like Madeleine Stowe?
Madeline Stowe: Another Hollywood whack job spouting “feelings” rather than facts. Never let it be said that the “middle class” is shrinking due to government policies. That runs counter to the liberal “culture”. Meanwhile, lets stay busy producing garbage like this to further the cause of left-wing propaganda. Gee. It’s like it’s 1933 all over again. Yeah, let’s “take down” the rich since the government is doing such a great job providing employment for all.
Except that the government policies you claim have shrunk the middle class have been enacted because the rich have bought Congress & the Supreme Court.
Exactly.
The rich in this country have the ballsack to actually insist on further tax-cuts, with Republicans promising “They’ll create jobs with that extra money.”
Bullshit. I was born at night, but not last night.
The problem in this country is greed. It’s not enough to have a 200-ft yacht, that motherfucker can be a 400-footer if we put our minds to it and lower taxes, gut medicare, fire half the payroll and get 300 Chinamen to pick up the slack at $1/hr.
Greed, man. It is the plastic explosives on the foundation of this country. And one of these days, the poor are going to light it.
You’re right, serious. What we really need to do is to start taxing our way back to economic prosperity again. This has worked many, MANY times in the past and would undoubtedly work for us now.
What’s that you say–? It’s NEVER worked befpre–? Not even once–? Not ever–?
My bad. Sorry.
You’re missing the point, Classic. He isn’t implying that just taxing the rich is going to fix everything, but rather taxing them at their fair share. There is no reason that the GOP should constantly fight for more tax breaks for the rich, er…sorry, “job creators” at a time where our middle is rapidly shrinking and our society is becoming more of an oligarchy than a democracy.
This (and any prosperous) nation thrives on success of the middle class. You take that away and we become not much different than those 3rd world countries you hear about on the Discovery Channel.
Seriously? Chinamen? What year are you living in, you class-warfare, idiot racist.
And, “Classic Liberal”, you let that go by? I guess you support anyone who will try to bring down Republicans, even if they’re idiot racists.
I thought the biggest whack job from Hollywood was that guy from “Bedtime for Bonzo”. He was the guy who spent all that money on Defense – THAT kind of Gov’t spending created a lot of jobs.
I still prefer Ike, he wanted to build Hospitals, not bombers – check him out on YouTube.
Spending money on defense did employed a lot of people (military and civilian) in the 80s…Not to mention it helped us break the backs of the Soviet Union, whose communist system couldn’t compete.
I didn’t know Ike was from Hollywood???
Produced and starring a bunch of rich people. Hypocrisy alert! LMAO!
“…But I think the idea of being able to observe these overprivileged people who have everything at their fingertips and at their beck and call…”
sounds like Hollywood actors/actresses, directors, producers, studio bosses etc.
Boy this show looks like a TV movie not a series.
Brilliant script. Baffling pilot. Just a mess. I knew what was happening because I’d read it, but I still had no idea what was happening as I watched. How anyone in America could follow the plot, as it stands, is quite beyond me.
Maybe they will explain it in the episodes that follow. It’s called a mystery for a reason.
Wasn’t talking about the mystery. Things can still make sense without answering questions. The execution of, again, a gem of a script was subpar.
I had no problem making sense of the pilot. I’m not “average joe” American though, but that isn’t exactly their audience I don’t think.
TERRIERS RIP. That’s the type of show I’d love to watch underdogs taking on rich people and the status quo.
Ypung lady you are completely correct, to hell with the bastards
Paul
After World War II, the United States had unprecented growth and prosperity for MOST of the population. There were poor, there was injustice for minorities but there was not a preference nor adulation for wealthy “job creators”. Everyone but the youngest were personally aware of the Depression. They recalled the market crash on Wall Street, not Main Street and NOT Pennsylvania Avenue. Banks refused to payout savings to customers so the Government introduced new, stronger banking laws and backed customer deposits with the FDIC and other Government backed agencies. The idea that the wealthy were “job creators” was not a popular myth. The Government was the employer when programs like the TVA brought electricity to the rural South and the CCC and WPA put food on the table for many families. This kind of collective recovery was well on the way to improving life in the USA BEFORE the Second World War. That is why FDR was elected FOUR times (and why the Repulicans changed the Law to limit Presidential terms to just 2).
Momentum was on our side and Two term Truman continued the New Deal policies despite a now Republican Congressional majority resisting.
Now we have a steady diet of “market cycles” (it’s easy to profit if you are “in on” the market cycles – less time spent waiting for the payoff) but since the Media is now contolled by corporate interests and Reagan eliminated the Fairness Doctrine, we are constantly told we feel good about it. After all, Paris Hilton is hot and she even kisses farm boys on television. She’s more likeable than a Koch brother.
The Coporate controlled TV and other media constantly inform us about sports, celebrities or some other distraction, you don’t hear them reminding us about another predatory lending bank getting a bailout.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to say that DURING the war and SINCE, the Government purchased a LOT of weapons – sounds to me like that creates a lot of jobs.
And PLEASE do the following equation: A B1 Bomber cost $1 Billion new for JUST one. The current maximum payout for Social Security is $23,000 per YEAR. Now if you divide $1,000,000,000 by $23,000 do YOU get 43,478 retired people able to live for one year for just one Plane? Because I do. Pick your favorite weapon, then divide…
One final: After WWII the tax rate for the Wealthiest Americans was 70%. It was also the time of unprecedented growth. Keep THAT in mind next time the Republicans get better media coverage and the chant is about wealthy “job creators”. Our new laws do more for job creation overseas than they do here in the USA (hint: It’s more profitable).
Wasn’t Madeline Stowe, in the movie Revenge, with Kevin Costner and Anthony Quinn?
Corporate tax rate in the USA – 35%.
Corporate tax rate in Ireland – 12 1/2%. You do the math. If you ran a business you would all do the same thing and grow profits overseas and keep them there nice and tucked away.
Debt as % of GDP when Obama took office – 60%.
Debt as a % of GDP now —————-!00%.
The Fed has a zero interest rate policy at the moment while it continues to print and pump money into the economy. Guess what happens when interest rates rise just 50 basis points? It’ll be like a subprime ARM doubling the payment on a worldwide scale and it’ll make the depression look like a picnic.
Hey, how’s that class warfare diatribe working out for you, Madeline Stowe?
What a moron.
If we had still had tariffs like other successful countries have protectionist tariffs, jobs would not just flow overseas.
Flat Earth economics is good only for shareholders with tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of shares, that’s not 401K land, that’s the CEO, the Board and other insiders. Lower taxes for businesses just puts the burden on the working class. How is it that people LOVE to live in a functioning society but HATE to pay taxes to make that happen?
If we were a 3rd world country, and we’re getting there, the rich know they could get us to do anything for food – it works overseas, they’ll make it work here – and we speak English.
Germany has a very successful economy and universal health care. They also have always focused on a well educated society *except Hitler. Is it because Germany does not defend itself but we defend it? OR is it because we keep inventing threats and making weapons for it. Star Wars SDI is a joke, they put homing devices in the missles so the anti-missles can find them. Do the math thing for me, a new fighter costs ~ $223 Million/Plane, How many retirees will that pay for? See my other post.
And stop with the “Class warfare” catch phrase – whatever happened to Shared Sacrifice?
You say Class Warfare, I say Shared Sacrifice. I get a kick out of people who want to live in a functioning society but don’t want to pay taxes. That word has become taboo but it’s just to used to give yet another tax break to the businesses/wealthy while jobs flow overseas.
The tax burden has shifted away from people who can easily afford to pay their share to people who just want to put food on the table and enjoy their families – the latest complaint from conservative mouthpieces is flatscreen TV’s – while I agree spending is stupid it was G.W. Bush who told Americans to go shopping. A flatscreen TV may be a luxury but it’s another distraction from the real issues.
If the USA still had protectionist tariffs (the UK (Ireland) has them, China has them, Germany has them) then our corporate Tax rate might be the same as Irelands but since Ireland has fewer multi-national companies than the USA, I am SURE you will count tariffs as a tax on US companies – even though you are not counting them in the UK. So while G.E. was very profitable in 2009, paid no US taxes, got a tax REBATE (thank you American worker for sending some of your taxes to G.E.) they also got to qualify to borrow from the US Gov’t at 0%.
The Conservative Flat Earth policy is working for wealthy multi-nationals but it is killing small businesses and we are not on equal footing with the rest of the world.
Oh, and your borrowing logic is wrong, it’s the Reserve Currency you should worry about.
Finally this; If this country fails to learn from Germany, or other strong, well educated economies, we will become a 3rd world nation (we’re on our way). That will mean that, like the poor slobs who make our shirts now, Americans will soon be paid $0.06 to make a shirt, and we will be happy to have a job – that’s OK with the wealthy, at least we speak English.
Puh-lease. ‘Average’ Americans would rather see the social programs and services they rely on get cut to the bone rather than ask the rich to pony up a measily 4% more in taxes. This is because people are mostly stupid and spend too much time fantasizing about being rich to realize they probably never will be, and are ignoring their own self interests in the present.
So you say average Americans should aspire to live on government entitlement programs (i.e. off the taxes of others) rather than aspire to be rich? Spoken like a true Class Warrior.
Makes sense
I’m looking forward to this show since I loved EVC in Everwood but the timeslot makes me nervous. ABC hasn’t had a successful show in that slot in god knows how long. I can’t even remember the last one. Hopefully Revenge will be able to retain most of Modern Family’s audience that first week because Happy Endings (a show I like) isn’t going to be much help in subsequent weeks.
This remake of the Count of Monte Cristo sounds absolutely boring. But then, all dramas on major network television are boring and unwatchable. You need to go to cable for great TV drama, and for great TV comedy as well, frankly.
The right-wing wackjobs complaining about this show can go bite it, btw.
Federal income taxes were higher during the ’90s than they are today, and the economy was much stronger. Also, taxes were really, really high during the 1950s and ’60s, when America was at the peak of its economic strength.
Al, could you do us all a favor…shut the fuck up and swallow your meds already? Geesh.
Another gun fan who does not bother to check the facts? And such manners from a “Bond” girl (are you sure about that?) Your kind always exhibits such bravery when you can hide (and where any troll can be a “Bond” girl) but I’ll bet you never had a weapon pointed AT you, why bother to be brave and to sacrifice when others will do it for you? You remind me of the wealthy. No WMD’s in Iraq but they DID find Oil there…
My God, you are such easy fodder for the status quo. You should get off your steady diet of corporate television and try watching News from sources that take NO corporate money (not FOX, not NBC, NONE of the networks and not even NPR nor PBS, they all take corporate money). I’m talking about the BBC, FreeSpeechTV, or LinkTV. You would be SURPRISED at what you are not being told.
Hey, here is a project for you “Bond” girl (don’t worry, it’s easy), why not rent “Why We Fight”, the 2005 Documentary – or just for you, it’s FREE on YouTube (with the money you save, you could even buy a MIRROR).
You guys remember the one-and-done season of PROFIT on FOX? Suave, debonair guy appears out of nowhere to outmaneuver and otherwise take down corporate enemies one by one — only to reveal at the end that he sleeps in a cardboard box at night?
Pilot-wise, ranks up there with Charlie on LOST saying “Guys, where ARE we?”
I think it’s crazy how this show is the most promoted of the fall season, ive seen ads for it on like 5 different networks.
