More laughs than screams? At today’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation panel at TCA, producers and actors from the long-running procedural drama said viewers should expect a lighter tone than in recent seasons with the introduction of Ted Danson’s new character, D.B. Russell.
Executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said the 12th season of CSI will still tend to open with “one or more dead or maimed bodies,” but that more humor will be injected into the procedure. “I think you can infer it — last year we were chasing a serial killer; that arc has come to an end … we will have more humor than last season.” After the session she reiterated that blood will still spill: “It will be our usual gore that we’ve all been desensitized to. … I don’t think we are going to lose our template.”
Said Mendelsohn of the decision to hire Danson: “We wanted a Sherlock Holmes — we did not want a science nerd. And we started the premiere of Season 1 with, ‘Here comes the nerd squad.’ We said, how do we get someone of great intelligence who is not a nerd?” That led, she said, to making Danson’s character the son of intellectual, Left Coast hippie parents.
Comedy veteran Danson, who is replacing the ever-dour Laurence Fishburne (who replaced William Petersen), said that recent roles including his turn on Damages are good preparation for taking on a drama, but he also said his years as Cheers bartender Sam Malone didn’t hurt, either. “Trying to hold together a crazy group of people, whether they are crazy-bright or crazy-silly, is something that I respond to,” he said.
Unlike the other characters with their lonely, troubled personal lives, Danson’s character will be a family man with kids and a supportive wife. Joked executive producer Don McGill: “We joke that if you have sex on our show, you die. [Danson’s character] has had sex four times.”
Co-star Marg Helgenberger, who said she was leaving at the end of last season but has decided to stay for one more season only, said that the appearance of a new supervisor on the team will cause her character some stress, but though there will be a little resentment, the Danson character will be “too endearing” for too much strife. She said she is definitely leaving at the end of season, prompting Danson to chime in, “Well, that’s what she says…”
As he enters a new dramatic role, Danson seemed a little embarrassed by questions about whether he felt that he was adequately compensated financially for his many years on Cheers. “I think I was overly fairly compensated. … I go around saving oceans because of guilt for Cheers compensation,” he said. “I was so compensated that we should change the subject.”

There is a humorous side to “murder and gore”?
Gee, that will be quite a surprise to police, EMS, other emergency workers, fire fighters, ER docs, nurses and staff and photojournalists who have seen this up-close for many years and don’t see anything funny about it.
Yes, there IS black humour among these ranks, but not to make fun, only to keep your sanity in the face of such horror.
Okay, what is supposed to be funny about a man with a knife sticking out of his back? – Well I guess *takes off sunglasses* the killer was a backstabber. YEAHHH!
Don’t make the original CSI [any more] comedic. Leave that to “CSI: Miami”. Murder is a serious thing, it’s no joke! Which is why NCIS/NCIS: LA pull better numbers, they leave the jokes for lighter moments in episodes.
I think I’ve seen the humorous show about Murder. It’s called “PSYCH”.. it’s on USA.
Nurse Jackie may sue.
DEXTER may sue.
Super smart idea. Grissom used to add some humor and then Langston made it all dark and dreary. A new boss with fresh energy is perfect for CSI. You think real CSIs and investigators don’t have a humorous side? You think medical examiner’s don’t joke around at work? You have to if you want to stay sane after seeing all the hell that they see.
Go CSI!! Ted adds new life and the show will win its new night!
Maybe they’ll try dark humor like dexter it could work but you know the saying if it ain’t broken don’t fix it
what about the Cheers feature film? will it be a reboot / prequel or a sequel with original cast?
I don’t think they are talking about making jokes and humor about the victims. More on the lines of the way it was when Grissom was there…the show had some lighter episodes at times. Such as the “Fur and Loathing in Las Vegas episode. Also, Grissom and Katherine played off each other so well. Just the quiet, “one-liner” type of comments. Hopefully, Danson will be able to bring back some of that light banter.
Ted Danson in CSI is an even worse casting choice than Fishburne was. Why not just promote sexy Catherine to primary and bring some new SECONDARY people instead? Or even better, cancel it. It hasn’t been the same without Warrick and Grissom anyway.
Nor has it been the same since they let Liz Vassey go the way the did. I kept track and they dropped from 7 to 15, Hodges and Wendy added some needed freshness to the show. Cut the “creativity”t has done nothing to help, and brong back Shankar, Rambo and Vassey.
The rebirth of Ted Danson! Who’s next? Tony Effen Danza!
Danson is already awesome on Bored to Death on HBO. It’s not like he needed this show to resurrect his career.
Damages too. But he will be an awful addition to this.
Q. How many seasons will CSI run?
A. One too many.
Growing up, my dad was Chief Deputy Coroner and then Sheriff, Coroner Marshall of Imperial Valley. For me, I thought everybody grew up talking at the dinner table about coroner’s cases. Doesn’t everyones daddy carry blankets to use for covering the windshield if a certain case was too gruesome for their kids to see? We could be on our way to get ice cream and dad would get a call… off we would go…. Having this kind of life I saw first hand the different sense of humors associated with this type of work. They were all the funniest people!! My dad was such a people person. He loved making people laugh, he also made light of many cases. One has to in order to handle this type of work. Otherwise one would go crazy. I am glad to hear that this season will be lighter. Last season was so dark! I think it is an excellent call and I look forward to seeing Ted Danson with my favorite CSI team.
I am a big Danson fan; just saw him in ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and forgot how good he was. I’ve been watching the reruns of CSI this season and realized that for a show many have given up on, the shows were all very tight; well written; and, perfectrly acted. And, I liked Fishburne too … think Danson will reign supreme. Last night was the Vampire show and Fisburne with fangs is a sight I will not soon forget … and, he was funny too! Shame!
“Mash” was a success for 11 seasons. It took the horrors of the Korean War and the constant flow of wounded to it’s “Mobile Army Surgical Hospital” where the medical staff used dark humor to cope. The antics of the numerous characters kept us laughing each season. I think Ted Danson will make a welcome addition to “CSI”. He’s a veteran actor that has shown us that he can excel in drama as well as comedy.
