Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
After today’s TCA panel on Fox’s new multi-camera comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter, about two high school nerd-girls who grew up to be the mothers of the kind of popular “mean girls” that they envied and hated in high school, the show’s executive producers, Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer, talked with me about how their multi-camera comedy might fit in at Fox, which has struggled to successfully launch a multi-camera sitcom. The show stars Katie Finneran and My Name Is Earl castmember Jaime Pressly as the moms and Australian Aisha Dee and Kristi Lauren as the snotty teenagers. “I think audiences really appreciate multi-camera comedy — you watch the big success of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory and you feel good when you watch it — there’s something very comforting about it, I can’t explain why,” said Kreamer. It [harkens back to] The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy — the history. It’s a little bit slower-paced than some of the single-camera comedies, with the jump cuts and stuff. Sherry and I come from Friends, and we love that.”
Bilsing-Graham added that she thinks a multi-camera comedy fits well with Fox’s programming, more known for reality and animation than situation comedy of any kind. “I think reality television actually helps multi-camera; it has the same energy,“ she said.
Speaking of interaction with an audience, both producers are big fans of the audience reaction on Deadline. “I love the comments … they’re brutal!” Kreamer enthused.

Ellen and Sherry are true gems. A breath of fresh air in a sea of douchebags. All the best of luck with IHMTD. It was easily one of the best pilots!
I love fresh air when it comes to people I hang out with, but give me a douchebag who can create a funny multicam like Big Bang or 2 1/2 men when it comes to comedy writers. the promos for this show don’t speak to that level of talent. of course they did write for Friends, so given the show creating track record of the writers from that show… wait a minute.
What an ugly name for a televison show. Do you think Hollywood hates women?
I just watched this pilot and was stunned by how ugly, hateful and unfunny it is.
Women hating women hating women. Sorry all it does is reveal what a state TV is in. I’d rather watch the women of Boardwalk Empire getting cut up for being whores and douching themselves with lysol because they liked sex. That show LOVES women compared to this one.
Stop the spin…The script was embarassing…simply embarassing and it was Jamie who got the greenlight to go to pilot/series. and unfortunately, she’ll go down with this show which is so beneath her talent. Bad judgement on this choice jamie.
Believe all you want, but boy was this pilot a steaming pile of cacadoody
The idea that multi cam shows need to be with other multi cam shows or single cam shows need to be together is stupid.
Funny shows need to go with funny shows.
you’re right and you’re wrong.
yes, the shows need to be funny/entertaining first and foremost.
BUT… the rhythm of shows need to match. multi-cams have a very specific rhythm that rarely if ever matches the rhythm of a single cam. plus, pretty much all multi cams have the same rhythm (boom boom boom, joke), whereas single cams can vary in rhythm from show to show. (for instance, the rhythm of Modern Family is very different than the rhythm of 30 Rock, and the two shows likely wouldn’t work well together if they were on the same network).
think back a 8 years to when The Office first premiered, the show nearly got cancelled, and part of that was because it didn’t really fit behind any of NBC’s then still-popular multi-cams
One of the worst pilots I have ever seen. Embarrassingly bad. I was shocked that it was picked up. I give it 2 weeks before cancelation.
aisha dee is hot. that is all.
The gtwo most succesful live-action comedies in Fox’s hostory were multi-cam: Married with Children and That 70s Show.
Don’t know the writers. They may be terrific people but I saw their pilot and boy are they drinking their Kool-Aid, it’s a turd. It’s on par with WORK IT. So bad, you ask yourself what else is going on here. Much has to be political. Who the producers are. What agency is pushing it. Watch it for yourself. It’s not subjective. It’s embarrassing.
The FRIENDS alumni are really putting out some good product. This beast and WORK IT. Two of the worst pilots I have seen in years.
Yikes is right. No one from that camp went on to create a hit show. They were riding the wave of having a terrific cast and talented showrunners. I couldn’t even make it to the first act break.
Comments above are harsh but true so Kreamer enjoy your moment in the sun. What’s amazing is these pilots are all tested and this one faired better than the other crap. And the title: “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” yeah, that’ll stand the test of time.
