Community star and host of E!’s The Soup Joel McHale returned to his standup roots this morning when he was summoned to open NBC’s executive session and dropped a few zingers.
He called to American Idol host Ryan Seacrest as “the most powerful hobbit in all of Middle Earth.” He referred to the E! Entertainment that employs him to the “Ehh… Network”.
“My favorite part of TCA is gambling which network is going to try to do something with Christian Slater pool,” McHale said, referring to Slater’s recent string of three back-to-back series — NBC’s My Own Worst Enemy, ABC’s The Forgotten and Fox’s Breaking In — adding that his money is on the CW. He called NBC’s new drama The Playboy Club “Mad Men with boobs.”
McHale didn’t spare barbs about his NBC show, Community, or as he called it, the “Chevy Chase babysitting service”. “Once again we tied The Jersey Shore in Emmy nominations,” he said, referring to Community‘s latest Emmy shutout.
McHale also took shots at TCA’s press tour, calling it “just like Comic-Con but with more nerds” and “like summer camp for shut-outs.”

his humor is unapologetic i love him
Jay closed out the NBC upfronts the year that Conan was going to replace him, and he completely bombed out. Read something.
Not funny at all. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. NBC is a proud network on the upswing. I wish they would’ve asked Jay Leno to do this instead of Joel McHale. Jay is ten times wittier than McHale and Jay has a way of peaking when it really counts. The only reason not to ask Jay? Ageism rears its ugly head in Hollywood yet again.
Or they wanted someone talented.
Nothing will make me laugh harder today than the phrase “Jay has a way of peaking when it really counts.”
PR firms are posting blog comments now? Go figure. Oh, and I just threw up a little bit. Thanks a million.
Wait a minute… people find Jay witty? I like Joel, he makes me laugh.
Oh, there are plenty of other reasons not to ask Jay…
You don’t like his hair?
Jay closed out the NBC upfronts the year Conan was taking over, and failed miserably with a set that made many in the room feeling very uncomfortable. Don’t comment on a business you don’t understand. Read something.
It really made me laugh how you accidentally posted this comment in response to the wrong person, and you even reused some of your favorite lines, like “Read something.”
“Read something.” You thought that was really clever, didn’t you? That’s why you posted once, and then when you didn’t see your comment appear (because you didn’t realize you were responding to the wrong person), you couldn’t wait to type your comment again, and when you did, you got to type “Read something” all over again to show your intellectual dominance in an anonymous internet forum.
Also, anyone who reads such literary masterpieces as “The War for Late Night” really doesn’t have any business criticizing anyone else’s reading habits. Read something.
@ J. Doe..how fitting of a commenting name….Jay Leno hasn’t been funny since the 70s…
wow joe d. you are either 75 years old and suffering from dementia or you are jay leno. and the reasons for why nbc is on the “upswing”(its not) is because of quality shows like “Community”
Both his shows, The Soup and Community, are hilarious! His Seacrest jokes are amazing. All in good fun!
Love the Slater joke, but Breaking In was actually a great show. That was Fox’s stupid fault for not bringing it back for some reason, not his fault.
Poor Leno, he’s reduced to having his press agent post in the comments section of deadline to get any press.
I love the Chevy Chase babysitting service! It’s awesome!
Leno? Is that you? Get back to writing that tripe you call an opening monologue.
Are some of those quotes a bit wrong? Because presumably Joel said “summer camp for shut-ins” not “shut-outs.” Also the Christian Slater joke doesn’t quite scan; somehow I trust Joel’s ability to speak coherent English more than your frazzled TCA reporter’s ability to transcribe (it’s ok, it’s been a long- what, week? 10 days? These things have been going on forever).
BREAKING NEWS: Joel Mchale is just as lame as Jay whatsisface
I like Joel McHale but these jokes were lame…
Calling Community the Chevy Chase Babysitting service is not funny but more importantly gives Chevy Chase way too much credit, he is the least funny in the show.
Then who would you rather have as the baby sitting candidate?
You know, all this constant bickering about Chevy Chase is starting to get on my nerves. He’s a great comedian and a very good actor and Community would not be the same without him – just like it wouldn’t be same with a single one out of this great cast missing.
You must be 100 years old uf you think jay Leno is wittier than Joel McHale. My 71 year old mother knows Joel is 100x funnier and watches him on the soup every week.
The joke about chevy chase is not about him being the funniest on the show. It is actually a dig at chase.
