MSNBC Announces Multi-Year Contract With Rachel Maddow
MSNBC president Phil Griffin, appearing on the cable news network’s Tuesday panel at TCA alongside hosts Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell and Chris Matthews, said the door is still open to “Young Turk” Cenk Uygur, who abruptly left the network July 20. Griffin said he was surprised by the departure, although he does not feel that the host worked in the 6 PM time slot. “We wanted Cenk to stay at MSNBC; he fits our sensibility,” he said. “I don’t think all good people are going to succeed at 6 o’clock. We were working on a new contract to have him on the weekends; I was disappointed that he didn’t stay and hope we will work out that he comes back. … I have nothing bad to say about him. He was terrific.” Griffin said no decision has been made about putting Al Sharpton in Uygur’s former slot but that the civil rights leader “fits into MSNBC.”
During the lively proceedings, all of the panelists denied that MSNBC is attempting to be the mirror opposite of its top competitor, Fox News Channel, which has huge following among conservatives. They also took issue with the idea that the competition between the two has led to rising political polarization in the U.S. “We really don’t live up to the caricature,” Maddow said, adding that she believes that possible presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will get fair coverage on MSNBC. “They really are pushing a party line,” she said. “I think we’re more unpredictable.” Said Matthews: “I root for different people in politics. I’m allowed to.” He called Michele Bachmann “authentic,” termed Romney a “mood ring” and called Jeb Bush “a real political talent down the road.” He added that he tries to feature Republicans “every night of the show.”
And the panelists were willing to go out on a limb and answer the question of who might win the next presidential election. O’Donnell: “Barack Obama will be president of the United States.” Maddow: “I guess Obama, but that has mostly to do with the strength of the field right now.” The always-outspoken Matthews said: “I don’t know… if you look at the economy, you have the answer.” He added that, whatever the outcome, Obama would have a field day campaigning against either Romney or Bachmann, who would “just be a hoot. He’s a very, very lucky pol.”

A panel of imbeciles who can’t see the forest for the trees. They are clueless about what is really going on across America. I can’t wait to watch this sorrowful bunch as the giant US map becomes awash in red. November 2012 is gonna be a blood bath and they know it. The Republicans will take the senate and will solidify their majority in the house. Obama is heading towards an historic and humiliating defeat. To quote my favorite radio talk show host, “Don’t doubt me.”
Let us not forget that 8 years of the Bush-GOP leadership brought this country to the edge of a Great Depression that required them to abandon their free market ethos and bail out Wall Street with a blank check.
Obama saved the country from the Bush Recession. Obama saved General Motors. Obama passed major Health Care reform. Obama ended discrimination against gays in the military. Obama got Osama. Not bad for 3 years work.
Meanwhile the GOP Tea Party has not produced one job creation bill since taking over the House.
@ PistolPete
You’re really a dope or talking out of your ass, this is the garbage Bill Maher sez to stay on the A-List. Obama is the biggest failure we’ve ever had as a President, and Biden is a loonatic with hair plugs and bleached teeth.
@ Alex:
Really?! The “biggest failure” we’ve had? You’ve gone through the history of ALL 44 US Presidents and decided that Obama is it? Funny how you didn’t use any facts to back up your claim but solely resorted to name-calling. Wait a minute….do you work for Fox News??
Good grief! Blame Bush… will it ever cease? Barack Obama has made things much worse. His policies have failed and he has squandered trillions in the process. Nearly three years into the Obama Administration and 4 years of democratic control of both houses of congress (until Republicans won a sweeping victory last November) and idiots like you are still blaming George W. Bush. Truth is, Ronald Reagan arguably took over a similarly anemic economy from Carter but his policies brought about very different results.
During Ronald Reagan’s first term, unemployment fell sharply as growth expanded dramatically. A little over two years after the end of the ’81–’82 recession, unemployment fell to 7.5% from 10.8%. At the same point after the present recession, unemployment has fallen just 1.4%. During the seven quarters following the ’81–’82 recession, GDP growth averaged 7.1%. During the current post-recession span it has averaged only 2.8 percent. Furthermore, the GDP grew by a pathetic 0.4 % in the first quarter and a measly 1.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011.
Face it, Barack Obama and his democrat conspirators are terrorists. They’ve virtually taken a wrecking ball to the nation’s economy. Barack Obama has made things much worse. He has absolutely no record of success with which to run and the blame game simply won’t work any longer. The American people voted for Barack Obama to prove they aren’t racists but they will vote Republican to prove they aren’t idiots.
@ AaronSch
I don’t think people were trying to prove they aren’t racists. That’s a senseless statement. The GOP didn’t have a candidate who inspired any confidence in reasonably thoughtful people. Guess what? The GOP STILL doesn’t have a candidate, at this date, who inspires any confidence in reasonably thoughtful people.
I don’t believe the GOP want Bachmann to get the nomination. Romney is too much of a shape shifter. Pawlenty? Cain? Gingrich? DOA. Huntsman worked for Obama, nuff said. Palin? A TMZ more than a politician.
Unless there is a candidate who comes out of nowhere Obama probably won’t lose if he puts together a halfway decent campaign. And he knows how to campaign very well. Already raised over 80 million dollars for 2012 in big and small donations. 47 goes to his own campaign. And we have another six months before 2011 is done.
Obama losing is far from the lay up you seem to believe it is given the current climate. And Boehner and Cantor did the GOP no favors at all in this debt ceiling crisis. The congressional poll numbers were worse than the President’s.
So the country is going to vote GOP? Okay…
You are delusional. He has absolutely no record of achievement and the prospects for improvement in the economy heading into next year’s election are abysmal. The Republicans could win with just about anyone at this point.
Don’t forget, the country “went GOP” in the last election. The Republicans won an historic victory over the Democrats and recaptured the House. Now it’s on the the Senate and White House.
I don’t know what type of drug AaronSch indulges in, but perhaps he/she would wait till it wears off before posting. Fantasyland is an interesting place to be, but the danger comes when it is confused with reality.
I live in Realityville my friend. You must have a short memory, the Dems took an historic drubbing last November when the Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives. We’re not done yet.
It is you and your fellow travelers who have reached the end of your collective rope. Open your eyes and look at what socialism has wrought in Europe. The whole continent is swimming in debt it cannot service. If we don’t make significant cuts to the nanny state here at home, we too will be doomed. The pendulum will swing conservative in 2012. You can tell me how right I was in a year. Better yet, I’ll be happy to remind you. Ciao.
Its clear, you can rant and rave, get your facts wrong as demonstrated by AaronSch. The moderator states don’t get your facts wrong; but, clearly he does not care. As long has he has people like Aaron who are of his persuasion; people like these will be allowed to post. Aaron just watches too much FOX PROGANDA STATION. NOT NEWS, JUST LOOK UP ROGER AILES.
Gee, MSBS thinks Odummy will be reelected? Whoda predicted that?
You know, I bet that’s why their corporate breath smells like Ofailure’s ass.
He called Michele Bachmann “authentic.”
Since when did “authentic” become a synonym for “crazy?”
I suspect MSNBC wants to keep Cenk Uygur from going to Current TV more than they want to keep him on MSNBC — not so much because he would carry any audience with him as that he is young, loud, and appeals to the same demos as Rachel Maddow. They don’t want to see him go to Current TV at 9-10 and compete with her.
Very astute, Bazinga. Who would have thought 6 months ago MSNBC would now find themselves competing with Current TV?
MSNBC WHAT A BIG JOKE, ALL LEFTY TWITS
And please tell me who watches MSNBC anymore? Last I heard, their ratings are tanking bigtime throughout most of their schedule, even worse than CNN’s are. Simple deductive reasoning…FNC for the conservatives and CNN and MSNBC for the liberals.
The thing I love about Rachel Maddow is the way she smirks without even realizing it, even if it’s talking about people dying.
Not that I’m a huge fan of Cenk or his politics, but firing him while he was on vacation is a pretty shitty thing do to do someone. Now they want him back? If the guy had any pride or integrity, he’d give them the finger and keep on walking.
I haven’t watched MSNBC since Cenk announced his leave from the 6PM spot. I have no plans to go back if he is not there.
It was a hassle to watch it but Cenk made it worthwhile. Now I watch him on The Young Turks. I camnot be happier.
Do you think, when the President looses in 2012, he will be like Grover Cleveland and come back and run in 2016. Or he could be like FDR, who was on the national ticket for vice president in 1920, lost, and came back 12 years later and ran for president and won!
Cenk Uygur was a breath of fresh air on a network that
could get pretty damned boring sometimes, recycling the same, so called, current event stories day in and day out.
I’ve been watching MSNBC for years now and, for the most part, I love your programming, but I think you are unduly concerned about being (fair and balanced) if you know what I mean!
Frankly, I’m still pissed about the firings’ of Phil Donahue and Keith Olbermann.
